Research My research areas could be broadly divided into following areas:
  • Industrial organization of the food industries - Primary focus is on the problems and issues related to food firm and industry organization and behavior, particularly relating to structure, conduct and performance. Past and current research include modeling and measurement of structure, conduct and performance of food industries and analysis of vertical coordination. Cooperatives Interest is mainly on cooperative theory and practice. Research in this area include analysis of integration incentives for farmer-owned cooperatives, conducting market potential studies for non-agricultural businesses and cooperatives, carrying out performance analysis of farmer-owned cooperatives, and examining the role of cooperatives in agricultural and rural development. Food marketing - Focus is on issues related to the economics of FAFH and FAH markets, consumer behavior, and marketing of agricultural products in developing countries.

Agriculture
The Imperial Valley's fertile soil and mild climate allow farmers to enjoy year-round planting, cultivation and harvest. In 2001, over 540,000 acres of Imperial Valley land was farmed to produce over $1 billion in field, vegetable and permanent crops. Background
The feasibility of irrigating the barren Imperial Valley with water from the Colorado River was recognized as early as the 1850s. It wasn't until 1901 that the California Development Company started diverting water to the Imperial Valley through a canal, called the Alamo, which had its heading in the United States but ran most of its course through Mexico. In 1905, a winter flood caused the Colorado River to jump its banks and flow freely into the Imperial Valley creating the Salton Sea. The sea is still used as a drainage basin for irrigation and storm runoff in the Imperial, Coachella and Mexicali valleys. The Imperial Irrigation District was formed in 1911 to acquire properties of the bankrupt California Development Company. By 1922, the district had also acquired the 13 mutual water companies that had developed and operated the distribution canals. Since 1942, the Imperial Valley has received its water through the All-American Canal, which runs its entire length in the United States. The 82-mile-long All-American Canal carries water from the Imperial Dam on the Colorado River west to agriculture and cities in the Imperial Valley.

Understanding Agricultural Drainage
AEX-320-97
Larry C. Brown
Andrew D. Ward
Agriculture is Ohio's largest industry. Because much of the state is characterized by fertile, flat soils and adequate rainfall, crop production occurs on 45 percent of Ohio's land area. About 55 percent of Ohio's agricultural soils need drainage improvement to minimize soil erosion, excess soil-water conditions in the plant root zone, and unfavorable field conditions for farm equipment in the spring and fall. Ohio's agricultural drainage needs are very similar to those in states such as Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Illinois and Louisiana. Nationally, drainage improvement is required on more than 20 percent of our cropland (approximately 110 out of 421 million acres). Maintaining existing water management improvements is quite important because proper management of the soil, and soil water, is required to sustain production and profitability on agricultural soils. In recent years, public concern has increased about the nature of agricultural drainage, and the impact of agricultural drainage improvements on the quality of Ohio's water resources and environment. This publication is designed to help Ohio's citizens understand the purpose and nature of agricultural drainage improvements, particularly those related to the drainage of excess water from cropland in Ohio.
