Library Assignment - Cross-Cultural Aging MLA Style Manual Prescott College, The Library. This site provides a quick reference for Modern Language Association (MLA) style for documenting sources. http://library.prescott.edu/mla.html The welfare and care of aging individuals is an issue worldwide. Attitudes toward, and treatment of, older adults differs throughout the world depending upon many factors: historic, economic, geographic, and cultural. Use the Coastline Virtual Library ( http://library.ccc.cccd.edu ) to find and review a minimum of five (5) articles that provide information about attitudes and treatment of older adults in at least two different countries/cultures. Articles may include information about the health status of elders in these countries or cultures. You may use the following suggested approaches to beginning your search. In the searches suggested below, you will notice that different search terms are used for each resource. That is because a librarian did not create the indexes and topic designations; each vendor has organized the entries according to its assumptions about the database’s users.

S OCIAL G ERONTOLOGY THE A GING R EVOLUTION
It is the meaning that men attribute to their life, it is their entire system of values that define the meaning and value of old age. The reverse applies: by the way in which a society behaves toward its old people it uncovers the naked, and often carefully hidden, truth about its real principles and aims. Simone de Beauvoir, The Coming of Age If we were able to bring someone from Shakespeare's time and deposit them onto a beach in contemporary Orlando, perhaps what would be the most striking to this individual would not be the 747 overhead but rather the large number of older individuals. Click here to see: Generations now alive are among the first in history to be raised with the expectation of old age, forerunners of a longevity revolution that will be felt for centuries to come. Some twenty percentage of all humans who have ever lived past the age of 65 are now alive. So profound is this demographic revolution that every aspect of social life and society is affected. A late 1980s Census Bureau study noted that "rapidly expanding numbers of older people represents a social phenomenon without historical precedent...[that] has various economic implications for individuals, families, public policy-makers." Those now old420 million world-wide as of 2001are literally pioneers of a new stage of the lifespan and the life course they're trailblazing will determinein partour own passages through time. HOME SOCIOLOGY IN THE NEWS AUTHOR'S MESSAGE Sociologically, aging is defined as the combination of biological, psychological, and social processes that affect people as they grow older. The population in the United States and other industrialized countries is graying. In this chapter, you will learn social gerontology and other sociological theories of aging. Some of the special challenges and problems that the elderly face will be examined. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the impact of globalization and the graying of the world population on the treatment of elderly throughout the world. The Graying of U.S. Society "Graying" happens when societies experience an increase in the proportion of the population becoming elderly. It is the result of two long-term demographic trends in industrialized countries:
  • Lower fertility rates (the tendency of families to have fewer children) Lower mortality rates and longer life expectancy
The populations in the United States and other industrialized countries are graying.

Demographic, economic, and social trends associated with aging populations are continuously converging with profound consequences.
This course will examine these processes of aging as they affect individuals, families, and societies. Students will learn that aging and the life course in our globalizing world can only be understood from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective.
As we explore the dynamic interactions between people and their environments, we will ask ourselves a range of sociological questions, including: How do early life experiences and socialization processes influence how we grow old? What impact does social policy have on individual lives? In what ways are cultural norms and values reflected in the aging experience? What roles are available for older individuals in society? We reflect on these topics to gain a better understanding of the culture-specific as well as the universal aspects of growing older in a modern, interconnected world.

Sociology W elcome to the Department of Sociology at the Maxwell school of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Sociology at Syracuse includes an exciting group of scholars interested in inequality studies, qualitative and quantitative methods, health, aging, and social policy, and feminist thought. Students are encouraged to work with faculty members not just in the sociology department, but throughout the University. Many students have taken courses in African American Studies, Education, Women's Studies, Anthropology, and Public Administration in the past. Undergraduates majoring in Sociology can expect to gain a broad understanding of how societies (and American society in particular) operate, and more in-depth understanding of particular institutions, (e.g., health care, labor and industry, popular culture), and issues (e.g., environment, sex and gender, racism, globalization). This knowledge provides a useful background for students pursuing a wide range of careers including social services, marketing and retail, personnel, education and law. Graduate training is organized around the major areas of Qualitative Methods and Feminist Methods, Inequality Studies, and Health, Aging and Social Policy. Our aim is to prepare students for all aspects of their career: research, teaching, publishing, grants, and mentoring. We begin with professional development seminar that assures that all students have the opportunities they need to become fully prepared future scholars.

INTRODUCTION Sociology is the systematic and scientific study of society and social behavior. The sociologist looks beyond individual and unique events to the predictable broad patterns and regular occurrences of social life that influence individuals. Studies range from the profound impact of post-industrial societies on family life, crime, mass communications, gender, race, ethnicity, and intergenerational relations to the study of emotions and the values that govern daily social encounters. The sociology major is designed to provide undergraduate preparation leading to careers in social work, politics, law, public administration, urban and environmental planning, public relations, personnel, criminal justice, counseling and other service professions. The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology will also prepare a student for advanced studies in several areas including sociology, social work, environmental studies, education, public health and urban planning.
