Current Research Program My research focuses on the large brown algae, the kelp (Laminariales). Presently, our laboratory is concentrating on two aspects of kelp biology: 1. evolution and population genetic diversity and 2. marine agronomy. Evolution and genetic diversity are being explored using molecular tools. Our contributions are most advanced in our evolution studies. We have examined chloroplast and ribosomal DNA diversity among kelp species, genera and families, and between the kelp order Laminariales, other orders of brown algae, and other divisions of plants. These studies have provided provocative insights into kelp evolution; for example: 1. We were able to demonstrate a surprisingly close evolutionary relationship of kelp and the freshwater fungus Achlya . 2. On the basis of ribosomal and chloroplast DNA data we have proposed that the taxonomy of the Laminariales is greatly inflated and suggested a reduction of advanced families of kelp from three to one, a reduction of kelp genera from 25 to five, and a reduction of kelp species from well over 100 to 25. 3. Application of a molecular clock to our DNA data suggests kelp genetically diverged 16-22 million years ago, thus, evolving simultaneously with the modern terrestrial legumes. Earlier estimates, based on questionable fossil fragments, had these 3dinosaurs of the plant world2 diverging very much earlier.

Information about the Commonwealth of Kentucky
(Photograph of a typical bottomland hardwood forest wetland that dominated much of KY prior to the 1800's. At the state and federal levels, there is interest in preserving and recreating these systems to recover lost wetland functions, such as water quality improvement, habitat, and recreation. The SWBL at UK is investigating how well the replacement, or mitigated wetlands, are performing biogeochemical C, N, and P cycling processes compared to "pristine" bottomland hardwood forest wetlands. This information is necessary to properly identify suitable sites, and monitor, and manage mitigated wetlands so that the "No Net Loss" wetland goal can be achieved. Exciting new results!!! Research Aerobic and anaerobic microbial ecology and diversity in the soil-water-rhizosphere environment Microbial transformations of organic and inorganic pollutants Regulators of microbial processes Bioavailability of pollutants and environmental fate Biogeochemical processes affecting water quality in lakes and constructed/natural wetlands Soil bioremediation Research Justification Expanding agricultural and industrial production have significantly improved the socioeconomic status of many Kentuckians. Associated with some of these activities, however, are impeded soil and water quality that impact the health and quality of life for many citizens and the environment. The essence of Biogeochemistry is to gain an understanding of biological and chemical processes that govern the fate of contaminants in the environment, and to use this knowledge to develop solutions to environmental problems.

Plant Tissue Culture for Home Gardeners
Micropropagtion is an important alternative to more conventional methods of plant propagation. It involves production of plants from very small plant parts (e.g. buds, nodes, leaf segments, root segments etc.), grown aseptically (free from any microorganism) in a container where the environment and nutrition can be controlled. The resultant plants are genetically identical to parent plants. Whilst in a research laboratory such as that in the Department of Agronomy and Soil Science at UNE we use many high tech equipment to achieve plant production through tissue culture, it is important to note that many home gardeners and hobbyists could substitute the high tech equipment and instruments with ordinary house hold items.
Items Needed for Home Tissue Culture:
1 - A sterile still air cabinet used to transfer plants. A fish tank on its side makes an ideal transfer cabinet. Any perspex or glass chamber with dimensions of 50 cm (length), 40 cm (height) and 40 cm (depth) could easily be made into a transfer cabinet.
2 - A pressure cooker for sterilisation of media, instruments, water, paper towelling etc.

The durian tree
  • Tall tree of the jungle: up to 40 m Temp: 25 -30 C; evenly distrib. rainfall: 1,500 - 2000 mm
Long juvenility period, i.e. no. of years till first fruiting: 5-8-10 years Found mainly in lowland forests of Southeast Asia (maily Malaysia) with some species in peat swamp forests. Propagation: bud grafting: i.e. bud grafted on seedling rootstock Fruit yield: 10-40 fruits/tree in 1st yr.; up to 200 fruits after 10th yr. Threatened by deforestation. Suitable for light construction, door and window frames, wooden sandals, flooring, planking, plywood, sliced veneer and furniture. Limited durability, easy treatability
