Agoraphobia
Definition
The word agoraphobia is derived from Greek words literally meaning "fear of the marketplace." The term is used to describe an irrational and often disabling fear of being out in public. Description
Agoraphobia is just one type of phobia, or irrational fear. People with phobias feel dread or panic when they face certain objects, situations, or activities. People with agoraphobia frequently also experience panic attacks, but panic attacks, or panic disorder , are not a requirement for a diagnosis of agoraphobia. The defining feature of agoraphobia is anxiety about being in places from which escape might be embarrasing or difficult, or in which help might be unavailable. The person suffering from agoraphobia usually avoids the anxiety-provoking situation and may become totally housebound.
Agoraphobia is the most common type of phobia, and it is estimated to affect between 5-12% of Americans within their lifetime. Agoraphobia is twice as common in women as in men and usually strikes between the ages of 15-35. The symptoms of the panic attacks which may accompany agoraphobia vary from person to person, and may include trembling, sweating, heart

Overcoming Agoraphobia
The true meaning of agoraphobia is fear of crowds, but for many people it is much more than that.
Effective agoraphobia treatment
Overcoming Agoraphobia retrains the brain to understand that these situations are actually safe, and that it does not need to generate anxiety responses. Although medication is often prescribed as agoraphobia treatment, detraumatisation and relaxation is what is required.
Hypnosis is so effective for doing this because it keeps the mind calm and relaxed while reviewing the difficult situations or experiences, so teaching the mind to respond differently.
As this happens, you will begin to feel differently about the prospect of situations that used to be frightening, until actually going back into them is a realistic prospect.

Agoraphobia
How Phobias Work The Cure Other Treatments Tools "Agoraphobia is related to fear of developing panic-like symptoms (e.g., dizziness or diarrhea)."
- Phillip W. Long, M.D. (Internet Mental Health) The word "agoraphobia" originally meant "fear of the open marketplace" and meant fear of open spaces. Now it's usually used as a term to describe the fear of going into unfamiliar territory. Agoraphobics have had panic attacks before and are afraid of having a panic attack away from home or away from someone they feel safe with. Agoraphobics might describe their symptoms as panic, panic attacks, anxiety, nervousness, fear, spells, rapid heartbeat, hyperventilation, fear of death, fear of going crazy or the fear of fear itself. Agoraphobics experience anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult. They are afraid panic-like symptoms might occur. Agoraphobic fears could include being outside the home; being in a crowd; being on a bridge; and traveling. Agoraphobia usually causes people to avoid these situations or have someone accompany them - sometimes causing serious interruptions and inconveniences and often leading to feelings of low self-worth. Agoraphobics often have a lifestyle which is severely limited by their condition.

I received a phone call last night from a lady with Agoraphobia ("Marie") whom I had never met. I drove 20 miles to her VERY rural home this morning to see if I could help. Nice lady. She answered the door with her toddler grandson ("Johnny") at her side.
Marie had agoraphobia for at least 25 years. She can go outside her home but rarely goes beyond 50 yards without feeling intense body heat, panic and other fear responses. She refers to it as "my illness." The first order of business is always establishing rapport. We had done a fairly good job on the phone the night before and, since I knew she had great concerns for Johnny, I immediately turned my attention toward him. I got down on one knee (at his physical level) and, in a form of child talk (his style of language), asked him how old he was. He warmed up right away and informed me that he was practicing to be a bell. I said "ding-dong" as he moved his head back and forth. Rapport is easy if we are flexible and genuinely care. Marie loved it. That's important. It establishes trust and opens one up to these belief-violating procedures. The subtle energies that circulate throughout the body have been largely ignored (until recently) by western scientists. As a result, our use of them for emotional and spiritual healing has been sparse at best. With EFT, however, we consider these subtle energies to be the front running cause of emotional upsets. As a result, we generate results that are FAR beyond those of conventional methods. Even a cursory review of the case histories on this web site will reveal that.

People who don't suffer from agoraphobia find it almost impossible to imagine what goes through the mind of somebody suffering from this illness. Each person's individual experience during an attack may differ, but generally speaking, an attack is very real and can be quite terrifying. I developed agoraphobia in mid 1996, after an incident changed my life completely. Before this incident, I was able to live my life to the fullest, with no restrictions. Here is my story. For the past 10 years, I have been a secretary, and have worked in many high rise buildings. Then one morning in January 1996, I was in an elevator inside my building which malfunctioned. At the time I was working on the 25th floor of my building, but this was to be a morning which would alter the rest of my life. I got into the elevator from the ground floor and pressed the button to take me to the 25th floor. Everything seemed quite normal, until the elevator continued past the 25th floor without stopping until it got to the top floor. When it reached the top, it halted and the doors remained shut. At this time, I wasn't panicked too much, and simply pressed the button for the 25th floor again and picked up the emergency telephone to report that I was stuck in the elevator.

YAYYYY First baby step on the road to recovery!!!!
I hate hospitals. Michael was taken to the ER the other night. He had elevated med levels and has been in since Tuesday. I keep thinking what if something goes wrong with him, what am I gonna do? Had to walk up to the smoke shop today and ask one of the kids to walk with me. The smoke shop is across the street but I had to go all the way up to the corner so that I didn't have to cross in the middle of the street. I am kinda paranoid about that. I always ask myself what if a car comes racing into the sucide lane ad hits me. But I hate not being able to walk down the street alone. I can't wait for Michael to come home. It has been one busy week. I almost have had panic attacks but the Zoloft seems to be helping me with it. Still, I do have insomnia and find it hard to get to sleep without Michael here.

Agoraphobia is characterized by anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event of having an unexpected or situationally predisposed Panic Attack or panic-like symptoms. Agoraphobic fears typically involve characteristic clusters of situations that include being outside the home alone; being in a crowd or standing in a line; being on a bridge; and traveling in a bus, train, or automobile. The situations are avoided (e.g., travel is restricted) or else are endured with marked distress or with anxiety about having a

Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is a form of anxiety disorder . The word is an English adoption of the Greek words agora phobia public spaces where help in an emergency might not be readily available. Many people suffering from agoraphobia, however, are not afraid of the open spaces themselves, but of situations often associated with these spaces, such as social gatherings. Others are comfortable seeing visitors, but only in a defined space they feel in control of. Such a person may live for years without leaving his home, while happily seeing visitors and working, as long as they can stay within their safety zone. An agoraphobic experiences severe panic attacks during situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone. During severe bouts of anxiety, the agoraphobic is confined not only to their home, but to one or two rooms and they may even become bedbound until their over-stimulated nervous system can quiet down, and their
