  • Purpose/Objective
  • Description of the Curriculum Undergraduate : This field of study is the branch of agriculture that deals with the theory and practice of field-crop production and soil management. It involves the application of basic sciences such as botany, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, mathematics, microbiology, and physics to food and fiber production and to solving environmental problems. Careers in Crop and Soil Environmental Science majors exist in biotechnology, environmental sciences, international agriculture, the dynamic high-tech world of agriculture as well as in traditional agriculture. Graduate/Ph.D. The M.S. (nonthesis option) degree in agronomy is for students who do not plan research careers or do not plan to pursue a Ph.D. It may be suited for students who pursue a career in business, educational or administrative areas that don’t require research. The Ph.D. (thesis option) degrees require a dissertation or thesis. Areas of specialization include plant breeding and genetics; forage systems; physiology; ecology, production and management; cellular biology and molecular genetics; and weed science.
  • Mission Statement: The mission of the agronomy department is to educate students in the agronomic sciences. In addition, the mission includes the development of the science and technology for the most efficient operation of agronomic crop production systems; documentation of the ecological and economic sustainability of that technology; and transfer of the most appropriate science and technology to the agricultural community and students through Cooperative Extension and Resident education programs. The programs linked to this mission respond to local, regional, national, and global programs.

However, increasing numbers of European farmers are adopting some or all of the principles of conservation tillage. Recent European Conservation Agriculture Federation (ECAF) estimates suggest that the percentage of agricultural land under conservation tillage in the 3 SOWAP countries ( UK, Belgium and Hungary) is 30%, 10% and 10%, respectively. Thus far, uptake of conservation tillage in Europe has mainly been driven by the need to reduce production cost. However, conservation tillage can also deliver a range of environmental benefits that are increasingly being sought by society. A recent review, Holland (2003), listed the primary environmental benefits of conservation tillage as: reduced water runoff and soil erosion, increased carbon sequestration, a richer soil biota and improved food supplies for birds. The increasing emphasis that the EU Commission and member states are placing on environmental protection, e.g.
