NH Agriculture in the Classroom
What is Ag in the Classroom?
New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom is part of a national effort to develop an understanding and appreciation of one of the nation's major industries - AGRICULTURE. We provide support and reinforcement for all educators in the task of helping young people develop an awareness of the diversity of New Hampshire agriculture, its contribution to the state's economy and a basic understanding of food production. For many reasons we have become an agriculturally illiterate society. With less than 2 percent of the population involved in production agriculture, the general population is far removed from their food source. This trend is having a harmful effect on agriculture. Up-to-date information concerning agriculture will help students understand the food and fiber system. Broader knowledge about agriculture and how it effects their world will help them make intelligent decisions tomorrow. There is little in our curriculum or text books about the modern food and fiber system. New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom works to provide educators with the necessary material, background information and local resources to integrate agricultural themes into their curriculum.
Why Is Agriculture So Important To NH?

Dairy Finance Tools
The following tools were designed for dairy farmers that want to get a better handle on their production costs and finances. All that is required to use these tools is Windows 95 or higher operating system, QuickBooks by Intuit, and Microsoft Excel. You can download these tools and learn how to keep financial records, compute the cost of producing 100 lbs of milk, develop a monthly budget, or understand the linkage between production and finance. And you don't need an MBA in finance to use these tools; all that is required is a willingness to learn. Note: These tools are made available electronically "as is" to the dairy industry at no charge to the user. The tradeoff is that support for these products via telephone or email will not be provided by the University of Missouri or by Ken Bailey. Instructions, however, are provided to assist users in learning to use these tools.
QuickBooks for Dairy Farmers
Using QuickBooks to Manage Your Dairy Farm New Publication! QuickBooks Startup Files
You can download a startup file for QuickBooks 6.0 of a dairy farm that is a sole proprietorship. This file contains no financial transactions of opening balances. It is already set up with a chart of accounts, items list, and classes that are common to dairy-type farms. In addition, we have developed a number of memorized transactions that will make your non automated accounting tasks in Quickbooks easier (i.e. depositing the milk check, accounting for farm raised feed, etc.).

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Section of Agriculture, Division of Agriculture and Mining, of the National Museum of History and Technology, has roots dating back to 1921 when "specimens and models of agricultural implements and objects relating to the history of agriculture in this country" began to be collected. From 1921 to 1932, these collections were kept as part of the textile collections. In 1932, a Section of Agricultural History was set up in the Division of Textiles, and a separate catalog was started. The Section became the Section of Agricultural Industries, Division of Crafts and Industries, in 1938 and retained that title until 1957. Frederick L. Lewton, curator of Textiles, was in charge of the agricultural collections from 1921 to 1946 when Fred C. Reed became associate curator for the Sections of Agricultural Industries and Manufactures. Reed was replaced as associate curator by Edward C. Kendall in 1951.

In the eighteenth century, the British New World colony of South Carolina prospered from the raising and exporting of rice. What does this have to do with linguistics, agriculture and development in the modern day? The answer is a salutary warning against unexamined assumptions: African agricultural technology created the prosperity of colonial Carolina. Many centuries before, peoples of the Guinea Coast of Africa evolved a sophisticated and highly efficient technology for growing abundant crops of African rice, Oryza glaberima. Taking advantage of the tidal estuaries of rivers flowing into the Atlantic, they built levees and channels to redirect the ebb and flow of the tides onto their fields. Before the planting season, African farmers channeled to their fields salty seawater flowing into the estuaries at high tide. Some days or weeks later, they let fresh water flow onto the plots: the salty water had killed the weeds and seeds, and then the fresh water washed away the salty water and leached the salt from the soil. At the same time, it deposited a fresh layer of silt, enriching the soil for the rice crop to be planted.

The 2004-2005 SLEWS year is over - 100 SLEWS field days! All 3 SLEWS programs ( Northstate San Joaquin , and Putah-Cache) have finished their program year. 2005 brought a great deal of rain, rain, and even more rain! Which mean our plantings thrived, but so did the weeds! Thanks to our many farmers and ranchers, partners, mentors, funders, teachers and students who make SLEWS such a success. Just last week (mid-June), the first sighting in 60 years of the endangered least Bell's vireo (a chatty songbird once common to the Central Valley) occurred on a unit of the San Joaquin National Wildlife Refuge, west of Modesto. This was a site that was restored in part by San Joaquin SLEWS students from Thomas Downey High School in Modesto, with the restoration group River Partners. Now that's success!
