African Violets (genus Saintpaulia) Many visitors will recognize African violets as the beautiful flowering plants that decorate the inside of people’s houses, particularly flower lovers from Europe and North America. Very few people know that these extraordinary houseplants originate in several mountains and coastal forests in eastern Tanzania and south-eastern Kenya. African violets, which are generally shade-loving plants that thrive in moist wet areas, were first introduced to science in 1891 via some enthusiastic German nuns. The District Commissioner of Tanga, Baron W. Saint Paul Illaire, sent specimens onto Germany where they were formally described in his honor as Saintpaulia. It is of interest that two British plant enthusiasts, Sir John Kirk and Rev. W.E. Taylor, collected and submitted specimens to Kew Botanical Gardens in 1884 and 1887, respectively; however, the quality of specimens was insufficient to permit scientific description at that time. Since the discovery of these plants, 21 species and several hybrids have been described - special African violet clubs and societies and much literature has devoted to what is now one of the chief conservation flagship species of Amani Nature Reserve. With nine species inhabiting the Eastern Usambaras, it is no wonder that many African violet enthusiasts trickle through the lowlands and highlands to look at wild plants. Collecting is prohibited, so please help us by taking care of these very important plants so that they can still be viewed in their natural habitat for generations to come.

As one of the more popular indoor houseplants, African Violets are long lasting. Their sometimes shy blooms are also long lasting, often lasting for several weeks. The plants like lots of sunshine. Place them in a sunny window, but avoid hot rays coming in during summer months. Provide artificial lighting if little sunshine is available. Soil and Fertilizers: Most garden stores carry a soil mix and fertilizer specifically for African Violets. Use a planter with openings at the bottom to allow good drainage should you overwater them. The fertilizers are higher in Phosphorous to help promote blooming. Tip: If you are having problems blooming, check the fertilizer you are using. Avoid high Nitrogen formulas. Watering: Always water them from the bottom up, and never let the leaves get wet. Water the plants every three days, if they need it. They like their water warm, not cold. If watering from the top, be careful not to get water on the leaves as they will spot.

AFRICAN VIOLETS
An extremely popular houseplant, African violets are rare in that they bloom continuously if properly maintained. They have fuzzy, heart-shaped leaves with smooth edges that grow compactly around the flowers, giving the plant a bouquet effect. Leaves are plain or scalloped and green, bronzed or variegated. Flower colors include pale lavender, purple, violet, pink, white, blue, magenta, pink, coral and white. The flowers are about an inch wide. Some are ruffled or fringed, others are bicolored. All have a bright yellow stamen in the center. Standard-size plants grow up to a foot tall. An extremely popular houseplant, African violets are rare in that they bloom continuously if properly maintained.

106. African Violet Care
african violets are the most popular flowering houseplant. There are hundreds of varieties of african violets varying in plant size and flower color.
http://www.ext.nodak.edu/county/cass/horticulture/inform/indoor/violet.htm
Cass County Extension African Violet Care African violets are the most popular flowering houseplant. This popularity is due to the fact that they thrive in normal home temperatures and flower almost continuously. Because of their small size, they are easily handled and take a minimum amount of space. There are hundreds of varieties of African violets varying in plant size and flower color. Both single and double flowered types are available. Proper light is very important for good bloom. Dark green leaves, long leaf stems and very few flowers indicate that the plant is not getting enough light. Too much light results in plants that look squat and lack vigor, have short leaf stems and small leathery leaves. Avoid putting African violets in direct sunlight which may burn the leaves. A window facing east is usually the best, especially during the summer. If fluorescent light is the total light source, violets require about fifteen hours of light per day. Light should be suspended 12 to 15 inches above the plants. African violets grow best at normal home temperatures. If kept on a window sill, beware of night chilling. High humidity is beneficial but spray misting should be limited to no more than twice a week and done very lightly to prevent water from remaining on the leaves. Water spots will develop on leaves if plants are placed in the sun or bright light when leaves are wet.

Subscribe to The Republic Hobby rooted with fans of African violets Beth Burwinkel Cincinnati Enquirer Feb. 7, 2004 12:00 AM Like many African-violet enthusiasts, Pat Hancock and Penny Wichman were influenced by their grandmothers' old-fashioned blue and purple flowers. "I just thought they were pretty," Hancock says. Today, thanks to the efforts of hybridizers, African-violet aficionados can enjoy plants in a variety of sizes, with blooms in red, blue, purple, white, pink, rose and fuchsia. Leaves come in many shades of green, and sometimes with variegation. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd') "We like to bill (the African violet) as America's favorite houseplant," says Wichman, of Petersburg, Ky. Hancock, of Middletown, Ohio, has been growing African violets for decades. Although she has been involved with African-violet clubs, she didn't attend an African-violet show until 1992. There, she became intrigued by plants 30 inches in diameter. She loved the larger plants and wanted to see some with variegated leaves. She began crossbreeding plants and growing the seeds in a painstaking effort to create large plants with variegated leaves and as many as 14 blooms per stem.

When I was a kid I remember an older lady down the street with rows of African violets in her windows. As I was pilfering a cookie or two from her, I marveled at the intense colors of the flowers with their collar of fuzzy leaves. My grandmother also grew these gargantuan African violets. In my tiny kid brain I assumed African violets must be a right of passage into garden gurudom. Only experienced gardeners that had acquired many years of knowledge were able to get these beauties to bloom indoors. Well I am here to tell you, African violets are not just for grandmothers anymore. There are so many different cultivars now. African violets come in a wide range of flower colors, sizes and foliage types. Flower colors include about every color of the rainbow as well as bicolors and multicolors. Flowers may be single or double petaled or fringed edged. Sizes range from large to the "oh so cute" miniatures.

119. African Violet Growing Tips
african Violet Growing Tips (how to properly care for them)
http://www.african-violets.com/tips.htm
African Violets are the favorite blooming houseplant and the easiest to grow. With good bright light and regular feedings, they will be blooming joyfully all year long. Just follow these easy tips and tricks to properly care for your African Violets.
LIGHT Insufficient light is one of the major reasons Violets do not bloom well. Violets must have 10 to 14 (16 is max) hours of bright light per day (no direct sun). Variegated varieties usually need more light than the plants with solid green leaves because there is less chlorophyll which is used to turn light into food for the plant. The special yellow blooming violet varieties need less light than all the other violets require. You can enhance the light for certain violets by sitting them on mirror tiles as large or larger than the violet. This reflects the available light back to the violet. If adequate natural light is not available or desired, twin tube fluorescent lights are ideal. Place the tubes eight to ten inches above the foliage for mature standard plants, and six to eight inches for miniatures, leaves, and seedlings. Because violets process nutrients during the "resting phase" (i.e. darkness) they should also have 8 hours of darkness per day. TEMPERATURE HUMIDITY 40% - 50% relative humidity is usually ideal. The humidity near your plants can be raised by supporting the plants over water. Wick watering is ideal for this because the plant sits on top of a reservoir of water.
