Agricultural training was one of the primary missions of the College from its beginnings. In the 1872 Catalog, Agriculture is listed as one of 13 courses of study. It consisted of lectures on: the selection, breeding, food, shelter, use, nature, and management of farm animals; dairy farming; soils; plants; landscape gardening; floriculture; farm economics; and building materials. Agriculture was one of the first four major administrative divisions created when Deans were appointed to the academic departments. In 1907-08, there was a School of Scientific Agriculture and a School of Agricultural Apprentices, but both were subordinate to the Department of Agriculture that had its own Dean. In 1920-21, the title was changed to School of Agriculture; then in 1964, it became the College of Agriculture. The name was changed to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1971.

Education and Training Opportunities in Sustainable Agriculture
During recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in formal and informal training programs about sustainable agriculture in all regions of the world. We decided it was the right time to pull together as much of the best information about these opportunities as would fit into an issue of the Ag-Sieve. What follows is a mini-directory of courses, degree programs and intensive workshops that cover the gamut in subjects dealing with sustainable agriculture, primarily in the tropical regions. Our editorial staff sent a mailing out in midsummer to more than 100 groups who offer such training opportunities. As of printing time, we have heard from about 75 of them, and have compressed much of the pertinent material into the following six pages. We will continue to update this information as more responses are received. Should there be any inaccuracies in the information presented below, please notify us promptly so we can update it before printing a more extensive listing next year. We know there are many other programs in every region that we have missed, and so would greatly appreciate hearing from readers who are aware of additional training programs not included in this first listing. For a cross-referenced table of what type of training is offered by each agency, see page 8.

December 3, 1999 Learn about Seed Biotechnology and its Role in the Future of Agriculture in Two New Courses from University Extension In light of the need for increased crop yields and nutritional quality to sustain the world’s exploding population, seed biotechnology is becoming an important industry. For example, protection from diseases and insects will increasingly be provided through genetically altered seeds rather than through chemical applications. Also, nutritional improvements developed through biotechnology will have a major impact on future food quality. In an effort to share knowledge and research in this growing area, the UC Davis Seed Biotechnology Center presents two University Extension workshops in March, 2000. Basics of Plant Biotechnology for Business Professionals, held on March 13, explains what biotechnology is and how it is used for crop plant improvement. This workshop gives an overview of the techniques and terminology of plant biotechnology and describes applications in breeding, seed production and new product development. Consumer concerns related to the use of plant biotechnology in agriculture are also discussed. The course is designed primarily for owners, managers, sales representatives and other seed industry personnel who are not directly involved in the science of biotechnology, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about the new methods available for crop improvement.

Course Overview Biotechnology is becoming an increasingly important component of agriculture, medicine, and industry. Our ability to isolate and modify genes and to move them across species barriers for designed purposes is powerful and promising, but is plagued by ethical and practical uncertainties. This course will provide an overview of biotechnology that will explore scientific, economic, and societal issues, with a primary focus on agricultural biotechnology. The course involves active student participation in the form of discussions and brief written and oral presentations. Over the course of the semester, key concepts from molecular genetics and biology that directly impact biotechnology will be introduced. Core techniques and methods of genetic engineering will be described. We will discuss the many diverse factors that influence the development, acceptance, and impact of specific agricultural biotechnology products. These include research, product development and manufacture, patents and intellectual property, government and regulatory issues, effects on agricultural production and marketing systems, ethical concerns, and consumer and public reaction. Guest lectures by visiting experts will provide a first-hand perspective on many aspects of biotechnology. The effects of biotechnology on individuals, societies, and ecosystems will be carefully considered.
