World Agriculture and the Environment presents a unique assessment of agricultural commodity production and the environmental problems it causes, along with prescriptions for increasing efficiency and reducing damage to natural systems. Drawing on his extensive travel and research in agricultural regions around the world, and employing statistics from a range of authoritative sources including the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the author examines twenty of the world’s major crops, including beef, coffee, corn, rice, rubber, shrimp, sorghum, tea and tobacco. For each crop, he offers comparative information including:
  • a “fast facts” overview section that summarizes key data for the crop
  • main producing and consuming countries
  • main types of production
  • market trend information and market chain analyses
  • major environmental impacts
  • management strategies and best practices
  • key contacts and references
With maps of major commodity production areas worldwide, the book represents the first truly global portrait of agricultural production patterns and environmental impacts.

genetic engineering Among food animals, only engineered fish are under active consideration by U.S. regulators. Other engineered plants, animals, and microbes are farther down the research pipeline but few are poised for introduction in the near future.
To protect human health and the environment from engineered products, we need strong federal oversight and active citizen participation. We urge you to join in our efforts to strengthen U.S. regulation of agricultural biotechnology products. Our current priorities are to:
  • Convince the federal government to establish regulations to protect the food supply and environment from contamination by engineered pharma and industrial crops
Persuade the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct rigorous reviews of ecological risks and require strong resistance-management plans before approving crops producing Bt toxins
Press the federal government to strengthen its oversight of the environmental risks of engineered fish
Urge the Food and Drug Administration to require safety testing and labeling before biotech foods are allowed on the market

Publications library 15 November 2004 - Consultation launched Nitrates Directive Consultation on transposition of the Public Participation Directive and revisions to Nitrate Vulnerable Zones Nitrate levels in many English waters, both ground and surface waters, are increasing. Nitrate pollution is of concern because it has to be removed before water can be supplied to consumers, and it can harm the water environment. Over 70% of nitrate enters water from agricultural land. The following pages provide details of action to reduce agricultural nitrate pollution, which is one aspect of the broader problem of diffuse pollution from agriculture. We are also taking action to reduce similar pollution from other sources. For example, the
