    AIDS/HIV Infection
This booklet has been designed to present basic information on what AIDS/HIV infection is, how it is transmitted, and how to take care of yourself or someone else who is HIV infected at home. Included are measures to prevent the spread of HIV and to protect those who have HIV. AIDS and the Immune System AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is caused by a virus, referred to as HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This virus directly invades the bodys immune system, especially the cells that are called helper T-cells. Helper T-cells are found in lymph nodes throughout the body. They are responsible for stimulating the production of antibodies, which fight infections. In persons infected with HIV, antibodies that are responsible for attacking and killing foreign substances in the body are not formed. This makes the patient susceptible to the diseases produced by foreign substances, such as bacteria, virus, fungus, protozoa, mycobacteria, and cancer.

No. 82 July 2005 IK Notes http//www.worldbank.org/afr/ik/ Agriculture, trees and HIV/AIDS For a long time, HIV/AIDS was viewed as purely a health issue. Yet HIV/AIDS has implications that reach far beyond health - including great impacts on agricultural and food production systems. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), most infected people live in rural areas and HIV/AIDS has become mostly a rural problem. In largely rural-based economies, it is unlikely that the epidemic can be controlled without the effective support of the agricultural sector, which is in a strong position to assist in both the prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS. Equally, however, there are limitations to the extent to which the health or agricultural sector can operate independent of each other in this regard, and for this reason a multi-sectoral approach is crucial. Agrobiodiversity and Local Knowledge for strengthening rural livelihoods Strengthening the agricultural system means a focus not on problems, but on internal strengths and external opportunities. African communities have, over centuries, developed a diverse resource base of cultivated and wild plants, trees and livestock, and site- and gender-specific knowledge which has enabled them to sustain and enhance their livelihoods. This diversity of plants and animals is termed "agricultural biological diversity" - Agrobiodiversity - and the knowledge about these resources - here termed Local Knowledge. Agrobiodiversity and Local Knowledge are two very important internal strengths of rural communities.

Diet, a Potent Weapon Against HIV
Bertha Shoko
Nutrition plays an important role in the health of People Living with HIV/Aids (PLWAs).
If a PLWA does not have access to anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) due to reasons such as affordability, eating the right foods can improve the health and quality of life their life. A poor diet impairs the proper functioning of the immune system and increases the progress of HIV infection to Aids. But even for those who are on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) because they are either beneficiaries of a sponsored programme or because they can afford it, drug therapy should be complemented by a healthy and body building diet. ART without enough food is poisonous, dangerous and could result in serous illness further weakening the immune system, nutritionists warn. Though nutrition is not a substitute for treatment, there is no doubt of the immense benefits it has to a PLWA. In Zimbabwe, however, malnutrition is the number one cause of death of "Hivers". With a deteriorating economy and half the population living in poverty, many people cannot afford at least three meals a day. Many can also not afford the high medical fees for treatment of opportunistic infections.

The U.S. Anti-AIDS Program
http://www.cfr.org/
by Sharon Otterman, staff writer, cfr.org What's the status of President Bush's anti-AIDS program?
It is expected to be funded by Thanksgiving, after which it will get under way. The unprecedented $15 billion, 5-year plan to dramatically reduce HIV/AIDS infections worldwide was passed by Congress in May and signed into law by President Bush. Congress is now deciding the funding level for the plan's first year. The White House requested $2 billion, and the Senate is pushing to raise that to $2.4 billion. Why is there a dispute over the funding?
The legislation passed by Congress - the United States Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act of 2003 - authorizes $3 billion to be spent in each of the next five years. The White House asked for only $2 billion for 2004 because it says ramping up the program over time will be more efficient. AIDS activists have criticized this decision, arguing that more money is needed urgently to treat the 42 million HIV-infected people worldwide. Because Congress must fund the program on an annual basis, activists are also worried that the full $15 billion will not materialize if the political will in Washington weakens. These arguments have found a more sympathetic hearing in Congress than they have in the White House.

Background
Each year, millions of infants and children die needlessly due to simple infections, parasitic diseases and malnutrition. Conditions of poverty and malnutrition contribute to compromised immune function and increased susceptibility to infection. HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria are also having a serious public health impact in the developing world as diseases of poverty. HIV/AIDS and TB have significant impact on nutrition at the level of the individual, household and nation (Read:

VIRUSMYTH HOMEPAGE
HIV VOODOO FROM BURROUGHS-WELLCOME By John Lauritsen New York Native 7 Jan. 1991 [revised 16 Jan. 1991]
Those who have eyes to see are witnessing genocide-the genocide of gay men. Millions of dollars are now being spent on an international advertising campaign, "Living With HIV", in which gay men and other members of "risk groups" are being told: Get tested for antibodies to HIV [the alleged "AIDS virus"] if you "test positive" you need "medical intervention" which could "put time on your side". The "medical intervention" is AZT (also known as Retrovir and zidovudine), and the campaign is paid for, directly and indirectly, by Burroughs-Wellcome, the manufacturer of AZT. The campaign consists of a phoney diagnosis followed by a lethal treatment. Already tens of thousands of objectively healthy gay men have been scared and bullied and bamboozled into taking AZT, allegedly in order to "slow the progression to AIDS". Optimism regarding their prognosis would be foolish. Except for the lucky few who stop "treatment" in time, they will die. Death is the expected biochemical consequence of taking AZT, for the fundamental action of the drug is to terminate DNA synthesis, the very life process itself. As Joseph Sonnabend has stated, "AZT is incompatible with life". Without a single benefit demonstrated by honest and competent research, AZT can do nothing but kill.(1)

FEEDING HOPE:  NUTRITION PLAYS KEY ROLE IN HIV/AIDS CARE
FAO/WHO Publish New Manual for People Living with HIV/AIDS
(Reissued as received.)
Geneva/Rome, 25 February (FAO) A good diet is one of the simplest means of helping people living with HIV/AIDS and may even help delay the progression of the deadly virus, two UN agencies said today.
A new manual published jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the relationship between infection and nutrition and offers simple and practical dietary suggestions for the estimated 42 million people living with HIV/AIDS.
By bolstering the immune system and boosting energy levels, balanced nutrition can help the body fight back against the ravages of the disease.  By maintaining body weight a good diet can support drug treatments and prevent malnutrition.
Almost 95 per cent of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing countries where health care, resources and drugs are scarce.  For them a balanced diet is a positive way of responding to the illness.
Dr Graeme Clugston, Director of WHO's Department for Nutrition in health and Development, confirmed the need to pay special attention to the role of nutrition
