...and other anxiety related challenges
Well, now that you've made your way to the Agoraphobia Web Page, I suppose you just might like to know what that funny-sounding name means. There are many technical definitions with all kinds of slants. For practical purposes, I'll just give you a brief definition given to me by a counselor I once worked with. According to her, agoraphobia is an anxiety condition wherein the one challenged with it suffers extreme anxiety, or even terror , when subjected to any situation which is outside of his or her "safety zone." The focus of this site is a practical one, one which explains in everyday terms what it's like to be phobic (shortened word for agoraphobic), written by a person who's been phobic for about 37 years now. advertisement
To be sure, like most life situations, being phobic has its upsides and its downsides. I hope to give you a smattering of it all, as told by those of us who know the challenge first-hand. Luci, a good friend of mine and sister phobic, will also be contributing her input throughout this site. I hope you find it interesting, as well as informative.

WHAT IS A PANIC ATTACK? A panic attack is a sudden rush of uncomfortable physical symptoms coupled with thoughts of impending doom (making a scene, heart attack, not being able to breathe). Although the first panic attack may take place in a distinct situation, further episodes are unpredictable as to time or place. One or more uncomfortable physical symptoms will be present in a severe form during an actual panic attack, such as increased heart rate, dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, inability to concentrate, and confusion. After a number of panic episodes, the individual can become afraid of being a helpless victim of panic. He or she may hesitate to be alone, to venture far from home, or to be in public places. Even when not experiencing an anxiety attack, the person with panic attacks often becomes increasingly nervous and apprehensive. He or she attempts to remain physically and psychologically tense in preparation for the next attack.

What is panic disorder?
Panic disorder is a common condition in which a person has episodes of intense fear or anxiety that occur suddenly (often without warning). These episodescalled panic attackscan last from minutes to hours. They may occur only once in a while, or they may occur quite frequently. The cause, or "trigger," for these attacks may not be obvious. Return to top
What happens during a panic attack?
Panic attacks are associated with physical symptoms that include the following:
  • Shaking
  • Feeling that your heart is pounding or racing
  • Sweating
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling that you are choking
  • Nausea
  • Cramping
  • Dizziness
  • Out-of-body feeling
  • Tingling or numb feeling in your hands
  • Chills or hot flashes
A person may also have an extreme fear of losing control, going crazy or dying during a panic attack. It is very rare for a person to have all of these symptoms at once. However, the presence of at least 4 symptoms strongly suggests that a person has panic disorder.

What is Agoraphobia?
Defined as "open spaces, leaving a safe place, or crowded public places", each year this surprisingly common phobia causes countless people needless distress. To add insult to an already distressing condition, most agoraphobia therapies take months or years and sometimes even require the patient to be exposed repeatedly to their fear. We believe that not only is this totally unnecessary, it will often make the condition worse. And it is particularly cruel as agoraphobia can be eliminated with the right methods and just 24 hours of commitment by the phobic individual. Known by a number of names - Agorophobia, Fear of Open Spaces, Fear of Leaving A Safe Place, and Fear of Crowded Public Places

Social phobia: what it is and what it is not.
SONGS OF MY SOUL
Available as a book or eBook, SONGS OF MY SOUL is the poetry of a Canadian teenager, from Streetsville, Ontario who took her own life, in November 1991, after struggling with social phobia, panic disorder and agoraphobia for the previous ten years. While victims of anxiety disorders have found SONGS OF MY SOUL to be an excellent resource for communicating the impact of their own fear, anxiety and panic to family and friends, young people - with and without anxiety disorders - relate strongly to the book. The words come from the soul of an adolescent whose social anxiety prevented her from communicating with her peers during her lifetime. Since the posthumous publication of her poetry, her work has touched the hearts and souls of young and old alike. KIRSTIN'S STORY: no place to stand began as a therapeutic exercise for Kirstin's mother after her death. She wrote the earlier chapters then, but put it away for several years because the later ones were too hard to write. Eventually, finding that parents of children with anxiety disorders were still having difficulty in getting school personnel to understand the problem, she finished writing the book, hoping that people with responsibility in the welfare of children – whether as parent, teacher, doctor, nurse, social worker – would read it… at least once.
