Mirapex Parkinson's Drug Shows Promise
If you think the scientific community is in a slumber when it comes to discovering new treatments for Parkinson's disease ... think again. Yes, there's still " a whole lotta shak'in go'in on ", but this time it's in the laboratory. Progress has been made. A major breakthrough in treatment is about to be announced. Data from two studies on Parkinson's Disease is being released at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) meeting this week in Toronto, Canada. Parkinson’s Disease affects approximately 1% of people over age 60 (one million people in the United States), causing tremor, muscle rigidity, slowed motion, and loss of facial expression. All of these effects worsen over time.
The two, three-year studies were conducted to determine the long-term safety and effectiveness of the drug called pramipexole in the treatment of Parkinson's patients. The studies showed that more than 50% of the patient population successfully controlled symptoms, such as tremors and rigidity, with Mirapex (pramipexole dyhydrochloride tablets) without the use of levodopa (a traditional treatment). This is good news because, although levodopa is very effective initially, over time most patients must increase their dosage to maintain control of their symptoms.

43% OF BABY BOOMERS WOULD RATHER DIE IN 10 YEARS THAN TO ADOPT A STRICT DIET
New Survey By The Alliance for Aging Research Explores Boomer Attitudes and Frustration Towards Good Nutrition (Washington, DC)
- In a new survey released today by the Alliance For Aging Research on Baby Boomer attitudes toward aging and nutrition, a startling 43 percent of Boomers claim they would rather eat what they want and live just 10 more years, suggesting a level of frustration when it comes to managing their own health. The survey, " A New Age of Aging - A Study of Baby Boomer Behaviors on Growing Older ," shows that while they express anxiety about aging, America's 75 million Baby Boomers as a group are only taking baby steps to good health. The survey uncovered a disconnect between the knowledge Baby Boomers have about responsible nutrition and the actions they actually take towards good health. Half of them confess they aren't eating as well as they should, and one in three say they will act to alter their diets if diagnosed with a disease. Members of America's largest generation who are between ages 38 and 56 are uneasy about aging because they fear losing attractiveness and contracting a debilitating disease; but there also seems to be a level of frustration and ultimate surrender towards applying appropriate dietary behavior and achieving results. There is a lack of confidence in managing one's own health, which leads to a lack of commitment to good nutrition as one ages.

The Federal Government's Current Efforts in Aging and Nutrition Research before the
Senate Special Committee on Aging August 15, 2002
Thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today representing the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Division of Nutrition Research Coordination (DNRC). The DNRC is administratively located within the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), NIH. Prior to my current position, I was the Director, Office of Nutrition, National Institute on Aging (NIA), NIH. This testimony includes a brief overview of the federal government's current efforts in aging and nutrition research. These efforts include research on caloric restriction, diet and physical activity and recent research activities in dietary supplementation with regard to aging and nutrition. Today, approximately 13 percent of Americans are over age 65. By the year 2030, the number of individuals age 65 and older will likely double–reaching 70.3 million or 20 percent of the total population. Of great concern is the explosive increase in numbers anticipated among those most at risk of disease and disability–people age 85 and older. Their ranks are expected to grow from 4.3 million in 2000 to at least 19.4 million in 2050.

Tips for Healthy Eating While Eating Out
While fast food restaurants may not offer the healthiest options, most people find themselves eating fast food from time to time. How can you make the most of your fast food meal? For that matter, how can you make the most of any restaurant meal? The good news is that many restaurants, fast food and sit-down, are adding healthier menu options. It is now possible to eat a fairly nutritious meal on the go. Keep in mind portion control (no super sizing), high fat and calorie sauces and dressings (eliminate them or take them on the side and use sparingly), and sodas (drink water or low fat milk). Making good choices when you are eating out will help you maintain a healthy diet. Knowing what types of menu items are healthier than others can help limit temptation and will also help you encourage your children and grandchildren to make healthy choices as well.
What are some healthy fast food choices?

San Francisco A seminar presented at an anti-aging symposium suggests that when it comes to proper nutrition and how it impacts health and longevity, so-called advanced cultures have much to learn from ancient and what might be viewed as less-advanced civilizations of today. Moreover, applying these lessons in proper diet can hasten and enhance surgical results for patients in the post-operative phase.
The symposium was sponsored by the Educational Foundation of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
