Agriculture Sheep Farming: (1810-1940) Valley Ridge Farm, Orwell Sheep farming in Vermont dates back to the 18th century when the state's earliest settlers brought sheep with them as part of their family agricultural operations. The early sheep were of no particular breed, and they were raised for the dual purpose of mutton and wool for the family. Beginning in the 1810s sheep farming began to develop from a largely subsistence operation into an industry that gave Vermont national prominence, first for the production of wool, and later for its superior sheep breeding. During the second half of the 19th century, sheep farming began to decline and was gradually eclipsed by the dairy industry. Stock Breeding (1790-1940) Marshfield, Vermont The history of stock breeding in Vermont dates back to the 1790s when Justin Morgan of Randolph Center advertised his colt for stud in 1793-4. The progeny of Morgan's horse made Vermont nationally famous in subsequent decades as the home state of the Morgan breed. However, it was not until the 1820s with the development of sheep farming that significant stock breeding occurred among other kinds of livestock. In the latter half of the 19th century, interest in stock breeding gained considerable importance as breeder associations were established, and animal husbandry in general developed into an increasingly specialized, scientific vocation. The funds for Illinois’ preservation project came from a long-term National Endowment for the Humanities grant that is administered by Cornell University – "the lead dog on this massive undertaking," Zumalt said. Cornell, on behalf of the U.S. Agricultural Information Network (USAIN), and in cooperation with a growing consortium of land grant universities, has received five large NEH grants over 10 years to preserve the most significant published materials on the history of state and local agriculture and rural life. Indian Agriculture in America
Prehistory to the Present
R. Douglas Hurt
xiv, 290 pages, 18 photographs, 6 x 9
Paper ISBN 0-7006-0802-8, $17.95 This is a sweeping survey of American Indian agriculture from its ancient origins to the present. It combines a wealth of historical, anthropological, legal, and economic information in a clear, readable synthesis. "This is without doubt the most thorough and comprehensive treatment of American Indian agriculture in print. It is multidisciplinary and impressive both in scope and in depth. Hurt shows a deft hand in summarizing not only the literature on the evolution of agriculture in North America, but also the dismal failure of American Indian policy to build on earlier Native American achievements. This book is the starting point for any serious consideration of the literature on subjects ranging from the domestication of corn, to pre-contact irrigation, to current Indian water rights." Richard White , author of It's Your Misfortune and None of My Own "This extremely worthwhile work is a significant contribution to both Indian history and general American history."

On the linked pages that follow, you will learn about the highlights of Agricultural Instruction that have been integral to SMS since before the beginning of the institution. Here is a bit of pre-SMS agricultural history: In 1904, the State Superintendent of Public Schools was W. T. Carrington. That year, he published a manual entitled, Elements of Agriculture for Public Schools. This manual was intended for distribution to all Missouri teachers. In his introduction, Mr. Carrington wrote: " Fifteen years ago the present State Superintendent of Public Schools spoke before county teachers' associations and grange meetings urging that the elements of agriculture be taught in the public schools.... Four years ago, the State Normal Schools established Departments of Agriculture and Nature Study." So it is no surprise that when the newest Normal School was established at Springfield in 1906, Agriculture was included.

A HISTORY OF WORLD AGRICULTURE
From the Neolithic Age to the Current Crisis by Marcel Mazoyer and Laurence Roudart
translated by James H. Membrez
Only once we understand the long history of human efforts to draw sustenance from the land can we grasp the nature of the crisis that faces humankind today, as hundreds of millions of people are faced with famine or flight from the land. From Neolithic times through the earliest civilizations of the ancient near East, in savannahs, river valleys and the terraces created by the Incas in the Andean mountains, an increasing range of agricultural techniques have developed in response to very different conditions. These developments are recounted in this book, with detailed attention to the ways in which plants, animals, soil, climate, and society have interacted. Mazoyer and Roudart's A History of World Agriculture is a path-breaking and panoramic work, beginning with the emergence of agriculture after thousands of years in which human societies had depended on hunting and gathering, showing how agricultural techniques developed in the different regions of the world, and how this extraordinary wealth of knowledge, tradition and natural variety is endangered today by global capitalism, as it forces the unequal agrarian heritages of the world to conform to the norms of profit.

54. Agricultural History
In fact, agriculture pervaded die history of Indianwhite contact. agriculture in the first two hundred years of American history was woodlands farming.
http://www.runningdeerslonghouse.com/webdoc265.htm
AGRICULTURE, INDIANS, AND AMERICAN HISTORY By Thomas Wessel Agricultural History , Vo. 50, No. 1, Jan. 1976, P. 9-20. Popular and historical concentration on the dramatic horsemen of the plains has clouded the significance of agriculture in Indian history. When Indian agriculture received attention, most dismissed it as a form of gardening or horticulture and thus unworthy of further consideration. Ironically, even after feasting, on maize, squashes, pumpkins, and a variety of beans, most contemporaries and later commentators described all Indians as a hunting culture bound to the trail of the deer and buffalo. In some cases, the observation was correct, although before the horse revolutionized the Indian societies of the Great Plains, few Indians lived, exclusively by the hunt. In fact, agriculture pervaded die history of Indian-white contact. From the earliest meetings between Europeans and Indians north of the Rio Grande agriculture played a fundamental role linking Indian and white destinies on this continent. Indian agriculture fed the first colonists at Jamestown and Plymouth and largely accounted for their survival. Indian crops and farming techniques sustained the early settlements and provided the United States and a good portion of the world with its most prolific feed grain. Agriculture was a vital ingredient in the fur trade, More often than not, frontiersmen (a euphemism for farmers), carried Indian agriculture into the woodlands farms of the Ohio and beyond. Agriculture in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries served as an official vehicle to assimilate the Indians. Throughout American history, in sometimes benign and sometimes tragic circumstances, agriculture forged a bond between Indians and whites in North America.

History of Agriculture in Cumberland County Welcome to Cumberland County - the "Garden Spot of the Garden State!" Agriculture has been an integral part of life and commerce in Cumberland County since pre-Revolutionary times. Original inhabitants and farmers of Cumberland County were Lenni Lenape Indians. The name means "Original People." Upon their first arrival nearly 10,000 years ago, Lenni Lenape tribes found little open land. They established villages close to streams and burned the forests to create open tillable fields. Indians knew the importance of good soil management. Wood ashes were turned into the soil; heads, tails and entrails of fish and game were buried for fertilizer. Weeds were destroyed, and water was supplied when necessary. Crops were simple corn, several kinds of beans, squash, pumpkins and melons. Swedish immigrants were among the first European farmers in South Jersey, beginning to cultivate the soil in the mid 1600's. Farming expanded in Cumberland County until 1776, when many of the farms were devastates by the British in the American Revolution.
