INTRODUCTION
The Industrial Agricultural Products Center (IAPC) is a multifaceted organization uniquely positioned to bring together multidisciplinary teams, including research faculty from the departments of Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Biological Sciences, Biological Systems Engineering, Business Administration, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Food Science and Technology, and Marketing. Working independently and with clients, these scientists, engineers and business experts strive to solve the technical and business problems inherent in new process, product, and market development. Several laboratories maintained by the Center provide the means to offer a number of capabilities and services to clients. These faculty also teach students to be more aware of environmental and economic issues faced by rural Americans. Our students dedicate themselves to developing the scientific and business skills which will transform our abundant agricultural resources into value-added products. IAPC's director, Dr. Milford Hanna, has faculty appointments in the Biological Systems Engineering and Food Science and Technology departments at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2002, the Biological Systems Engineering Dept. won the Universitywide Departmental Teaching Award for its outstanding record of accomplishment in teaching programs. The benefits of IAPC research are numerous:
  • New markets for Nebraska's agricultural materials give our rural economy renewed health and stability.

Fruit with Potential for Wisconsin Farms
Carandale farm in Oregon, Wisconsin tested 99 cultivars of 34 unique fruit crop species during the 2003-2004 growing seasons. These fruit varieties are being evaluated for horticultural suitability and marketing potential. Several fruit crops are emerging as having high potential for economic and environmental sustainability. The top five promising plants include European Black Currants, Aronia, Fruiting Rose, Gumi and Saskatoon. Read more...
    Overview of Organic Cranberry Production
Organic cranberries are produced across the continent, with over 100 acres grown in Wisconsin. The major problems facing organic cranberry growers include weeds, insect pests, fruit rot and other fruit quality issues; but most significant is a 50% or more reduction in yield compared to conventional production. There is room for the organic cranberry market to expand, yet many growers who have tried it have given up because the price could not make up for the yield loss and costs associated with organic production. Research into improved fertilization techniques and varieties better suited to organic production could overcome the yield drop and improve the economic feasibility of organic production.

    Brussel Sprouts A Summer Sensation
While Brussel sprouts are typically associated with Christmas turkey, stuffing and trimmings in Britain, a new generation of chefs and cooks is taking to the healthy and versatile vegetable with enthusiasm, making it as seasonal as salad, according to the Eastern Daily Press . New early varieties have transformed the market for Brussel sprouts. “Traditionally sprouts were once considered only a winter time food but adventurous chefs have made them a versatile vegetable that is now enjoyed all the year round,” said Tesco sprout buyer Andy Carter. Brussels Sprouts Flower Vendors Contract Flower Planting in Malaysia
The planting of flowers on contract basis is being introduced in Malaysia, with government's approval, as a measure to help to produce more flower growers. According to Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, a huge company in Malaysia has obtained more orders for flowers than it can fill. Through contract planting, the company hopes to obtain supplies from small growers to cater to the demand, the Malaysian news agency Bernama reports. The company will supply seeds and fertilisers to the flower growers and is committed to buy back the flowers produced. The small-scale growers could get returns of at least between RM1,500 to RM2,000 per month for the supply of flowers to fulfil the company's demand, Muhyiddin said.
