Maize: Gift from America's First Peoples
Columbus did not realize that the gift of maize was far more valuable than the spices or gold he hoped to find. He had no way of knowing that the history of maize traced back some 8,000 years or that it represented the most remarkable plant breeding accomplishment of all time. He might have been embarrassed if he had understood that then, as now, this plant developed by peoples he judged poor and uncivilized far outstripped in productivity any of the cereals bred by Old World farmers wheat, rice, sorghum, barley, and rye. Were he alive today, he would certainly be astonished to see the extent to which the advent of maize has affected land use, food production, cuisine, and population growth around the world.
Walton Galinat, 1992, "Chilliesto Chocolate"
The Basic Facts
For a comprehensive summary of the biology, uses, nutritional value, origins, history, cultural and social significance of maize, see this article on maize , originally published (1997) in "The Encyclopedia of Mexico: Culture, History and Society." Even though the article focuses on the role and importance of the plant within Mexico, most of the introductory information has general applicability

Departmental Office (208) 356-2824 Agriculture is one of the most exciting majors in terms of opportunity, job satisfaction and placement potential. The Department of Agronomy and Ag Engineering has designed a program for students who wish to enter the field of work after one or two years or those who desire to transfer to a four-year school. The Agronomy and Ag Engineering Department prepares students for over 75 exciting and challenging employment specialties. Graduates from this department may continue studies at most four-year universities without credit transfer loss and are often the recipients of excellent scholarships from transfer schools. Agronomy is the study of plants (field crops) and soils and their ecological interactions with the surrounding environment. In the betterment of production of food and fiber (farming) and the development of Science Technology for the mankind. Young minds will find substance in discovering the secrets for tomorrow's food production and other fascinating careers both specialized or generalized as they choose.

D. SUBJECT/FIELD CODES The subject/field codes are used by responsible officers and alternate responsible officers in completing Forms IAP-66 for exchange visitors in their program. These codes indicate what subject or field of knowledge the exchange visitor is engaged in during the period of his or her program. The codes derive from the USIA publication entitled "Codes for Educational and Cultural Exchange." They must be used unless the responsible officer or the sponsoring organizations are notified by USIA of changes to these codes. Specifically, these codes are used for completing block 4 of the Form IAP-66, in the space marked "SUBJ/FIELD CODE." It is important to be as specific as possible. For example, if an exchange visitor is going to study literary criticism or speech, use the codes for those subjects, rather than the code for "literature, general." All the major subject fields (e.g., medicine, agronomy, etc.) in the subject/field code lists begin with a specialty field titled "general." Use this code if the activity is of a generalized nature, such as an undergraduate studying physics. Almost all major categories have a specialty field titled "miscellaneous" or "other", as in "languages, other." Use this code when a visitor is going to study a topic which is specific but which does not appear in the list. However, because the list of specialty fields is already quite inclusive, you should attempt to fit most subjects into the codes shown. If the responsible officer or alternate responsible officer has a question on the codes, contact the Program Designation Branch of the Exchange Visitor Program Services at USIA.

Excellent and highly teachable essay that begins with a picnic setting (with Old and New World foods) and progresses through the animals, diseases, agricultural techniques, etc., that are termed "the Columbian Exchange," concluding with a review of European colonization in the New World; includes linked illustrations and a bibliography. Be aware that syphilis is presented as a disease of New World origin although current research disputes this (see below). 92. Guidelines For Lawn Maintenance
In general, tall fescue is the lawn grass best adapted for use from Baltimore toWashington, For more information on watering consult agronomy Mimeo 88,
http://iaa.umd.edu/umturf/Cultural/Guidelines for Lawn Maintenance
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR LAWN MAINTENANCE IN MARYLAND Agronomy Mimeo 90 Revised January, 1993 INTRODUCTION Many homeowners do not realize that once the lawn has been established there are regular management practices that must be followed to insure lawn quality. This mimeo is intended to provide a quick reference to general lawn management principals. In addition to basic guidelines, the mimeo is designed as a reference source for more detailed information on specific c subjects. By adhering to the simple procedures outlined here-in many potential problems can be averted. It is instructive to begin by listing the reasons for a poor lawn. The most common causes are as follows: 1. Poorly adapted species or cultivar(s) were planted 2. Uncertified seed or sod was used 3. Mowing the lawn too closely or too infrequently 4. Improper use of fertilizers and limestone 5. Poor weed control practices 6. Poor watering practices 7. Shade, or poorly drained soils 8. Too much traffic or compaction of soil 9. Failure to annually replant areas damaged by diseases, insects or environmental stress TURFGRASS SPECIES AND CULTIVARS Information regarding the proper species and cultivars for Maryland lawns is provided in Agronomy Mimeo 77, "Turfgrass Cultivar Recommendations For Maryland." In general, tall fescue is the lawn grass best adapted for use from Baltimore to Washington, D.C. and southern counties as well as the Eastern Shore. Kentucky bluegrass provides the most aesthetically pleasing lawn turf, but it requires a higher level of maintenance than tall fescue. Perennial ryegrass cultivars have been greatly improved in recent years, but this species is not recommended for use on lawns due to its susceptibility to many diseases. Zoysiagrass is perhaps our best low maintenance grass for lawns, but is slow and expensive to establish (see Agronomy 69, "Planting and Care of a Zoysiagrass Lawn").

Agronomy 585 CREATIVE COMPONENT Spring 2002 Agronomy 585 may be taken for 2 credits (lecture only) or 3 credits (lecture and a creative component). For those wishing 3 credits, the additional credit will allow you an opportunity to complete a creative component in an area of your choosing. Although additional time and effort are required, you likely will find the creative component worthwhile. With the creative component, you will have an opportunity to thoroughly develop an interest area. The only requirement is that the topic you choose be outside your research area and deal with some aspect of soil microbiology or biochemistry . You will have three options for the creative component: a) a "hands-on" project in the laboratory, b) an extensive literature review article, or c) a research proposal. You need to choose your area of study by the third week of February and you will need to submit a preliminary proposal or a general outline (10 points). A.

General Requirements for Doctoral Degree
Admission
Prospective candidates for the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Education are admitted under the same procedures and requirements outlined in the General Regulations elsewhere in this Bulletin. A student must be admitted to a specific doctoral program, but admission does not mean admission to candidacy for the degree, which occurs only after satisfactory completion of the general oral examination.
Advisory Committee and Plan of Study
After the student has enrolled in the doctoral program, an advisory committee should be selected by the student, major professor and department head or chair. The advisory committee is responsible for developing the student's Plan of Study and conducting the doctoral general and final examinations. It should consist of at least three members of the faculty. At least two, including the major professor, must be members of the Graduate Faculty. The formal appointment of the advisory committee occurs when the Plan of Study is approved by the Graduate School.
