Back to El Salvador Society As indicated, El Salvador remained a largely rural country despite the growth of San Salvador and its environs. For the vast majority of rural residents, however, land shortages, unemployment and underemployment, and extremely low wages combined to keep the standard of living low and the quality of life barely tolerable.
    Standard of Living
In this largely agrarian society, land distribution continued to lie at the heart of the many problems afflicting the poor. In 1971, which as of 1988 was the date of the latest census, 92 percent of farms, some 250,500 in number, covered less than ten hectares each and together constituted only 27 percent of total farm area. These farms were the holdings of peasant laborers who planted basic foodstuffs such as corn, beans, rice, and sorghum on 95 percent of their holdings. They used rotational methods of agriculture in which individual plots were cultivated for about two years, then left fallow while another plot was tilled. The 8 percent of the farms with an area greater than ten hectares occupied the remaining 73 percent of farm area. Within this category, 1,941 farms between 100 and 500 hectares in size, representing 0.8 percent of the total number of farms, accounted for 38.7 percent of all land under cultivation. Less than 20 percent of this land produced basic grains. Farms of more than 500 hectares accounted for more than 15 percent of the cultivated land. These farms included the agricultural estates of the elite. The data actually understated the extent of land concentration within the upper sector, however, since some elite individuals owned more than one farm and some large farms were registered in the names of various family members in an effort to conceal family holdings.

    Rural Life
Because Honduras has traditionally been an agrarian country and, in spite of rapid rates of urban growth, is still one of the least urbanized countries of Central America, conditions of life in the countryside are a major concern. Rural residents are farmers, although about 60 percent of Honduran land remains forested and only 25 percent of the total is available for agriculture or pastureland. A vast majority of rural dwellers are small farmers who till their own plots or landless laborers who work for wages on estates or smaller farms (see the Lower Class , this ch.). Many peasants with plots of their own also seek part-time wage labor to supplement their incomes. In a typical case, a man may work his father's land, rent additional land of his own, and do occasional day labor. The trend toward small farms in marginal areas increased rapidly after 1960 as the population increased explosively. Because land inheritance among the peasantry is divided among all the sons, a farmer with six

Europe’s Common Agricultural Policy: A threat to birds
However, BirdLife’s scientific studies from the last 30 years have shown that 70% of the 173 different priority bird species which are dependent on farmland habitats in Europe are endangered. Many of them were once common: Skylarks ( Alauda arvensis ), Red-backed Shrike ( Lanius collurio ), Corn Bunting ( Miliaria calandra ), White Storks ( Ciconia ciconia ) and even Tree Sparrows ( Passer montanus ) in some countries. This dramatic decline is clearly associated with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which over the last 40 years has stimulated changes in land-use in Europe that have had a devastating effect on bird populations, other wildlife and natural habitats. The European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has encouraged more intensive and specialised farming through a system of production-related subsidies and export support. It fails to provide a sustainable farming system which protects nature and wildlife. Our current agricultural system damages the environment and our quality of life and does not offer value for money to the European consumer and taxpayer. We all currently pay for our food

Increase story text size Decrease story text size Print story WHILE many people recognise Pershore Group of Colleges for its excellent teaching, few will appreciate the huge impact the colleges have made on the local economy. The Vale of Evesham would not be the place it is today if it were not for Pershore College, not least because it is a major employer in the area. And yet anyone driving along the B4084 from Pershore to Evesham could easily miss the campus, set back from the road nestling among trees and shrubs. Richard Toft, who runs the Fruit and Organic Crop Unit, is quick to highlight the many virtues of the college. And with good reason. Over the years it has not only produced thousands of highly-trained horticulturists, it has also acted as a catalyst in rural communities, helping producers adapt to the many changes in farming.

UAES Director Mission Statement Utah Agricultural Experiment Station generates knowledge and new technology for improving the diverse system of agriculture and natural resources that feeds, clothes, houses and enhances the environment for Utah's citizens. Vision Statement The vital and unique endeavor could be called the science of survival. It is down-to-earth research that has the lofty mandate of improving human life. And although its successes tend to be taken for granted as a loaf of bread, it is as critical today as it was when the Legislature and Congress established the Station more than a hundred years ago. Today's Challenge The Experiment Station must maintain a permanent and effective agricultural industry, improve both urban and rural life, ensure that agriculture contributes to the welfare of consumers, and in the process help educate students who will carry on the mission. The Experiment Station must maintain a permanent and effective agricultural industry, improve both urban and rural life, ensure that agriculture contributes to the welfare of consumers, and in the process help educate students who will carry on the mission. At research facilities throughout the state, the Station oversees hundreds of research projects that promote agriculture, human nutrition, and enhance the quality of rural life. It operates labs that test soils, plant tissue, irrigation water and livestock feed. It researches food safety and processing, plant and animal genetics, and brings agricultural into harmony with our natural resources.

Over 40 volunteers have worked on the project to repackage the glass plate negatives in archival grade four flap enclosures and boxes. The volunteers have included overseas students, members of University staff, retired and unemployed people. The volunteers were trained by the project conservator, Brenda Lee to handle and package the plates correctly and informed of the conservation issues surrounding the project. The final element of the project is to undertake a conservation survey and compile a conservation action plan which will indicate the conservation requirements in the future. View the Images New!
