    GENERAL OVERVIEW:
The Portuguese were the first to push out into the Atlantic, but it was Spain, following close behind, that built a New World empire that provided the economic basis for a period of Spanish supremacy in European affairs. In the short run, Spanish gold and silver form the New world made the Spanish Netherlands the financial and manufacturing center of Europe, and Spain became Europe's greatest military power. In the long run, however, overseas expansion ruined the Spanish economy, created massive European inflations, and brought the end of Spain's empire in Europe. Schmiechen, James. Age of European Exploration
  • Introduction to the Age of Exploration
In the early fifteenth century, the sea-faring nations of Europe were poised to expand their influence in the rest of the world by a program of sustained and systematic exploration. In some cases, exploration was fanned by the quest of knowledge about the world in which Europeans lived, for others, the motive was profit. Still others justified their actions as the logical extension of the Crusades of Christianity against Islam.
  • Life at Sea in the Age of Sail
Over a period of hundreds of years, seafarers from the age of the early explorers to the time of the Battle of Trafalgar shared many common experiences. Men working at sea had much to endure. Cut off from normal life on shore for months, even years, they had to accept cramped conditions, disease and poor food and pay. Above all they faced the daily dangers of sea and weather.
  • Introduction to the Age of Exploration
The desire to explore the unknown has been a driving force in human history since the dawn of time. From the earliestdocumented accounts, ancient civilizations have explored the earth by sea. Early adventurers were motivated by religious beliefs, the desire forconquest, the need to establish trade routes, and hunger for gold.

Resources for the Study of the age of exploration For the student interestedin general survey accounts the 1492 Exhibit is quite good.
    http://www.historyguide.org/earlymod/exploration.html
Resources for the Study of the Age of Exploration
There are a number of very good sources of online information regarding the Age of Exploration. An outstanding multimedia project, The European Voyages of Exploration , has been put together by the Applied History Research Group at the University of Calgary. For the student interested in general survey accounts the 1492 Exhibit is quite good. Andre Engels' Discoverers Web contains hundreds of links to further information and is an excellent place to start looking for hints to further online research. His page on primary sources is as outstanding as it is thorough. Richard Hooker has written a fine section of his general survey of western civilization called Discovery The Beginnings , and the Mariners' Museum at Newport News, Virginia, is excellent as well. On Columbus, check out Columbus and the Age of Discovery from Millersville University (Pennsylvania) and Keith A. Pickering's Columbus Navigation Home Page . Andre Engels has collected an extensive list of links on Christophorus Columbus . You can also read Dinesh D'Souza's 1995 article "The Crimes of Christopher Columbus."
