Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is an intense fear about being in public places where you feel escape might be difficult. So you tend to avoid public places, and may not even venture out from home. It can greatly affect your life. Treatment can work well in many cases. Treatment options include cognitive behaviour therapy and medication, usually with an SSRI antidepressant.
What is agoraphobia? Many people think that agoraphobia means a fear of public places and open spaces. But this is just part of it. If you have agoraphobia you tend to have a number of fears of various places and situations. So, for example, you may have a fear of:
  • entering shops, crowds, and public places.
  • travelling in trains, buses, or planes.
  • being on a bridge.
  • being in a lift.
  • being in a cinema, restaurant, etc where there is no easy exit.
  • being anywhere far from your home.
But they all stem from one underlying fear. That is, a fear of being in a place where help will not be available, or where you feel it may be difficult to escape to a safe place (usually to your home). When you are in a feared place you become very anxious and distressed, and have an intense desire to get out. The anxiety usually causes physical symptoms such as: a fast heart rate, palpitations, shaking (tremor), sweating, dry mouth, feeling sick, chest pain, headaches, stomach pains, a 'knot in the stomach', fast breathing. You may even have a panic attack (see separate leaflet called '

Agoraphobia and panic attacks have a serious impact on people's lives. Severe anxiety and avoidance interfere with work, studies, family relationships and social life. Most people who suffer from agoraphobia feel safer at home, and so begin to stay in more and more. They can no longer go out to see friends, go shopping or go to work. They can become very lonely and isolated. The Northern Ireland Agoraphobia and Anxiety Society provides the following services.
  • Advice, information and support on anxiety, agoraphobia and panic attacks.
  • One-to-one counselling support is available by appointment. While there is no fixed fee for counselling, the organisation is charitable and voluntary donations within a person's means are welcomed.
  • Self-help groups are run throughout Northern Ireland where people who experience agoraphobia and anxieties can meet and discuss their problems in a friendly and supportive environment.

This site is a self-help guide for people who have significant trouble with anxiety and phobias.
Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and enjoy your life. You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name, and I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it, and so I'll use it here. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life. For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

INCUBUS LYRICS
"Agoraphobia"

Two people touching lips
Hands on each other's hips
Nothing else in the world but one another
The 42nd floor
On a distant shore
I wonder how we strayed so far from this
Remember when we were
Just flesh and bone. You sir,
May have forgotten how good your world could be So, put down your hollow tips And kiss your lovers lips And know that fate is what you make of it Please end this Before it ends us Ends us I wanna stay inside I wanna stay inside for good I wanna stay inside For good I read the news today And everything they say Just makes me want to stay inside And a better part of me knows That waiting in the throes Is all on par with reading with my eyes closed "What Can I do?", You say It's just another day In the life of Apes with ego trips Put down your hollow tips And kiss your lover's lips And know that fate is what we make of it Please end this Before it ends us Ends us I wanna stay inside I wanna stay inside for good I wanna stay inside For good I'm gonna stay inside I'm gonna stay inside for good I'm gona stay inside For Good I wanna stay inside I wanna stay inside for good I wanna stay inside Don't want to stay inside for good For good [Thanks to imnotdaniel@hotmail.com for these lyrics]

Agoraphobia Carol E. Watkins, M.D. Agoraphobia is the fear of going out into public places. It can occur with or without panic attacks. Individuals with severe agoraphobia should usually start both medication and therapy as soon as possible. Without the medication, such an individual might not be able to make full use of the therapeutic process. People with mild to moderate symptoms might chose a combination approach or therapy alone. Homework between situations, and coaching from family members or therapists help one gradually face the feared situations. Carol E. Watkins, MD

Peace of mind is what we all hope for. In 1966 I founded what was probably the first phobia organisation in the world. The Open Door . Later this became PAX and included panic attacks and other anxiety disorders. From childhood until my mid-twenties I suffered from agoraphobia; not a fear of open spaces as it was generally to be but much nearer to the original definition of the Greek term 'fear of the market place' or place of assembly. In fact it is really a fear of the feeling of fear which manifests itself in a variety of situations. Open spaces, confined spaces, crowds, church, shops, school - anywhere inside or outside where feelings of anxiety arise and there is an overpowering need to escape immediately. We now know that thousands of people experience acute feelings of anxiety escalating to almost unbearable proportions. If these anxiety, or 'panic' attacks keep recurring the sufferer is said to have 'panic disorder' and because they have become a habit of occurring in the same situations this becomes 'classic' agoraphobia. Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia and Isolated Phobias
Panic attacks can occur in the context of several psychiatric conditions. A panic attack is a time-limited intense episode in which the individual experiences feelings of dread accompanied by physical sensations. Panic attacks usually average a couple of minutes but can last as long as 10 minutes and occasionally longer. Some really feel that they are about to die or have a serious medical problem. Children tend to have less insight than adults. Children may also be less articulate in describing their symptoms. Common symptoms include:
  • Chest pain Excessive perspiration Heart palpitations

Introduction: Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia: Agoraphobia is often called "fear of open spaces" but this description is simplistic and misleading. Agoraphobia is like an unreasonable fear or anxiety associated with unfamiliar surroundings or situations, but this description also oversimplifies a complex issue. In some cases, agoraphobia arises associated with panic attacks from panic disorder , and the fear of places or situations occurs when these were the triggers of the panic attacks. In other words, agoraphobia becomes like a "fear of having another panic attack" or a fear of anything or anywhere that might trigger a panic attack. A vicious cycle sets in where anxiety or fear of certain places or situations make a panic attack more likely to occur, which in turn raises the anxiety level. Whatever its description, agoraphobia can be not only emotionally stressing, it can actually become debilitating, leading to a life of self-imposed isolation.

Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia literally means "fear of the marketplace." Now the term has come to mean fear of being out alone away from home. People with agoraphobia are terrified about being in places they associate with anxiety or panic. People with agoraphobia often have another disorder known as panic disorder. Panic attacks are severe spontaneous episodes of anxiety that can make people feel like they are dying, losing control or going crazy. To avoid anxiety and panic attacks, people with agoraphobia usually begin to avoid going far from home by themselves. They may avoid crowds, stores, public transportation or parks. Sometimes people with agoraphobia are able to face situations that make them anxious if someone they trust is with them. People with agoraphobia try to avoid situations that frighten them. Sometimes they are able to force themselves into a situation, even though they are still very uncomfortable. It is often very difficult at first for people with agoraphobia to come to appointments with their doctor or therapist. Some people with agoraphobia will use alcohol or drugs to try to control the anxiety.
