What to look for, the signs of footrot
The signs of infection vary from mild reddening (inflammation) of the interdigital skin (skin between the digits or toes) to complete separation of the horn of the hoof. Infection commences when bacteria lodge on the interdigital skin causing inflammation; the skin-horn junction then begins to erode and the horn starts to lift. From this point, the bacteria move under the horn causing separation of horn around the heel, sole, toe and eventually to the outer wall.
Figure 1. Parts of a sheep's foot.
Sheep infected with footrot become progressively more lame and exhibit the following signs in progressive order: Inflamed, red and moist skin between the digits. A grey pasty scum between the digits. Lifting of skin-horn junction between digits. Under-running or separation of horn around heel, sole, toe and finally to the outside hoof wall.

The U.S. Agriculture and Forestry Greenhouse Gas Inventory: 1990-2001 (USDA GHG Inventory) is a comprehensive assessment of greenhouse gas emissions and sinks in U.S. agriculture and forests. The USDA GHG Inventory provides extensive, in-depth emissions and sinks estimates for livestock, cropland, and forests, as well as energy consumption in livestock and cropland agriculture. Estimates are provided at State, regional, and national scales, categorized by land ownership and management practices where possible. Information in the report can be used to identify opportunities to reduce emissions and enhance sinks through agriculture and forest management. The report was prepared collaboratively with contributions from the Unites States Department of Agriculture (Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Agricultural Research Service, Office of Energy Policy and New Uses, and the Global Change Program Office), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and researchers at Colorado State University. The estimates in the USDA GHG Inventory are consistent with those published by the EPA in the official

Triticale
Download pdf - 104K Spring triticale Winter triticale Triticale ( X Triticosecale Wittmack) is a man-made crop developed by crossing wheat ( Triticum turgidum or Triticum aestivum ) with rye ( Secale cereale
Early attempts to cross wheat and rye produced only sterile offspring. It was not until the 1930s that techniques were available to produce fertile hybrids. Once this step was accomplished, it was possible to develop new combinations between wheat and rye as well as direct combinations between triticales with differing wheat and rye parents. Consequently, new varieties of winter or spring triticale can be developed with the same methods used for breeding other cereal crops.
In 1953, the University of Manitoba began the first North American triticale breeding program. Early breeding efforts concentrated on developing a high yielding, drought tolerant human food crop species suitable for marginal wheat producing areas. In contrast, more recent programs concentrate on developing improved animal feed and fodder varieties for production under a number of diverse environmental conditions. Table 1 shows a historical list of spring and winter triticale cultivars.
Spring Triticale
Drought tolerance is the primary advantage that spring triticales have over other spring cereal crops. Under dryland conditions, spring triticales are a valuable alternative to feed barley and oats. Spring triticale has a 5 to 19 per cent yield advantage over Spring wheat (CPS), see Table 2. This advantage is most apparent in areas with longer growing seasons.

overview
Rural America is home to a fifth of the Nation's people, keeper of natural amenities and national treasures, and safeguard of a unique part of American culture, tradition, and history. Today, rural America comprises over 2,000 counties, contains 75 percent of the Nation's land, and includes 49 million people. ERS research explores how investments in rural people, businesses, and communities affect the capacity of rural economies to prosper in the new and changing global marketplace. Equally important is our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the Nation's small farmers who are increasingly dependent on these rural economies for their employment and economic support. Seeding Triticale
Treatments
There are no seed treatments available. Dates
April 15 to May 15. Triticale must be sown as early as possible for maximum yields.
Rates
2 to 3 bu/acre depending on seed size to achieve a plant population of 24-30 plants/ft . See Calculation of seeding rates using plant population. Circumstances requiring heavier rates of seeding are large seed size, low germination, abundant moisture, deep seeding, heavy-textured soils, rough seed bed and heavy weed pressure. Seeding Depth
1 to 2 inches. Triticale should not be placed deeper than necessary to ensure contact with moist soil. Decreased emergence and weaker plants may result from deeper seeding.

Fisheries and Aquaculture
Commercial harvesting activities in British Columbia, whether they be the commercial harvest of wild species , or the raising of aquatic species on farms , are a vital element of the economy of the province.
What's New!
Aquaculture
Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2003, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $272.2 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three main species groups currently cultured in British Columbia waters:
Commercial Fisheries Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. In 2003, the landed value of the salmon, groundfish, shellfish and herring fisheries combined was $364.6 million.
