Social Phobia, Agoraphobia
The two most common phobias are specific phobia and social phobia People with specific phobia experience extreme, disabling, and irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger; the fear leads to avoidance of objects or situations and can cause people to limit their lives unnecessarily. Agoraphobia is a natural response to anxiety and self-preservation. When we feel threatened we tend to retreat to somewhere safe , like a tortoise into its shell. People with social phobia have an overwhelming and disabling fear of scrutiny, embarrassment, or humiliation in social situations, which leads to avoidance of many potentially pleasurable and meaningful activities. Avoidance of situations is not an effective tool in the fight against agoraphobia. But neither are techniques which are used by many psychologists and psychiatrists. These can actually make your anxiety far worse.

Agoraphobia Support
First of all, let's define what Agoraphobia is. It is is NOT a separate condition to other anxiety disorders, it is a symptom of anxiety disorder. Without inappropriate anxiety, Agoraphobia CAN NOT develop. Agoraphobia causes the sufferer to experience high anxiety or panic attacks when they attempt to carry out normal tasks which involves being away from a person or place of safety. Agoraphobia is a FEATURE or symptom of anxiety disorder. I have been providing Agoraphobia support to my clients for over 7 years now and in not one case have the phobic symptoms not been eliminated as the general level of anxiety has been reduced. Commonly, during Agoraphobia support, the client has become more able to leave home and travel unattended very quickly by addressing the root cause of the disorder.
So what is the root cause of the disorder and what support is there for Agoraphobia? The root cause of anxiety disorders no matter how mild or severe, lies in the Amygdala, a small organ in the subconscious brain. This organ is responsible for many emotional decisions icluding the anxiety response. During anxiety disorders, this anxious 'switch' becomes stuck in the ON position causing the sufferer to experience inappropriate high levels of anxiety which may lead to phobias developing. Agoraphobia support...is it necessary?

One-third to one-half of those in community samples who have panic disorder also suffer from Agoraphobia. The typical age of onset is either in late adolescence or the mid-30s. In one study carried out with NIMH sponsorship, 2.8% to 5.7% of the population sample met criteria for agoraphobia, with an additional 1% meeting criteria for panic disorder. Clients with agoraphobia are treated with a combination of relaxation training, physiological feedback and virtual reality graded exposure therapy. Together, the therapist and client work to create a list of situations that become increasingly more anxiety provoking. The client is then exposed to these situations in virtual reality in controlled progressive stages. There are many environments available for those afraid of open spaces, including beaches, grocery stores, plazas, streets and landscapes. The client may exit these virtual worlds at any time if the situation becomes too frightening. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call our front office at

Agoraphobia is a severely debilitating psychological condition that arises from the subconscious. In other words, one does it to himself, unconsciously. I have long observed that the subconscious just loves to scare the dickens out of its owner, and I have created frightening situations quite easily in some experimental subjects. If you have agoraphobia, just imagine you are going outside alone and walking down a busy street and see how you feel. You are frightened, right? Why should you feel fright when you're sitting safely inside your home? Your mind brought out the fear because you used your imagination to put you into a scary situation. We are talking Pavlov, from Psychology 101. You have had one or a series of scary or embarrassing experiences and using your imagination brought the feelings up. Where do the feelings come from? The inner or subconscious mind. You don't reason feeling states. You don't reason yourself to love someone or to be happy because you have lots of money. There are numerous stimuli which tend to cause us to be happy, sad, fearful, nauseated, etc. In the case of agoraphobia the fears simply take over and you give in to the fear and run for safety. All phobias are that way, and agoraphobia is no different. Harder to deal with perhaps, but nevertheless a phobia like fear of spiders, snakes, thunder, airplane rides, and a host of others. The fear can be overpowering. But it is fixable, at least to a considerable extent with minimal therapeutic intervention provided that certain conditions are met.

I am now twenty. I have tried hypnotherapy counseling and psychologists and herbal tablets, but nothing seems to help me. Please, can you help a young, outgoing twenty-year-old who wants to start living! Dear Reader, Agoraphobia is a panic disorder, characterized by intense anxiety about being in places that would be difficult to escape, or where it might be embarrassing to experience symptoms of panic. For example, many people with agoraphobia fear leaving their homes alone, being in a crowd or standing in a line, being on a bridge, or traveling in various vehicles. Sometimes agoraphobia is experienced as a distinct condition, where one fears fainting, being trapped, having diarrhea in a public place, or otherwise feeling helpless and not receiving assistance. More commonly, agoraphobia occurs in people who also experience panic attacks. Panic attacks are intense feelings of fear and often doom, which usually build and peak within about ten minutes of onset. Some of the most typical symptoms include:
  • chest pain and/or heart palpitations
  • trembling
  • feeling faint or dizzy
  • shortness of breath or difficulty catching your breath
  • fear of dying
  • loss of control
  • excessive sweating
  • feeling nauseated
These attacks can be terrifying and physically overwhelming (people experiencing panic attacks often rush to the emergency room convinced that they are having a heart attack). Sometimes the attacks are prompted by a particular experience, and sometimes they are unprovoked. Once a person has had some panic attacks, they may begin to fear having one in public and thus develop an additional panic reaction to these situations, and therefore, agoraphobia.

Definition Panic disorder, one of the anxiety disorders, is characterized by repeated and unexpected attacks of intense fear and anxiety. Panic attacks are usually not related to a particular situation (although attacks in patients with social and specific phobias are usually expected or "cued" to a recognized or specific stimulus) and typically "peak" within ten minutes of their onset. Agoraphobia refers to a fear of being in places where escape might be difficult, or where help might be unavailable in case of a panic attack.

Agoraphobia
What is agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is a Greek word that literally means "fear of the marketplace." This anxiety disorder involves the fear of experiencing a panic attack in a place or situation from which escape may be difficult or embarrassing. The anxiety associated with agoraphobia is so severe that panic attacks are not unusual, and individuals with agoraphobia typically try to avoid the location or cause of their fear. Agoraphobia involves fear of situations such as:
  • being alone outside his/her home being at home alone being in a crowd traveling in a vehicle being in an elevator or on a bridge
People with agoraphobia typically avoid crowded places like streets, crowded stores, churches, and theaters. What are the characteristics of agoraphobia?
Most people with agoraphobia develop the disorder after first suffering a series of one or more panic attacks. The attacks occur randomly and without warning, and make it impossible for a person to predict what situations will trigger the reaction. This unpredictability of the panic causes the person to anticipate future panic attacks and, eventually, fear any situation in which an attack may occur. As a result, they avoid going into any place or situation where previous panic attacks have occurred.

    Constructing Panic
    The Discourse of Agoraphobia
    Lisa Capps, Elinor Ochs
Foreword by Jerome Bruner Meg Logan has not been farther than two miles from home in six years. She has agoraphobia, a debilitating anxiety disorder that entraps its sufferers in the fear of leaving safe havens such as home. Paradoxically, while at this safe haven, agoraphobics spend much of their time ruminating over past panic experiences and imagining similar hypothetical situations. In doing so, they create a narrative that both describes their experience and locks them into it. Constructing Panic offers an unprecedented analysis of one patient's experience of agoraphobia. In this novel interdisciplinary collaboration between a clinical psychologist and a linguist, the authors probe Meg's stories for constructions of emotions, actions, and events. They illustrate how Meg uses grammar and narrative structure to create and recreate emotional experiences that maintain her agoraphobic identity. In this work Capps and Ochs propose a startling new view of agoraphobia as a communicative disorder.

Therapy and the Role of Clinical Diagnostic Criteria
In my own face-to-face and online therapy practice , I do not treat clients as manifestations of mental illnesses in need of medical fixing. No one is merely a case of bipolar disorder , an obsessive-compulsive , or a paranoid schizophrenic . In my view, formal diagnostic categories hold some value in terms of contextual information, but they play a much less important role than the specific personal circumstances of a given client. If you are a client, you are first and foremost a specific, unique individual. Nonetheless, in my experience of working with clients who have received formal psychiatric diagnoses from other mental health professionals, I have often found that clients feel they lack adequate information about what these diagnostic labels actually mean. The entries in this section aim to provide the basic facts about each of several diagnostic labels. Please note that the diagnostic information provided here is for educational purposes only and cannot replace the advice of a qualified mental health professional. Agoraphobia Studies
Could sufferers of agoraphobia learn how to cope with their anxieties using the latest technology in the area of Virtual Reality (VR)? Computer graphic experts are currently able to create believable artificial environments in which people can learn how to overcome their fears, and acquire stable strategies of situational behaviour that would help them to deal with the world of others, in a public space.
The idea is to recreate a believable artificial environment that stimulates physical responses as a real one, but that can be individually controlled by the suffer to experience only the features that can be handled by the patient. As the techniques to cope with the anxiety are learned trough a number of virtual sessions, the richness of the environment is increased to transform the virtual into a real world bringing the patient to be able to cope with the anxieties in the everyday experience. Phobia treatment via virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is one of the emerging and most effective applications of virtual environments. Patients are exposed to anxiety causing stimuli in a fully controllable environment. Furthermore using the responses of people suffering of a conditions such as phobia, who demonstrate clear and measurable behavioural alterations, allows to investigate the effectiveness of virtual environments in triggering the sense of presence, the feeling that one might be actually experiencing a real place rather than a synthetic representation.
