    Program
    Purpose
The Wisconsin AIDS/HIV Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), authorized by s. 49.686 of the Wisconsin statutes, is designed to maintain the health and independence of persons living with HIV infection in Wisconsin by providing access to HIV-related antiretroviral drugs and prophylactic medications as well as vaccines for hepatitis A and B. The ADAP formulary also includes hepatitis C virus (HCV) medications for persons co-infected with HIV and HCV. To be eligible to receive benefits under the ADAP, an individual must:
    • live in Wisconsin; have HIV infection, confirmed by a physician; have no or insufficient third party payment; and have a family income that does not exceed 300% of the federal poverty guideline.
    Client access and benefits
ADAP applications are available statewide through AIDS service organizations, community-based organizations, and the offices of physicians specializing in the treatment of HIV disease. Completed applications are mailed to the ADAP at the Division of Public Health (DPH) for eligibility screening. The ADAP sends eligibility approval letters to the client and the client-selected pharmacy. The pharmacy receives both the approval letter and the physician's prescription for ADAP drugs. The designated pharmacy dispenses a 30-day supply of approved medications to the client and submits billing for these prescriptions to the ADAP.

Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic over 20 years ago, stigma has been a barrier to HIV prevention and care. The effect of stigma on people's ability to access HIV testing, counseling, diagnosis, care, treatment, and prevention messages varies from setting to setting, but when present, stigma can create an environment where people may avoid HIV-related services. Introduction
Eustice, 19, is head of this household in Zambia. Her parents and elder sister died of AIDS. The young were once considered relatively safe from HIV/AIDS. Today, more than half of all new infections strike people under the age of 25. Girls are hit harder and younger than boys. Infant and child death rates have risen sharply, and 14 million children are now orphans because of the disease. The world’s two billion children and adolescents are at the center of the HIV/AIDS crisis. And yet they are the ones who offer the greatest hope for defeating the epidemic. UNICEF works closely with young people on preventing new infections. Young people are clear on what they need to make healthy and informed choices: knowledge and life skills, youth-friendly and gender-sensitive services and a protective familial, social and legal environment. UNICEF also works to prevent parent-to-child transmission of HIV and helps communities provide care, protection and support to children orphaned and made vulnerable by the disease.

HIV begins its infection of a susceptible host cell by binding to the CD4 receptor on the host cell. CD4 is present on the surface of many lymphocytes, which are a critical part of the body's immune system. Recent evidence indicates that a coreceptor is needed for HIV to enter the cell. This recognition of HIV coreceptors and progress in understanding how HIV fuses with the cell has opened up new possibilities for antiviral drugs. A number of new agents are being designed to prevent infection by blocking fusion of HIV with its host cell. Following fusion of the virus with the host cell, HIV enters the cell. The genetic material of the virus, which is RNA, is released and undergoes reverse transcription into DNA. An enzyme in HIV called reverse transcriptase is necessary to catalyze this conversion of viral RNA into DNA. Inhibitors of reverse transcriptase, such as AZT, were the first anti-HIV medications, and are still a critical part of treating patients who have HIV. Reverse transcriptase inhibitors are divided into two classes-nucleoside analogues and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors-based on their structure and how they inhibit reverse transcriptase. Once the genetic material of HIV has been changed into DNA, this viral DNA enters the host cell nucleus where it can be integrated into the genetic material of the cell. The enzyme integrase catalyzes this process, and inhibitors of integrase are under study as a new way to block HIV replication. Once the viral DNA is integrated into the genetic material of the host, it is possible that HIV may persist in a latent state for many years. This ability of HIV to persist in certain latently infected cells is the major barrier to eradication or cure of HIV. For this reason, based on our current knowledge, patients must remain on anti-viral therapy for life.

    HIV og AIDS
    • Hvad er HIV og hvad er AIDS ?
HIV står for human (menneske) immundefekt virus.
