BBC News, Cape Town
The battle to provide cheap ARVs in South Africa has been a long one A year after the ruling ANC party's third election victory, opposition politicians and HIV pressure groups say the South African government has failed to keep its pledges over HIV/Aids.
More than five million South Africans are HIV positive. For several years after the virus become widespread the South African government's policy was not to make anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) available to all the people who were HIV positive. The government was not convinced that ARVs were a cost-effective way of treating HIV. That position changed in November of 2003 when the cabinet voted to provide ARVs across the board. But critics of the government say the progress since then has been too slow. Political will?

Earlier studies focused on how alcohol consumption increased the chance of someone having unprotected sex and therefore risking HIV infection. But the team from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) looked at how alcohol affected cells. The research is published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. We urge people to enjoy the festive season safely
Deborah Jack, National Aids Trust Cells from the lining of the mouth, the epithelium, were obtained from people who were HIV negative. The cells were then exposed to various concentrations of alcohol, similar to those found in beers, and then to a strain of HIV which had been modified with green fluorescent protein so that researchers could see if it infected cells. It was found that epithelial cells which had been exposed to 4% of ethanol for 10 minutes showed between a three to six-fold greater susceptibility to infection from the HIV strain.

By John Lauritsen

7 Jan. 1991
[revised 16 Jan. 1991] Those who have eyes to see are witnessing genocide-the genocide of gay men. Millions of dollars are now being spent on an international advertising campaign, "Living With HIV", in which gay men and other members of "risk groups" are being told: Get tested for antibodies to HIV [the alleged "AIDS virus"] if you "test positive" you need "medical intervention" which could "put time on your side". The "medical intervention" is AZT (also known as Retrovir and zidovudine), and the campaign is paid for, directly and indirectly, by Burroughs-Wellcome, the manufacturer of AZT. The campaign consists of a phoney diagnosis followed by a lethal treatment. Already tens of thousands of objectively healthy gay men have been scared and bullied and bamboozled into taking AZT, allegedly in order to "slow the progression to AIDS". Optimism regarding their prognosis would be foolish. Except for the lucky few who stop "treatment" in time, they will die. Death is the expected biochemical consequence of taking AZT, for the fundamental action of the drug is to terminate DNA synthesis, the very life process itself. As Joseph Sonnabend has stated, "AZT is incompatible with life". Without a single benefit demonstrated by honest and competent research, AZT can do nothing but kill.(1)

Nutrition and HIV/AIDS
Nutritional status is strongly predictive of survival and functional status among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/A). Nutritional problems may occur at any stage of disease and can contribute to impaired immune response, accelerate disease progression, increase the frequency and severity of opportunistic infections, and impede the effectiveness of medications. Fortunately, many nutritional disturbances are preventable and manageable. Now more than ever, the management of HIV disease necessitates substantial expertise in nutrition. Ideally, all PLWH/A should have access to the services of a registered dietitian with expertise in HIV/AIDS who can provide nutrition assessments, counseling, and education and help determine whether the client has adequate access to food. For many providers, finding an experienced nutrition professional can be challenging due to budget restraints or because of a lack of available dietitians. Fortunately, many tools and guidelines have been developed to assist the entire clinical care team in integrating nutritional counseling and treatment into primary care (see box, page 4).
Nutritional Problems and HIV/AIDS
The medical and physiological sources of nutritional problems associated with HIV/AIDS may be grouped into three general categories: inadequate intake, poor absorption, and altered metabolism.
