Elly Hushour backed into the goat dairy business when she went shopping for raw goat milk and came home with a doe and two kids. Since then her farm, based near Nazareth in eastern Pennsylvania, has gradually expanded to a dairy herd of 62, cheesemaking, 60 meat goats a year and a thriving breeding stock export business. Above: Elly's "girls" take a rest. More goat info: A reader assesses the meat goat market from his vantage point as president of the Kentucky Goat Producers' Association CASE STUDY: Tierra Wools, Part 2
From fleece to finished product
New! September 15, 2005. In part one, we described the hard work that goes into raising and marketing heirloom lamb. Transforming Churro wool into rugs and tapestriesthe focus of this installmentrequires more hard work, from shearing and washing to spinning, dyeing, weaving and managing the Tierra Wools' retail store. Pulse crop breeding, pathology, and agronomy for western Canada.
Study Leader B. Conner Objectives:
  • To develop food and feed types of field pea cultivars for the Canadian prairies. The major goals include high seed yield, disease resistance, lodging resistance, suitable maturity and good seed quality characteristics. To identify and develop pea lines with improved resistance to mycosphaerella blight, powdery mildew, Fusarium wilt and the root rot complex, which are the major diseases of field peas in western Canada and to reduce losses from these diseases through biological control, chemical control and cultural practices, and the integration of these methods. To identify agronomic practices useful in the production of pulse crops that improve return on investment to producers as well as agronomic practices that improve sustainability of the soil resource base. To develop or identify field bean cultivars with early maturity, high yield, high quality, upright plant habit, and disease resistance for Manitoba production.
