Many of these maps reflect the European Age of Discoveries, dating from the late 15th century to the 17th century when Europeans were concerned primarily with determining the outline of the continents as they explored and mapped the coastal areas and the major waterways. Also included are 18th and 19th century maps documenting the exploration and mapping of the interior parts of the continents, reflecting the work of Lewis and Clark and subsequent government explorers and surveyors. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

About
European Voyages of Exploration
During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries two nations, Portugal and Spain, pioneered the European discovery of sea routes that were the first channels of interaction between all of the world's continents, thus beginning the process of globalisation in which we all live today.

AC2005: Prospects for AI panel Posted by mmealling on Saturday, September 17, 2005 - 06:17 PM (4 Reads) Topic Thoughts This is a panel on the Prospects for AI. Panel members are Neil Jacobstein, Patrick Lincoln, Peter Norvig, and Bruno Olshausen. First up is Neil Jacobstein talking about the current state of AI and what's real and what isn't. In general the terms have changed though: In other words, if it works, then it isn't "AI". AI has become a real aspect of IT in a much more incremental and 'stealth' way rather than the old hyped announcements of super-brain computers that can out think humans. Now he's reviewing the knowledge, systems, business and cultural issues still to be solved. To many to blog well, though. He's covering stuff from the Semantic Web to nanotech and reverse brain engineering. So this is really a review instead of something really new.

'Good God. When I consider the melancholy fate of so many of botany's votaries, I am tempted to ask whether men are in their right mind who so desperately risk life and everything else through the love of collecting' plants.' The Golden Age of Botany
A time of great adventure and discovery couched in the Age of Reason, a time when Botany was merely a branch of medicine and practiced almost exclusively by doctors and surgeons, and a time when the world was opening up to the concept of scientific discovery. The defining individual of the 'Golden Age of Botany' would have to be Carl Linnaeus , but there were many who worked on theories that would later influence Linnaeus in developing his system of classification.

Sir Samuel White Baker

Sir Richard Francis Burton
Mary Henrietta Kingsley Mungo Park Sir Samuel White Baker Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), was an English explorer of Africa. He became known as an expert on Egypt and Sudan chiefly through his two books, The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile (1866) and The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia (1867). He also wrote popular books on hunting and nature. Baker was born in London. During the late 1850's and early 1860's, he and Florence von Sass, whom he later married, explored the region of the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara River in Africa. On March 14, 1864, Baker and his party found a great lake. The lake, which he named Albert Nyanza (now also called Lake Albert), lies between Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa) and is an important source of the Nile River. Baker was knighted in 1866. In 1869, Ismail Pasha, the ruler of Egypt, appointed him as governor general of Sudan, which was then controlled by Egypt. Ismail told Baker to eliminate the slave trade. Baker added new territory in Sudan for Egypt and defeated some prominent slave traders but failed to stop the slave trade. He returned to England in 1873.
