Farmers likely to feel economic punch of Katrina
Nebraska farmers will feel economic repercussions of Hurricane Katrina, but perhaps less than some states to the east, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agricultural economist said. "We don't have much information yet but farmers will feel this," said Darrell Mark, an Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources marketing specialist. The short-term impact on Nebraska farmers is expected to be two-fold: higher energy costs and lower cash grain prices. Longer-term impacts depend on several factors, including how long it takes to reopen the lower Mississippi River and New Orleans ports for grain shipments. "This really couldn't have happened at a worse time. Farmers are gearing up for harvest when they'll need fuel for machinery and grain drying, and we are already sitting on a tremendous amount of grain right now," he explained.

A message form The President 2005/6 Ken Horner It is with great pleasure that I accept the Weeton Show Presidency 2005/6. My first memory of Weeton was 1950 when I started showing in the horticultural section, broken by 3 years army service 1953-56 restarting on my return. In the late 1960’s the then chairman Bill Cowling asked me to do collecting ring steward for the show jumping, next year I joined the committee and was in charge of jumping and its sponsorship until they were abandoned. The show moved from Webster’s Kent fields to its new home in the 1980’s. When cattle classes ceased in 1985 I started Goat classes for a few years also hunters with my own fences. Foot and Mouth stopped the show and the next year I brought the Cleveland Bay classes from Harewood and 2 trophies. In 2003 I started 6 crook and stick classes with trophy and part prize money. I am the oldest and longest serving committee member and have seen many come and go. This year after various requests I have organised a dry stone walling highlight to be known as the Presidents Pinfold built by Adrian Walker and sponsored by the Dalesman magazine, a wattle hurdle and pole lathe demo by Geoff Norton and Angela Cole sponsored by Matthew Dalton.
