    Welcome to World Bank HIV/AIDS
Last Updated: July 20,2005 While HIV/AIDS is clearly a health problem, the world has come to realize it is also a development problem that threatens human welfare, socio-economic advances, productivity, social cohesion, and even national security. HIV/AIDS reaches into every corner of society, affecting parents, children and youth, teachers and health workers, rich and poor. The World Bankin partnership with others is working to roll back the spread of this global epidemic. As the largest long-term investor in prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS in developing countries, the World Bank Group is working with its partners to:
    • Prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS among vulnerable groups and in the general population; Promote countries' health policies and multi-sectoral approaches (e.g. by working in education, social safety nets, transport and other vital areas); Expand basic care and treatment activities for those affected by HIV/AIDS and their families, as well as for children whose parents have died of AIDS and other vulnerable children.

    55. SF AIDS Fdn: Unique Challenges For Transgender Community
This article from the May 97 OUTReach, the San Francisco aids Foundation's bimonthly newsletter, describes the unique challenges facing the transgender community regarding hiv/aids.
    http://www.sfaf.org/aboutsfaf/outreach/may97/transgender.html
    Unique challenges for transgender community
Self-esteem, employment and HIV can be everyday problems
Ken Shigematsu remembers it well: When he came out as a gay man, it was a community of transgender people in his home state of Hawaii that embraced and helped him through a difficult time in his life. "What mattered to me was that they were interested in ensuring I was safe, nurtured and loved," says Shigematsu, now a social worker and team leader at the S.F. AIDS Foundation. His office is in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, home to a tightly knit community of transgender women, and where the same sense of community and support exists. HIV infection among San Francisco's self-identified transgender community is thought to be at a rate even higher than that which exists in the gay men's community. Because of the stigma that often accompanies the physical changes transgender women manage, it is very difficult for these women to find acceptance mainstream society as well as gaining meaningful and sustaining employment. As a result, many engage in basic survival activities such as exchanging sex or drugs for money, or becoming wholly dependent upon other individuals for support. "There are definitely issues of self-esteem, domestic violence, suicidal ideology and depression," says Shigematsu.

    HIV
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus. You may hear that someone is "HIV infected", "has HIV infection", or "has HIV disease." These are all terms that mean the person has HIV in his or her body and can pass the virus to other people. HIV attacks the body's immune system. The immune system protects the body from infections and disease, but has no clear way to protect it from HIV. Over time, most people infected with HIV become less able to fight off the germs that we are all exposed to every day. Many of these germs do not usually make a healthy person sick, but they can cause life-threatening infections and cancers in a person whose immune system has been weakened by HIV. People infected with HIV may have no symptoms for 10 or more years. They may not know they are infected. An
