3. Internal issues in agricultural education
Internal coherence of the agricultural education system
One of the issues of concern to participants at the round table for Central and Eastern Europe was the creation of a sufficiently flexible and diversified system of technical agricultural education. The system, it was felt, should allow the adaptation of courses to local needs as well as to students' professional career interests. Technical-level agricultural education and training has two major objectives:
  • To train farmers and to develop mid-level manpower for the public and private sectors; and
  • To qualify students for entry to higher agricultural education.
These two objectives, however, can only be reconciled with difficulty. The number of graduates who manage to move up the higher education ladder are few compared to those who come from the general education mainstream. Countries where technical agricultural education is provided in separate colleges or high schools ( French-speaking Africa Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe ) often have weak links and exchanges among institutions resulting in isolation and frequent duplication in basic science teaching. Co-ordination between technical and higher levels of agricultural education is generally very poor.

Supervised Agricultural Experimentation The Agricultural Education Magazine , June 1993, Volume 65 p. 14-15 Agriculture has a rich and fascinating history, yet we seem to ignore the past. There have been many significant historical figures in the evolution and development of American agriculture, but none more significant than Thomas Jefferson. There is little doubt that Jefferson, often recognized as the father of agricultural experimentation, would be fascinated with the development and implementation of agricultural research in the United States today. Some 200 years after Jefferson's life, it is time to get serious about agriscience. Over the past several years a great deal of time and effort have been devoted to developing the concept of incorporating agriscience into agricultural education instructional programs. If this rapidly evolving concept is to become a reality, it must be applied to a broad range of instructional activities. All facets of agricultural education, including, FFA and 4-H, as well as the supervised experience programs and adult education programs, need to broaden in scope to encompass agriscience research activities. Agriculture programs must become actively involved in research in order to be considered viable agriscience programs. Agriscience without research is not science. Furthermore, science instruction must go beyond classroom and laboratory settings. Science is of little value until it is applied. Students must be afforded opportunities to not only learn science concepts in agriculture classrooms and laboratories, they Must also be able to apply scientific principles and concepts in agricultural and environmental settings. James Spiess provided an excellent example of this strategy in the November 1992 issue of The Agricultural Education Magazine with research on bacterial inoculant on alfalfa, resulting in the adoption of the technology by Students and adults in the community.

Agricultural Education
North Carolina State University The Swiss were not willing to change and have suffered the consequences. At one time they dominated the time piece market but today the Japanese are the world leaders. The reason for this is because the Swiss were not willing to change the way they made watches. When they discovered the quartz movement for watches, they rejected the idea. It did not fit into the Swiss paradigm of watch making which said watches must have mainsprings and balance wheels. They didn't even patent their discovery. The Japanese adopted the quartz movement and the rest is history. Over the years, the project method of teaching and its offspring (the supervised farming program, the supervised occupational experience program and now the program of supervised agricultural experience) has served agricultural education well. When the idea was promulgated in 1908 by Rufus Stimson of Massachusetts, it was accepted and adopted in agricultural education and in most other areas of education. Agricultural education was the leader in education reform as the "project" replaced the dry, boring recitation method of that era. But in this era of integrating academic and vocational education and developing critical thinking skills, a new paradigm for Supervised Agricultural Experience must be embraced. If we don't, we may we get left behind in the educational arena like the Swiss were in the watch making arena.

Specialized preprofessional and professional courses are offered for undergraduate and graduate (fifth year) students. Technological, scientific, and broad general education course work for agriculture teaching candidates is offered throughout the College of Agriculture and other Colleges including the College of Education and Integrative Studies. Students with an interest in becoming agriculture teachers are advised to enroll in the agricultural science major and obtain a B.S. degree, or they may complete a B.S. degree in one of the other approved majors in the College of Agriculture. Agricultural Science majors and all students who wish teacher certification are required to show competency in four areas of agriculture. This can be accomplished by completing the subject matter program in agriculture or receiving a passing score on the SSAT in Agriculture.
For students wishing to obtain a Master of Science in Agriculture, such a degree has been approved with an option in Agricultural Science.

    Assistant Professor of Agricultural Education,
    University of Minnesota)
You are aware of the reports regarding the shortages of teachers, especially spot shortages in inner city and rural areas of the United States. There are, indeed, Data from reports reveal that up to 50 to 60 percent of all beginning teachers leave the profession within the first five to six years! Is it really possible that we loose about half, or more, of our agricultural education teachers early in their careers? To explore this more personally, take an inventory of the teachers that started teaching at the same time as you. How many are still teaching? How many have left for other occupations? When and why did they leave teaching? Likely, you found that most of them left during their early years in the profession, a time when more support and assistance may have kept many of them in the profession. Current teachers can have a major influence on beginning teachers’ choices to stay in the teaching profession! Here are some things all of us can do to help keep effective beginning and/or returning teachers in the profession.
