... Site Map AN APPRAISAL OF GAME AUCTIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA H EBEDES - PRIVATE WILDLIFE CONSULTANT ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION In South Africa 5 methods are used for trading with indigenous game animals. 1. Private sales negotiated between the buyer and the seller. Professional game catchers play an important role here by translocating the animals. 2. Public live auctions. 3. Public catalogue auctions. 4. The tender system. This method is used mainly by municipalities that own game and nature reserves. The SA National Parks calls for tenders to buy animals like elephant and rhinoceros. 5. Electronic auctions. Game auctions are a practical, legitimate and accepted method for trading with indigenous game and stocking private nature reserves and game ranches. According to Neethling quoted by Nel (1991) the marketing of game at public auctions has an important advantage such as a barometer for marketing of game in any season. South Africa is unique in auctioning indigenous animals because in most other countries the trading of indigenous animals is not allowed. Notwithstanding the popularity, there have been a lot of complaints and criticism of auctions. According to Young (1992) buyers are disgusted when many or all the animals purchased die shortly after the auction.

Yerkes chimpanzees `return' to Africa in unprecedented loan
The first loan of chimpanzees from the United States to an African zoological park occurred this month, when the Yerkes Primate Research Center transferred 10 of its chimpanzees to the East London Zoo in South Africa. "We are excited that the Yerkes Center can offer this unprecedented loan that will add another bond between the `new' South Africa, Emory University and the Atlanta community," said Thomas Insel, director of Yerkes, which has more than 200 chimpanzees in addition to almost 3,000 rhesus monkeys and other primates. Although chimpanzees are not among the wildlife native to South Africa, the loan of chimpanzees to that country's East London Zoo is regarded as a repatriation of sorts of these animals to their home continent, said Insel. In Eastern Africa, wild populations of chimpanzees are found in Tanzania, Zaire, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and the Sudan, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. "The loan of chimpanzees is probably the single most important event in the East London Zoo's long history," said A.D. Janse, director of the 80-year-old zoo. "It is the first really important step to the development of the zoo into one of the most important environmental educational facilities in the country.

This five-week study (55 minute class periods) includes three units. The first unit immerses the students in an extensive multimedia research project of the six biomes of North America, with each group of students researching one biome. The unit integrates biomes, ecology, and human environmental interactions in a way that produces a deeper understanding of the concepts. Class time is spent with the teacher introducing ecology concepts and the student researching specific examples for their biome. A notebook of their research is produced.
The second unit involves the study of zoos. The unit includes Internet research on zoos and a field trip to the Detroit Zoo.
The third unit ties together the first two. Working in their biome groups, students use their zoo research and their biome notebook to design a section of a zoo to be built in South Africa. The six biome zoo sections are arranged together to make a completed zoo of North American animals. A chat-line is established with students from South Africa to get their impressions and suggestions about the zoo design.

The conservation of monkeys on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea
by Dr Gail Hearn
Beaver College/Arcadia University, USA
Bioko Island, the largest of the Gulf of Guinea Islands, has a surprising variety of native monkeys: four species of guenons ("cercopithecine monkeys"), two species of colobus, and the drill, a large baboon-like monkey that is now considered to be the most endangered primate in all of Africa. Until recently, the island's steep, volcanic terrain, high rainfall and low human population have combined to protect these monkeys and their undisturbed forest habitat from many of the conditions that now threaten wildlife in other African forests.
In the last fifteen years, Bioko Island, like much of the rest of West and Central Africa, has developed an unsustainable commercial bushmeat trade, where forest animals are hunted to be sold as a delicacy in city markets. On Bioko Island, which has plentiful supplies of fish and domestic poultry, the bushmeat -including all seven of the island's monkey species - is strictly a luxury food item. It costs more than fresh beef, the most expensive domestic source of protein. The development of oil fields off shore from Bioko has brought new prosperity to the people of Bioko, and has intensified the commercial hunting.
Since 1990, Dr. Gail Hearn of Beaver College/Arcadia University (located near Philadelphia in the United States) has been monitoring the monkey populations in the most remote part of the island, the Gran Caldera de Luba, a volcanic crater on the southwestern coast. All seven species of monkeys are found in the Gran Caldera. In 1996, to encourage conservation of the monkeys, Beaver College established the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program, which is dedicated to studying and protecting the wildlife in the two legally protected areas of the island: Gran Caldera/Southern Highlands and Pico Basile. These two areas make up more than 45% of the island, and remain, except for the bushmeat hunting, almost undisturbed by human activities.

Elephant Statement: A Message from the Executive Director
June 28, 2005 In 2003 the Zoological Society of San Diego, in collaboration with the Lowry Park Zoological Garden, took a leadership role, translocating a group of elephants from Swaziland to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park and the Lowry Park Zoo in order to prevent them from being killed. At that time a group of animal rights organizations, organizations who oppose zoos, attempted to block the elephant move through legal action. In federal court, spokespeople for these groups indicated that they felt that the elephants would be better off dead than in zoos. The Zoological Society felt that it was important to save these elephants, and despite protests and letter writing campaigns, successfully rescued the elephant herd just weeks before they were scheduled to be culled. In the last two years, the Zoological Society has worked with the government of Swaziland to set aside more park space for elephants, and we have witnessed the birth of a calf to the Swazi herd at the Wild Animal Park. While we and our conservation partners continued to work progressively towards efforts that will help to conserve elephants both in the wild and in zoological settings, these animal rights groups have continued to criticize the efforts of accredited zoos. Although it takes planning and effort to take positive action, criticizing the efforts of others is something that can be accomplished by simply waiting for unfortunate incidents to occur.

NEWS PROJECTS EDUCATION GET INVOLVED ... EXTRAS For Immediate Release Date: April 10, 2003 Groups File Suit to Stop Wild African Elephant Import by U.S. Zoos Action Comes One Week after Federal Agency Questions Validity of Import Permits Washington, DC . . . Aiming to stop what would be the first import of wild elephants to American Zoo Association (AZA) accredited zoos in the U.S. in more than a decade, a coalition of wildlife conservation and animal protection organizations today filed suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the U.S. Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The suit aims to overturn federal permits issued by the FWS to the Zoological Society of San Diego, CA, and the Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, in FL, authorizing the import of eleven 12-year old wild African elephants from Swaziland. "The decision to allow this import is highly precedential and will encourage an international market for wild elephants to be used in exhibitions and entertainment, thus undermining protection for this threatened species," said Adam Roberts of Born Free USA. "In addition, permitting the import of these wild animals into this country poses potentially grave health and safety risks to the American public, particularly in regard to the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, which African elephants are known to carry."

Rudi the orangutan is one of six orangutans at the Houston Zoo. Zoos are one of the best places for families to spend a day. Children, especially, are captivated by animals, particularly animals that are unusual to them. But zoos have a wonderful effect on adults, too. Texas' biggest cities are home to some of the best zoos in the U.S. But there are also some great zoos in a few Texas cities where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find them. Here is our rundown of the best zoos in Texas: Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo houses 435 species of animals, including 35 endangered species. It is the only zoo in the U.S. to house representatives of all four Great Ape species — gorillas, orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees; and the only zoo in Texas with pygmy chimps. This zoo has one of the largest reptile collections in the U.S., and is also one of only five zoos in the world to display three of the five rhino species in captivity: black, white and one-horned Asian rhinos. Info: (817) 759-7555. Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo's nearly 100 acres, in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, are home to around 8,000 animals. It's the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888. The park's six habitats can be toured by monorail via the Monorail Safari, a one-mile tour lasting about 25 minutes. The Dallas Zoo is a participant in the national Species Survival Plans for 37 species, including gorillas, tigers, chimps, lemurs, okapis and Bali mynahs. Info: (214) 670-5656.
