    What is Agricultural Education?
Agricultural Education is one of the most unique programs available to students. Although the topics are agriculture-related, the skills and knowledge learned are valuable to any student. Whether you are college-bound or career-minded, Agricultural Education can give you the tools to be a step ahead of your classmates. Agricultural Education consists of three elements: Organized instruction is classroom instruction. Students are presented content and concepts that are carried out in a laboratory, shop, greenhouse, school farm, the extended classroom or on field trips. Agricultural Education classrooms across Oklahoma are rapidly becoming technology and multi-media driven. Today, students are presented information on both computer and multimedia equipment. PowerPoint lessons, information via the Internet, and live demonstrations displayed in living color are prominent in Ag Ed classrooms. Supervised agricultural experience (SAE) can be described as experiencing life applications. As a part of the agricultural education program, students are encouraged to invest their time and sometimes money into a life application activity that aligns with their interests and career goals. These activities are supervised by the agricultural education instructor. SAEs could include leadership and public speaking, home and/or farmstead improvement projects, horticulture, gardening, livestock production, team competition, poultry production, specialty crop or animal, on-the-job training, agriscience research project, or a number of other interesting areas. Students are encouraged to maintain their SAE while they are enrolled in agricultural education. This will allow them to continually apply the information used in the classroom to improve their SAE.

Agricultural Education is a program for high school and middle school students interested in pursuing careers in natural resources, environmental and agricultural careers. Hundreds of careers are available to students who complete this program. Each local program is designed and conducted to meet specific local needs as identified by that program's advisory committee, and the school administration. These programs include training for careers in agricultural production, processing, mechanization/engineering, communication/education, scientist, marketing/sales, horticulture, forestry, research, and agribusiness. The agricultural education program involves the following components: rigorous classroom instruction (contextual learning), hands-on experience and career exploration (work-based learning), and the FFA (connecting activity). Programs are designed to prepare students to fill community needs, enter post secondary agricultural programs, and develop their personal skills. Over 20% percent of America's work force is employed in some phase of the agricultural industry. Of the 20% involved in agriculture, only 8% are involved in production while 30% are involved in marketing, merchandising, and sales. Twenty-nine percent are scientists, engineers, and related professionals. With the increasing population world wide, greater demands will be made on the food and fiber industry. Career opportunities are abundant for agricultural education students.

Administered and funded by SARE, the Professional Development Program receives annual congressional allocations of about $4.5 million. More Grants for Educators SARE's Professional Development Program funds activities that educate ag professionals in up-to-date strategies and technologies to help farmers and ranchers increase profits and lessen environmental impacts. Funded through competitive grants awarded in SARE's four regions, PDP grants sponsor such activities as running workshops, creating educational manuals and videos, and conducting on-farm tours and demonstrations.
