Effect of Aging on Nutrition
Aging produces physiologic changes that affect the need for several essential nutrients. While the impact of age-related alterations in physiology and metabolism has been extensively assessed in pharmacological studies, it has only been within the last two decades that much research has been conducted to define the impact of these changes on human nutritional requirements. The nutrition status of the elderly is also dependent on social conditions and is influenced by the long-term effects of chronic disease and the intake of medication, which can sometimes generate undesired interactions with nutrients.
The physiologic changes of aging, including perceptual, endocrine, gastrointestinal, renal, and muscular changes, may affect nutrition needs.
  • Energy needs decrease with age as the result of changes in basal metabolism and physical activity. Basal need are not under the individual's control, but energy expenditure in physical exercise varies according to individual activity patterns. Physical activity can play a major role in maintaining energy balance.
  • Sensory impairments that occur with aging may result in consumption of a more monotonous diet. Taste and smeell dysfunction in older adults reveal a progressive decline with age.

    The Secrets of Youthful Aging
    Is it possible to control the effects of aging, or are wrinkles, physical frailty and mental deterioration inevitably programmed into our later years? You will hear strong and emotional arguments on both sides of this question, but the truth is neither side can definitively prove their point. Therefore you have to choose what you believe and what, if anything you will do about it. We, at the center for anti-aging are optimists, and we base our optimism on a growing pool of scientific evidence which shows that quality of life can be greatly influenced as we age. How do you sort through all of the hoopla and find a practical way to incorporate the activities and supplements that will make a difference? It is difficult. If you believed all of the hype, you would spend your time and your money taking hundreds of pills, elixirs and potions that would give health to everything from your brain to your knee joint. We do not pretend to have all of the answers, but we do have a scientific approach to programs that are individualized, practical and will make a difference. In the near future we will deal with each of the following subjects: Human Growth Hormone Antioxidants Theories of aging

    3. Nutritional Status
    Functional Limitations
    In the current study, seniors were assessed when referred for HDMs on their present need for assistance in eating an "Activity of Daily Living" and for assistance in shopping and in preparing or cooking meals two nutritionally related "Instrumental Activities of Daily Living." A four-point assessment was used for each activity:
    • Total able to do;
      Needs some assistance;
      Needs maximal assistance; or,
      Unwilling to perform.
    In all, 95 percent of the 141 HDM clients in the study were identified as limited in one-or-more of the three nutritional activities when referred to participating county programs. Typically, they were limited in their ability and needed help both to prepare/cook meals and to shop, but did not need assistance with eating. Seniors needing help in eating require more assistance than provided by local HDM programs. However, HDM services may provide support when family members or other informal caregivers provide assistance with eating, or may be included as part of a package of services with personal care or other in-home support services available under other local office for the aging programs.

    Testimony on Aging and Nutrition
    Pamela Starke-Reed
    Deputy Director, Division of Nutrition Research Coordination
    NIDDK
    August 15, 2002 Thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today representing the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Division of Nutrition Research Coordination (DNRC). The DNRC is administratively located within the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), NIH. Prior to my current position, I was the Director, Office of Nutrition, National Institute on Aging (NIA), NIH. This testimony includes a brief overview of the federal government's current efforts in aging and nutrition research. These efforts include research on caloric restriction, diet and physical activity and recent research activities in dietary supplementation with regard to aging and nutrition. Today, approximately 13 percent of Americans are over age 65 . By the year 2030, the number of individuals age 65 and older will likely double–reaching 70.3 million or 20 percent of the total population
