Man Defies AIDS With Diet, Strong Will
David Patient has lived almost half of his 43 years as an HIV-positive South African, defying all medical odds. What's even more unusual: This healthy man takes no anti-retroviral drugs for his condition. Instead, his only weapons have been a hardy dietary plan and an unbending will to live. Defying the experts, his regimen has been more than enough. Currently, Patient is touring Africa to share his ideas with other HIV-positive people. His ideas and passion for sharing them is sorely needed. Some 26 million people with HIV live in the region of Africa south of the Sahara Desert alone, or more than half of the people with HIV in the world. Rather than encourage fellow individuals with HIV to follow the typical plan, which includes condom use, Patient emphasizes nutrition that improves their immune systems, extends their lives and lowers their chances of infecting loved ones.

FACT SHEET: HIV/AIDS and Alternative Therapies NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH; Office of Alternative Medicine - Fact Sheet #7 - June 1994 What is Alternative Medicine? The terms "alternative," "complementary," or "unconventional" therapy cover a broad range of healing philosophies and approaches. Some approaches are consistent with physiological principles of Western medicine, while others constitute independent healing systems. Some therapies are so far outside the realm of accepted medical theory and practice that they are difficult to subject to standard evaluative techniques. How Does Alternative Medicine Fit Into the Treatment of HIV Disease? At the beginning of the epidemic, little or no treatment was available for people with HIV/AIDS. Although as yet there is no cure, over the last decade researchers have identified a number of drugs that slow progression of the virus as well as therapies to treat the many opportunistic infections that attack people with HIV disease. The key to effective treatment is early detection and intervention. Some early treatments aim to strengthen the immune system, help patients reduce stress, and maintain good nutritional practices and appropriate exercise regimens. Many of the alternative therapies described below place significant emphasis on these lifestyle issues. Taking an active role in any disease is an important adjunct to treatment. Consideration of alternative therapies in conjunction with conventional medicine may offer additional opportunities for persons living with HIV/AIDS to be proactively involved in their treatment.

Upside-Down Nutrition Being Alive; March 1994
Jennifer Jensen, MS, RD (This article is about suitable nutrition principles for most people with HIV/AIDS. If you are in doubt, consult with your physician or nutritionist.) Fascinating Facts Studies confirm that when living with HIV/AIDS, those who change their diets use guidelines for prevention of other diseases like heart disease and cancer. Don't misunderstand prevention of these maladies is very important. But, with HIV/AIDS, there is little risk of either, except for immune-related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and lymphomas. Another fascinating fact: Heart-healthy aerobic exercise, while important for everyone's health program, is not to be overdone; it's important to emphasize muscle-building exercises like lifting weights and other resistance work. So, when deciding how to conduct our nutritional selves, we'll read advice in magazines and newspapers, see it on TV, hear it on radio, and overhear gossip. Do you think these communications are targeted to HIV+ America? No way! What everyone reads and hears about is diet advice for middle-class, "Norman Rockwell" America. We hear that a diet high in saturated fat, for example, is bad because it raises blood cholesterol. The HIV/AIDS counterpoint is that some saturated fat such as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) can be the perfect fat type for us and MCT is totally saturated! Coconuts are full of MCT; in fact, their milk and flesh are almost all fat and it's 97% saturated! A heart patient could have a coronary just looking at coconuts!

HIV-AIDS and The Coconut Diet Can coconut oil reduce the viral load of HIV-AIDS patients? "Initial trials have confirmed that coconut oil does have an anti-viral effect and can beneficially reduce the viral load of HIV patients" , University of the Philippines' Emeritus professor of pharmocology Dr. Conrato S. Dayrit said. A minimum of 50 ml of coconut oil would contain 20 to 25 grams of lauric acid, which indicates that the oil is metabolized in the body to release monolaurin which is an antibiotic and an anti-viral agent. Among the saturated fatty acids, lauric acid has the maximum anti-viral activity, he said. Based on this research, the first clinical trial using monolaurin as monotherapy on some of the HIV patients was conducted recently. Dr. Dayrit's conclusions after the study: "This initial trial confirmed the anecdotal reports that coconut oil does have an anti-viral effect and can beneficially reduce the viral load of HIV patients. The positive anti-viral action was seen not only with the monoglyceride of lauric acid but with coconut oil itself. This indicates that coconut oil is metabolized to monoglyceride forms of C-8, C-10, C- 12 to which it must owe its anti-pathogenic activity."

Martin Delaney In the past year, there has been a noisy resurgence of claims that HIV does not cause AIDS and that AIDS is not contagious. Proponents of this view insist that AIDS is caused by personal behavior, notably drug abuse, or by the drugs used to treat AIDS. This view was first stated back in 1987 by Peter Duesberg, a professor of molecular biology at the University of California, Berkeley, who today is viewed as the leader of the "HIV denialist" movement.* Duesberg's claims have been debated and refuted repeatedly in scientific journals and even by a special panel assembled by the National Academy of Sciences. *Editor's note: While this issue of FOCUS does not include an article by an "HIV denialist," the Clearinghouse on pages 4 and 5 does include a list of articles and organizations representing both sides of the issue. Over the years, there have been dozens of new discoveries that further strengthen the evidence that HIV causes AIDS, including most recently, the success of combination HIV antiviral treatment. Today, nearly every physician treating HIV-infected people has seen how suppressing levels of HIV causes the clinical symptoms of disease to disappear. Though there are debates about the optimum time to start treatment, and while its effects may not be permanent and may come at the cost of side effects, the reduction in the death toll has been dramatic, leaving little room to doubt that HIV is the driving factor in AIDS.

Library HOME MISSION ... SITE POLICY Author: WHO Document Type: Other Contributing Partner: WHO Publication Date: 5 Apr 2005 Summary: 30 March 2005 HIV progressively damages the immune system, which can make a person susceptible to a range of opportunistic infections and lead to conditions such as weight loss, fever and diarrhoea. Description: These HIV-related conditions can lower food intake by reducing appetite and interfering with the body's ability to absorb food. HIV also alters metabolism which can often lead to increased energy and nutrient requirements for people with HIV-infection. People with HIV who are also suffering from hunger and/or nutritional deficits are more likely to fall ill with opportunistic infections and less likely to be able to recover from them. In addition, people who are sick with HIV-related illnesses are also less able to work normally, to earn income or to produce food, which can lead to nutritional deficits both for themselves and for their dependants. As in the population at large, a good diet that provides the full range of essential micronutrients is important to the health of people infected with HIV and can help bolster the immune system, boost energy levels and maintain body weight and well-being. Guidelines published jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2003 offer simple dietary suggestions for people living with HIV and AIDS.[1]

Nutrition for AIDS and HIV infected patients
When one is infrected with the HIV virus they should be cautious of their nutritional intake, to help maintain health and lifespan.
There is still no cure for AIDS, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and there is not a set diet for a person with HIV, which is the virus that causes the disease, AIDS. But good nutrition can play a part in preventing weight loss and other AIDS complications. When patients are diagnosed with HIV, Doctors will usually advise the patients while they are not ill, to seek nutritional advice from a qualified clinical dietician. This helps the patient prepare and learn about nutrition. Maintaining a healthy diet with AIDS is complicated, due to a person with AIDS often has cases of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, a loss of appetite either from the disease itself or the medication they take. AIDS affects the digestion system also, which makes it hard for the body to absorb essential vitamins and minerals such as folate, riboflavin, thiamine, and vitamins B6 and B12. A person with AIDS, often experiences rapid weight loss, when this happens patients have to be fed through tubes, if nutrients are not being absorbed properly doctors will often prescribe this procedure even if there is no rapid weight loss. The HIV virus attacks the immune system this makes a person not able to defend against infections and diseases. There is a higher risk of HIV infected persons to get food poisoning from bacteria such as salmonella, shigella and campylobacter. These bacteria can cause death to HIV positive persons. Because of this people with HIV or people who prepare food for HIV patients need to pay close attention to food safety.
