    About the Census of Agriculture
    History
How the Census of Agriculture began The British North America (BNA) Act of 1867 determined that a census would be taken every 10 years starting in 1871. However, rapid expansion in western Canada at the turn of the last century made a more frequent census necessary. Starting in 1896, a separate Census of Agriculture was taken every five years in Manitoba, and in Alberta and Saskatchewan beginning in 1906. Expansion of the Census of Agriculture By 1956, rapid economic growth and development created the need for both national demographic and agricultural information at more frequent intervals. In 1956, the five-year Census of Agriculture was extended to the entire country, and the Census of Population became a regular enumeration every five years. That year the two started a long tradition of being conducted concurrently. Relationship between the Census of Agriculture and the Census of Population Although the Census of Agriculture and the Census of Population are conducted at the same time, they do have separate questionnaires. Most of the development, testing, processing, data validation and preparation for disseminating data for the Census of Agriculture and the Census of Population is handled by different groups within Statistics Canada. However, collecting the data and sharing communications activities for both censuses streamlines procedures and reduces costs considerably. Another important benefit of conducting the two together is that information from the two questionnaires can be linked to create the Census of Agriculture-Population Linkage database. This unique database, started in 1971, provides users with a wealth of information pertaining to the social and economic characteristics of the farm population.

The organic fad is currently experiencing fairly rapid growth, and they are becoming know for their natural qualities and nutritional value. They are also becoming more and more appreciated for their quality and flavor. At its beginning however organic agriculture was favored by farmers and scientists who opposed the use of mineral and artificial fertilizers on plants.

    • 1840: Justus von Liebig developed a theory on mineral plant nutrition. He believed that mineral salts were the only nutrients plants needed and they could completely replace manure.
1910s: Just before the First World War, chemists Fritz Haber and Carl Bosh developed an ammonia synthesis process, making use of nitrogen from the atmosphere. This form of ammonia had already been used to manufacture explosives, and following the war was made available for fertilizer in agriculture.

The teaching of agriculture at the University of Maryland began with the opening of the Maryland Agricultural College in 1859. Agriculture remained a primary element of the curriculum when the Maryland General Assembly created the University of Maryland in 1920 by merging the campuses in Baltimore and College Park. The new University of Maryland in College Park was originally divided into thirteen educational units, including the College of Agriculture. The records of the college primarily document the tenure of Gordon M. Cairns as dean and consist of correspondence, reports, committee information, appointment books, budget files, financial ledger books, and photographs.

CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, GPO Box 284 Canberra, ACT 2601. www.cse.csiro.au Email graham.turner@csiro.au Abstract This paper describes three very different scenarios for the future of agriculture in Australia. Each scenario has a mixture of social, economic and environmental benefits and costs. The scenarios serve to challenge preconceptions about the future and focus attention on long-term sustainability of agriculture. A range of lessons for the future development of Australian agriculture are drawn from the scenarios and discussed. Media summary Future issues for the long-term sustainability of Australian agriculture are drawn from examining developments over the last 150 years and exploring three 50-year future scenarios. Key Words Australian agriculture, natural resources, sustainability, long-term futures.

    "How Does Your Garden Grow?"
    History of Agriculture
    Before Agriculture
Before agriculture, people lived by hunting wild animals and gathering edible plants. When the herds were plentiful and the plants flourishing, life was good. But, when the herds migrated elsewhere, people had to follow them and often discover a whole new set of plants to supplement their diet. Hunters eventually realized that their prey was much easier to kill if it were walled up in a box canyon. Better yet, they could capture the prey and keep it in a cave for future use. Archaeological finds show that early humans imprisoned giant ground sloth's in this way. Entrapment, however, was a temporary measure. Not thinking of the future, hungry humans gorged themselves, then, when the sloths had all been eaten, they sought out more sloths. maintaining a herd by breeding and nurturing wasn't yet practiced. This "feast or famine" lifestyle had its definite drawbacks including starvation. Fortunately, several geniuses throughout the world eventually discovered how to preserve meat by drying it, smoking it over a fire, or cooking it. some others realized that it they took the seeds of the plants they had been eating and scattered them about, they grew into new plants. Eventually, people decided that life would be a lot easier if they always had the animals with them and if edible plants or their produce were always available. Settling down seemed like a good idea.

Colonial Spanish agriculture (1565-1764), British agriculture (1764-1784) and the return of Spanish agriculture after the American Revolution (1784-1821) preceded the American experience, begun in 1821 when Florida was acquired as a territory of the United States. Statehood was achieved in 1845 at a time when a handful of antebellum plantations slowly spread throughout northern and north central Florida, and agriculture, citrus, cattle and naval stores were major economic resources for the new State. Nevertheless, the Seminole Wars, Civil War, Reconstruction took a toll on the State’s development. Agricultural literature for this period is sparse and did not become significant until formal agricultural experimentation began at the State’s land grant colleges. At the turn of the century 90% of the state's population was still rural and Florida's frontier-like character persisted well into the twentieth century. This changed significantly after World War II, which represents a watershed in agriculture and the application of engineering to solve everyday problems. In 1941 the UF Engineering and Industrial Experiment Station was established to assist in the development of Florida's agriculture, home life, and industry. It is this period of early agricultural development up to its modern changes (1820-1945) and the early development of engineered solutions to Florida's needs (1933-1970s) that is documented in these collections. Included are a bibliography, full-text copies of IFAS, FDACS, and EIES publications (not all series have been converted, but will become available over time), and photographs.

    Agricultural history of Peru
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Much of the pre-history of Peru has been wrapped up in where the farmable land was located. The most populated coastal regions of Peru are the two parallel mountain ranges and the series of twenty to thirty rivers running through the coastal desert. In dry periods only the mountains are wet enough for agriculture, and the desert coast is empty, while in wet periods many cultures have thrived along the rivers of the coast. The well known Inca were a mountain based culture that expanded when the climate became more wet, often sending counquered peoples down from the mountains into unfarmed, but farmable lowlands. In contrast the Moche were a lowland culture that died out after a long drought. Peru is both afflicted and blessed by a peculiar climate due to the Peru Current . Before overfishing killed it's fishery, Peru had the most productive fishery in the world due to the cold Peru Current. The current brings nutrients from a large portion of the Pacific floor to Peru's doorstep. On land, it results in a cold mist which covers coastal Peru to the extent that the desert plants have adapted to obtain water from the air instead of from the infrequent rainfall. The soil on the wet side of the mountains is thin, and the rivers on the dry side are few. This means all the water must be brought from the Atlantic side of the mountain ranges that split Peru. The ancient people of Peru built water moving and preserving technologies like the
