Research program at University of Maine explores the modern biochemical and biological techniques in medicine, agriculture, forestry, the environment and many areas of industry.
http://www.umaine.edu/biotechnology/
iotechnology is the application of modern biochemical and biological techniques in medicine, agriculture, forestry, the environment, and many areas of industry. Techniques used in biotechnology are numerous but generally involve manipulation of living cells and their molecules to make products or solve problems. Major techniques are genetic engineering, cell culture, protein engineering, monoclonal antibody production, and DNA amplification. Biotechnology will continue to change our lives and society as much as, or more than, any other human discoveries or advances. Since the early 1980s, the University of Maine has invested in educational and research programs in biotechnology. A wide variety of degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels are offered in the fundamental disciplines that are the foundation of biotechnology. Students in these programs can select courses that will prepare them for careers in biotechnology.

Carse of Gowrie Group AGM
Presentation on the Scottish Land Fund
The Annual General Meeting of the Carse of Gowrie Group will be held in the Inchture Hotel on Thursday 25th August at 6:30 pm. This will be followed at 7:30 pm by a presentation on the Scottish Land Fund, followed by refreshments at 8:30 pm.
Please try to come along - you will be made very welcome and your input in setting the Group's aims will be much appreciated. the Group aims to offer a platform for community and business interests in the Carse of Gowrie and will, where appropriate, try to bring together parties that have a common interest.
One area where there is inevitably a common interest is the "Community Right to Buy", created by the Land Reform Act. We have invited the local Case Officer from the Scottish Land Fund to give us a short presentation on what the Scottish Land Fund might do for us; a number of local projects have already received financial support from the Fund.
A flyer setting out the issues that will be covered can be seen by clicking the flyer image below

The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, to create its Fire Weather Index, is measuring rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction at over 40 sites across Nova Scotia. The information can be found at http://gov.ns.ca/natr/protection/wildfire/fwi/default.htm Another factor persons irrigating should be aware of is Days Without Significant Rainfall. After six days without significant rainfall(2.8mm), most crops are receptive to about one inch (25mm) of water . To enhance irrigation, it should be carried at times other than during the heat of the day. (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). For additional information on irrigation see fact sheets listed on the NSDAF web page and available at most Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries offices.

In North America, as in much of the world, humans are reshaping the environment and using up many parts of it faster than nature can renew itself. Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The CEC report on the state of the environment, The North American Mosaic , assembles information so that policymakers and private citizens can decide what steps to take to move more rapidly towards sustainability. It examines the economy and our daily lives to show the risks and the damage we are causing, not just to the environment but to ourselves and to our health. The transition will not be easy. It will require adapting policies, institutions, technologies and lifestyles. It will mean altering deep and enduring attitudes, values and behaviors that underlie our economic and social systems. Here are some of the areas that the report examines in detail. Setting the Stage for Change Natural resources constitute the fundamental basis of any economy. The earth's assets can be viewed as a bank account. The challenge of sustainable development is to find ways of living off nature's interest without depleting the capital. Fishing and forestry are good examples: if we keep harvests within natural regeneration rates, the resource can last indefinitely.
