The Sociology of Health and Aging
With faculty from FSU's Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, Center for Demography and Population Health, and Department of Sociology
Co-founded by R. Jay Turner and Jill Quadagno
Our new program allows concentration in one of two related areas or a study plan that draws significantly from both. The Sociology of Mental Health and Substance Use Problems considers the social distributions of psychological distress and disorder, substance abuse, and deviant behavior. It focuses on potentially modifiable social factors relevant to these outcomes. Courses and research mentoring include consideration of stage of life variations in the role and significance of social statuses, social processes and both adverse and confirming life experiences. Much of the training falls within the domain of social epidemiology. This program aims to produce scholars/ researchers capable of contributing to prevention science by identifying risk and protective factors, and variations in such factors, across gender, age and ethnicity, which represent promising targets for prevention or intervention efforts. Consistent with this objective, much of the methodological training falls within the domain of social epidemiology. Qualitative approaches are also emphasized and specific training is offered.

    Introduction:
This concentration currently encompasses issues of health and health service delivery in comparative frameworks within the Asian-Pacific basin. Research and teaching involve the study of the structure and changes in the social organization of health care professions and institutions; the interaction between professionals and their clients; the social and cultural barriers in communication and services/treatment; the adaptation to trauma, health problems, and aging; technological changes and other social arrangements and stresses in the etiology of health problems; and needs assessment and program evaluation in health interventions. Faculty are active at international, national, regional, and local/-institutional levels. Faculty with graduate students have been engaged in work on the health needs of native Hawaiians, on research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health on "Victims of Rape, Stress, Coping, and Social Support," on research and training grants for health services in the Philippines, Micronesia, and Samoa, on gender and ethnicity in psychiatric diagnosis, on turnover of nurses and public health nurses in Hawai`i, on research on care programs for the frail elderly and family care giving for the chronically ill and the elderly, and on the impact of changes in types of health care coverage of needy populations.

COURSE OVERVIEW Dr. Bill J. Lutes, Chairperson Sociology is the scientific study of human interaction and society. Understanding how societies work, what is their diverse organization and how they change is the goal of the discipline. It includes the study of institutions such as family, welfare, work, education, and social work. Also prominent in Sociology is the study of the problems facing society such as crime, poverty, juvenile delinquency, aging and minority group relations. It is unique among the social sciences because it is not limited in focus to a single institution but emphasizes the relations among all parts of society. The undergraduate major in Sociology is valuable training for a variety of occupations. Many Sociology majors go on to fascinating careers in diverse jobs that are emerging with our changing society. Our recent graduates have become a Pension Counselor, Family Life Counselor, Hospital Social Worker, Probation Counselor, Retail Sales Manager, Insurance Agent, and Department Store Buyer. A deep understanding of the dynamics of social behavior is useful in virtually any occupation where people assist other people with serious concerns in their lives. In addition to the preparation of students for the world of work, Sociology is an excellent major to prepare for graduate and professional degrees in social work, public administration, health care administration, personnel management, city planning, and law. Few other majors prepare a student for such a broad range of post graduate choices. At the very least, Sociology prepares students for life, no matter what one's choice of occupation.

Gerontological Studies
Interdisciplinary Program The gerontological studies program is a multi-disciplinary program designed to integrate research and theory about aging and old age. Prompted in part by the graying of the world's population, humanists, scientists, social scientists, and professionals have become interested in understanding the position of the aged in society, the aging process in various contexts, the meaning of aging to individuals, and the physical changes that accompany aging. The program draws on the most recent thinking and research in a variety of disciplines to provide students with a background that will be helpful after graduation both in work and in graduate or professional school.
In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the program, the core courses are drawn from four departments: anthropology, communication sciences, history, and sociology. Students may choose from a variety of courses according to their own interests. Most of the electives are not specifically gerontology courses but cover topics that contribute to the understanding of aging and the aged. The perspectives gained in the core courses will provide the student with the background needed to relate the material in the more general courses to gerontological issues. The program is firmly grounded in the liberal arts and thus provides the student with the challenge to think and communicate effectively and to integrate diverse information, theories, and practice.

About the Graduate Program
The Department of Sociology was established in 1966. The Department now ranks as the fifth largest Sociology department in Canada and the third largest in Ontario. The MA program in Sociology dates from the beginning of the Department, while a limited PhD program was started in 1978. As of 1990, the PhD program was expanded to a general program with three areas of strength. Especially at the Ph.D. level, the Department advertises three main substantive areas: social demography, social class and change, and health and aging. Students may choose to work in other areas, providing there are enough faculty members to constitute an examination committee. Social Demography is defined to include both substantive and technical aspects of the study of population. The substantive component includes both Canadian and international content, with the latter involving mostly the Third World. More specifically, faculty and students have ongoing research in the following areas: fertility and family planning, mortality and health, international and internal migration, population composition by such factors as minority status and language, population growth and aging, population and development, historical demography, and demography of marriage and the family. The demography area of specialization is also supported by the Population Studies Centre Social Class and Social Change represent the core of the classical tradition of Sociology. For many years, the study of issues related to social class has tended to be relegated to the sub-field known as social stratification. More recently, sociology has refocused attention on the central role of social class in a wide range of contexts. Among a growing number of sociologists, class no longer plays the role of a standard variable to be routinely included in empirical analysis. Instead, relations among classes are viewed as forming a central dynamic in social change. The focus at Western is on historical and quantitative analyses. The area also includes a strong theoretical component.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology
    Concentrating in Criminology
Criminology focuses on the nature and causes of crime. A sociology major with a concentration in criminology prepares students for careers in law, law enforcement, probation, corrections, youth counseling, substance abuse counseling or other areas related to criminal justice and human services. This is not a degree in criminal justice, which is an applied field of study that is more focused on the criminal justice system itself. The BA in sociology with a concentration in criminology is more theoretically-oriented and can enhance prospects for long-term career advancement more readily than applied training can. Completion of requirements for the concentration in criminology is certified on graduation transcripts.
Requirements for the Major in Sociology with a Concentration in Criminology
In addition to the college’s General Education and foreign language requirements for the BA degree (consult college catalog for an explanation of each), a total of 36 credit hours in sociology are required for the major in sociology with a concentration in criminology.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Sociology is the study of human society and social behavior. Its subject matter is diverse and varied, ranging from the study of groups as small as a family to those as large as a corporation or mob. More specifically, sociology studies various aspects of society, including crime, religion, race, gender, aging and medicine. Sociology is a popular major for students planning careers in areas such as government, education, social service, criminal justice, research, aging services and many more. Many sociology majors go to graduate school in areas such as law, psychology, public administration, social work and business, in addition to advanced study in sociology. Major: 39 hours in Sociology consisting of SO 101, 230, 231, 335, 390, 397, 495 and 499. Demonstrate competence through two semesters (6 hours) of the same foreign language at the college level. In addition, all students majoring in sociology must choose one of the following areas of emphasis:

S331 SOCIOLOGY OF AGING I will next teach S331 in Spring, 2001. The prerequisite is S163, and the course is recommended for sociology majors as well as for nonmajors. There are two midterms and a final as well as a term paper. In 1864 Robert Browning wrote in a poem called Rabbi Ben Ezra: "Grow old along with me! The Best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made: Our times are in His hand Who saith 'A whole I planned, Youth shows but half; trust God: see all nor be afraid.'" Have you noticed an increase in the numbers of 100th birthdays noted on TV news shows and in newspapers? The number of Americans living 100 years and beyond is steadily rising. Although the human life span (the highest number of years any member of the species has been known to survive) was believed to be 120 years, there are recorded examples of persons who lived significantly longer. In fact, some scientists now believe that the gap between life expectancy (the average number of years members of a population can expect to live) and human life span will decline substantially in the next few decades in that it will become increasingly common to live 120 years. Further, scientists are rapidly discovering genes responsible for many chronic illnesses that become more prevalent with age. If most Americans could live 120 years free of diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's and the like, what impact would this have on society, families and individuals? Would the media continue to refer to persons 50 and over as "old"? If so, many would be "old" for almost 60% of their lives. Would people continue to retire at 65 or even earlier? What impact would there be on age at marriage, divorce rates and rates of childbearing? Would stages of individual, family and occupational life change? If so, how?
