Over a career spent studying African myths and stories, Scheub found strange (Scheub explains it better in A Dictionary of african mythology see

Over the past 5,000 years, Bantu speakers moved from present-day Nigeria and Cameroon to most of southern Africa.
Data from p. 185, " The History and..." (see bibliography A linkage of languages
Africa may be the cradle of humanity, but it's also a tower of Babel. If you want to make sense of the 2,000 languages spoken in Africa, and understand why the Bantu language family predominates across southern Africa, you need to know about Joseph Greenberg, a University of California at Los Angeles linguist who died in May. Rather than documenting human migrations with DNA or archeology, Greenberg used language. By looking at the spread of similar words, he helped unravel one of the largest human migrations the spread of Africans speaking the Bantu languages to the southern tip of the continent. The presence of languages derived from a common tongue could, according to Greenberg and his scientific followers, be used to trace migrations that long predated written language. Greenberg painstakingly examined similarities in common words for, say, hand, mother or heart. Similarities among languages, he reasoned, were far more likely to reflect a common ancestor language than a chance concatenation of sounds. (Although words are sometimes borrowed, that turns out to be rather uncommon.)

African Mythology A to Z '04 0816048924
by: Lynch, Patricia Ann
Product Description:
42 black-and-white photographs and illustrations. 2 maps. Index. Bibliography. Cross-references. Timeline. 160 Pages. 8 1/2 x 11.
The first humans may have come from Africa, and many great civilizations have flourished there. From the long history of human habitation in Africa; the diverse geography, flora, and fauna of the continent; and the variety of African cultural beliefs comes a fascinating and strong tradition of myth. African Mythology A to Z is a readable reference to the deities, places, events, animals, beliefs, and other subjects that appear in the myths of various African peoples.
With nearly 300 entries written to inform and appeal to young people—and illustrations accompanying the text throughout—this valuable resource sheds light on a subject that many Americans, young and old, find themselves drawn to study. With an introduction that provides historical context for better understanding the myths, African Mythology A to Z fully describes, defines, and explains key stories, characters, themes, and other aspects of the myths of African peoples.
