Environment and Agriculture
The task of the agriculture sector in the Environment DG is to pursue the integration of environmental concerns into the Common Agricultural Policy. The relationship between agriculture and the environment is not static. Agriculture has intensified and intensification in turn has increased pressure on the environment. Other changes include marginalisation and the development of both agri-environment measures and organic farming. The desired relationship between agriculture and the environment can be captured by the term "sustainable agriculture". This calls for management of natural resources in a way which ensures that their benefits are also available for the future. The agriculture sector performs its tasks with a view to the protection, preservation and improvement in the quality of water, air and soil, in the abundance of bio-diversity and in preservation and enrichment of the EU's landscape. If you have comments or questions related to environment and agriculture please send them by e-mail to env-agri@cec.eu.int

Internet consultation on the Soil Thematic Strategy
Introduction Soil is defined as the top layer of the earth’s crust. It is formed by mineral particles, organic matter, water, air and living organisms. Soil is an extremely complex, variable and living medium. Soil- the interface between the earth, the air and the water- is a non-renewable resource performing many functions vital to life: food and other biomass production, storage, filtration and transformation of many substances including water, carbon, nitrogen. Soil has a role as a habitat and gene pool, serves as a platform for human activities, landscape and heritage and acts as a provider of raw materials. These functions are worthy of protection because of their socio-economic as well as environmental importance. Soil is subject to a number of degradation processes or threats in the EU. In an earlier communication “Towards a Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection”, the Commission identified eight threats to soil, namely:

Agriculture With farmers managing almost half of the EU’s land area, the agricultural sector is a major source of pressure on Europe’s environment. Over the past five decades, the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) - accounting for around half of the EU budget - has encouraged the sector to become more and more intensive, as has the growing globalisation of the world’s economy. As a result, the agricultural sector is responsible for a large share of the pollution of surface waters and seas by nutrients, for the loss of biodiversity, and for pesticide residues in groundwater. Reforms of the CAP in the 1990s, and measures taken by the sector itself, have brought about some improvements, but more is needed to balance agricultural production, rural development, and the environment. webmaster@eea.eu.int

Strategic Targets for Agricultural Development And Restructuring of the Countryside
The beginning of the new millenium finds Greek Agriculture, both strategically and tactically, fully prepared for confronting the parameters which will arise as a result of the dynamically ever changing international environment. An environment which at the European level includes the application of the agricultural aspect of Agenda 2000 and at the international level includes the negotiations being carried out at the turning point of the millenium within the framework of the World Trade Organization. It is within this environment that we have shaped our policies which will promote our strategy for the Development of agriculture, the Competitiveness of our products and the Restructuring of the countryside. It is these policies which, based on economic realism, social sensitivity and vision of prospective outcome, will mould new dynamics, which will minimize the inherent shortcomings and structural weaknesses of Greek agriculture and will lead to an increase of agricultural income.
