RPGnet Forums About the Industry The Art of Game Design PDA View Full Version : African Mythology EbonDervish 01-20-2002, 08:09 PM 'Ello,
I'm planning on finnally getting off my ass and looking into creating a d20 setting based on African (sub-saharan, primarily west-african) mythology. Now, I know very little about said topic, but I always thought that Africa was a rich and untapped vein for good fantasy game concepts. Could anyone be so kind as to point me to some sites that would have such info, or better yet, give me a little info themselves? I'm mainly concerned at the moment with;
1. How their warriors fought, and with what sort of weapons
2. How their holy men/healers gennerally administered cures for ails.
3. What sort of 'magic' is involved in their mythology?
Please take note that I'm mainly concerned with West Africa (empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhay). Thanks!!
-EbonDervish Jared A. Sorensen 01-20-2002, 08:25 PM Pantheon.org (which seems to be down, argh) and Google.com should answer many of yer questions.
As for weapons, axes and knives and spears were used, as were "throwing woods" (throwing clubs made out of hardwood...deadly accurate). Bows, as well.

BOOK REVIEW:
    AFRICAN MYTHOLOGY Author: Geofrey Parrinder PUBLISHER: Peter Bedrick Books, New York YEAR OF PUBLICATION: 1986 (Third Reprint, 1991). Number of pages: 144 Reviewed by: Hannington Ochwada. L iterature and stories abound on both the old and new Africa. In fables and gossip, old Africa is portrayed in two different ways, in the positive and the negative. In ancient classical stories and discourses, for instance, it is portrayed as a land where religious inspiration and civilisation came from. The Greeks, Phoenicians and other Mediterrenean peoples got the names of their deities and religious practices from ancient Ethiopia via Egypt. Classical writers such as Herodotus, Strabo and Pliny all attest to this. Many African masks
    represent in realistic
    and stylised form
    the heads of animals
    which are believed to
    have great power,
    concentrated in
    the head. However, in most European literature since 16th Century the contribution of African culture to World Civilisation is minimised. According to most Eurocentric writers, the origins of human civilization commenced with the dawn of what has been described as the Greek "miracle". In this view, all world civilisations have their roots in the Hellenic culture, and there can be no other progenitor than this! As a result, African achievements in the arts and sciences are relegated to obscurity. They are presumed to represent primitive and primordial stages of human progress. In this regard, they become useful only in so far as they help illuminate the early stages of western historical development.

Okay, just to set the record straight... when I decided to do a links page, my first thought was, well, there's like, Perseus, Bullfinch's, Gutenburg for originals... short list, right? And then I started looking. And looking. I filtered out most of the crap, and I still had a list longer than my arm, and about ten hours blocked-off to make this page. So yeah, it's about as well-organized as my sock drawer, but deal with it! We've got more important things to do for the moment, heh.
