188. Research Themes - Water For Agriculture
Integrated Water Management for agriculture Theme Irrigation in food production, poverty reduction and environmental security.
http://www.iwmi.cgiar.org/agriculture/
Last updated: August 30, 2001 Overview
Integrated Water Management for Agriculture Theme Understanding irrigation in its true context. From field to river basin, looking at the needs of farms, communities, and nature.
This research theme brings together much of the core of the Institute's expertise, knowledge base and research outputs that have been produced over the past five years. Over the coming five years, this research will be deepened - concentrating on the areas of irrigation management, river basin analysis and global-scale strategic analysis of water resources. Under this theme:
  • We are looking at irrigation management from the perspective of the competing uses of water in river basins , including agriculture, nature, local communities, cities, industry, etc. We are adapting and applying modern information technologies and research tools for gaining new insights into irrigation performance at multiple scales (farm, irrigation system, basin). We are working to uncover key insights into the determinants irrigation performance and to provide tools and processes for improved water and irrigation management.

189. Reuse Of Wastewater For Agriculture
Confronting the realities of wastewater use in agriculture. Environmental and human health aspects of wastewater irrigation, Vietnam
http://www.iwmi.cgiar.org/health/wastew/
Reuse of Wastewater for Agriculture In rural and peri-urban areas of most developing countries, the use of sewage and wastewater for irrigation is a common practice. Wastewater is often the only source of water for irrigation in these areas. Even in areas where other water sources exist, small farmers often prefer wastewater because its high nutrient content reduces or even eliminates the need for expensive chemical fertilizers. Concern for human health and the environment are the most important constraints in the reuse of wastewater. While the risks do need to be carefully considered, the importance of this practice for the livelihoods of countless smallholders must also be taken into account. The aim of IWMI research on wastewater irrigation is to maximize the benefits to the poor who depend on the resource while minimizing the risks. Wastewater irrigation provides income for small farmers Many wastewater irrigators are not landowning farmers, but landless people that rent small plots to produce income-generating crops such as vegetables that thrive when watered with nutrient-rich sewage. Across Asia, Africa and Latin America these wastewater micro-economies support countless poor people.

(Photograph of a typical bottomland hardwood forest wetland that dominated much of KY prior to the 1800's. At the state and federal levels, there is interest in preserving and recreating these systems to recover lost wetland functions, such as water quality improvement, habitat, and recreation. The SWBL at UK is investigating how well the replacement, or mitigated wetlands, are performing biogeochemical C, N, and P cycling processes compared to "pristine" bottomland hardwood forest wetlands. This information is necessary to properly identify suitable sites, and monitor, and manage mitigated wetlands so that the "No Net Loss" wetland goal can be achieved. Exciting new results!!! Research Aerobic and anaerobic microbial ecology and diversity in the soil-water-rhizosphere environment Microbial transformations of organic and inorganic pollutants Regulators of microbial processes Bioavailability of pollutants and environmental fate Biogeochemical processes affecting water quality in lakes and constructed/natural wetlands Soil bioremediation Research Justification Expanding agricultural and industrial production have significantly improved the socioeconomic status of many Kentuckians. Associated with some of these activities, however, are impeded soil and water quality that impact the health and quality of life for many citizens and the environment. The essence of Biogeochemistry is to gain an understanding of biological and chemical processes that govern the fate of contaminants in the environment, and to use this knowledge to develop solutions to environmental problems.

Environmental Indicators About Statistics Information by Country
Environmental indicators are powerful tools that serve many purposes, useful as tools for performance evaluation and public information. Together with its member countries, the OECD has established a common approach and framework for developing, measuring and using environmental indicators: the OECD Core Set and its core environmental indicators (CEI); several sets of sectoral environmental indicators (SEI) (e.g. transport , energy); a small set of key environmental indicators (KEI). Current work focuses on material flow analysis and related indicators
What's new OECD Workshop on Material Flows and Related Indicators from 17-Jun-2004 to 18-Jun-2004 This workshop gathered views from OECD member countries on material flows and related measurement tools. It was held in Helsinki, Finland and was attended by more than 50 participants, including national delegates, international experts and observers from industry and environmental NGOs.

    Cemagref's Strategic Project

Welcome and thank you for visiting us on the web! The sustainable management of land and water is the key environmental issue for the future. The complexity of processes at stake requires science excellence for knowledge building and integration. It requires constant adaptation to social demand and scientific challenges. Our strategic direction for the 2004-2008 period focuses on 3 main areas :
    • The development of methods, tools and expertise in environmental science : building of knowledge on environmental systems (favoring medium-scale and integrated approaches).
