home The General Agriculture Program at D-Q University consists of an Associate of Science Degree in General Agriculture. This program is designed to prepare students for entry level employment and/or for transfer to a four-year college or university. To earn an Associate of Science Degree in General Agriculture, all students are required to complete a set of required courses in General Agriculture (see the following paragraphs for more details), and the graduation requirements of D-Q University.
Associate of Science Degree in General Agriculture
General Agriculture is a two-year program designed to give students a broad understanding of areas without specialization in one area. Persons already employed may upgrade or supplement their skills. The General Agriculture major provides:
  • A pre-service program for students planning to enter the field of agriculture after two years of course work. An in-service program of specific courses for particular job skill improvement for persons currently employed in agriculture and related areas.

    General Information
    Research and Education: Serving Farmers and Students
    The OACC is funded primarily by the Canadian Adaptation and Rural Development program of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Additional funding is provided by the Canadian Wheat Board, the Laidlaw Foundation, and the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. In affiliation with agricultural schools at the universities of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Guelph, McGill, and Laval and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, the OACC coordinates and collaboratively develops research projects and web-based courses in organic agriculture. We also collaborate in research with AAFC researchers across Canada. Currently there are 5 courses available in English and within another year, there will be 9 courses available in English and 5 courses available in French. All courses are accredited for university students and are also available on a non-credit basis for farmers. The OACC website provides research summaries, files of all OACC newspaper articles, links to Canadian organic organizations, virtual farm tours, and many other resources. Traffic on our website has grown to above 2.5 million hits per year from 40,000 different visitors per year.

    Contemporary citizenship in agriculture minor
    This minor assists students in building the knowledge that they need to serve as active citizens in society and to understand the way our agricultural industry, rural areas, and global communities interact now and in the future. The minor focuses on agricultural policy and issues while encompassing ethics, personal development, and societal relationships in order to better understand the correlation between agriculture and rural and urban communities at the local, state, national, and global levels. These topics will encourage the citizenship development needed to sustain and build agriculture in the future and will also enhance understanding of the effects of agriculture on society as a whole. The minor requires the completion of 18 credit hours. The minor requires one foundation course, two ethical and societal relationships courses, and two policy and issues courses. In addition, GENAG 450 Citizenship and Ethics in Agriculture, a capstone course, is to be taken during the junior or senior year of the program of study.
