Although the vast majority of African Americans are unfamiliar with Pushkin's monumental works, most students of literature are at least aware of his "Blackamoor of Peter the Great," an unfinished romance which relates the biographical data of the poet's great-grandfather, Ibrahim Petrovitch Gannibal his black great-grandfather. Some early critics wrongly suspected that Pushkin attempted to aggrandize the African lineage of this black forebear by playing up the family tradition that he was an Ethiopian princeling. However, Pushkin certainly did not need to embellish his ancestor's own personal history. For the accomplishments of Ibrahim Petrovitch Gannibal are proof of what any man - despite his colour - could rise to, given the opportunity. Ibrahim was treated as no less than a member of the royal family at court and, in the biographical notes on him written either by his wife or by someone in her family shortly after his death, the following statement is made: "....he (Peter) wished to make examples of them and put (Russians) to shame by convincing them that out of every people and even from among wild men - such as Negores, whom our civilized nations assign exclusively to the class of slave, there can be formed men who by dint of application can obtain knowledge and learning and thus become helpful to their monarch."

  • KAGAME, Alexis-1912 to 1981
La Philosophie Bantu rwandaise de l'etre.
Abbe Alexis Kagame was a Rwandese historian, ethnologist, and philosopher, who became the intellectual leader of the Rwandese people by articulating their cosmology in contemporary terms. Kagame was born into a family of court historians and soon became intimately familiar with the oral traditions of the Tutsi. His family converted to Catholicism after World War I, and Kagame attended both a missionary school as well as one for the sons of chiefs. He entered a seminary in 1929 and was ordained in 1941. By 1938, while still a seminarian, he was an editor of a Catholic newspaper. He also taught at the novitiate of the Brothers of St. Joseph (Bayozefiti), which he continued to do for five years after his ordination. During this time Kagame became a close friend of King MUTARA III and rose to prominence in the country. Kagame's abilities would have been apparent under any conditions, but he had the good fortune of achieving public attention as Catholicism became a pervasive force in the country. In 1943, Kagame published his first book, an oral history of ancient Rwanda. This book was followed by several volumes of poetry and finally by a multivolume creation epic, published in French as La divine pastorale (1952-1955). It presents a Rwandese creation myth and history of the world, revealing parallels between Tutsi traditions and Christian teaching - a favorite theme of Kagame's. In the 1970s he added several studies of Rwandese dynastic poetry.

Special Interest
Pentouch Literary
Despite the phenomenal interest in today's African-American literary voices, aspiring authors and literary entrepreneurs cannot afford to present raw, unedited, or poorly proofread manuscripts to agents, editors, or discerning readers. Finding a skilled, professional freelance African-American editor continues to be extremely difficult. Pentouch Literary specializes in African-American literature, from the intricacies of our dialect to the art of conveying our cultural flair. After spending months—in some cases years—nurturing your manuscript, you don't want an editor transforming your words to the extent that your style is diluted. You don't want to be questioned or corrected every time you use words like ain't, 'cause, or fixin', a nonstandard form of the verb be , drop the g from ing , or end dialogue with a preposition. What you want is a team of professionals to polish your manuscript to the highest standards.
Our staff strives to help you bring your writing to a higher level of quality and professionalism. Whether line editing, copyediting, or proofreading, we provide feedback and commentary designed to help you improve your writing by pointing out consistent weaknesses such as unrealistic or uncharacteristic dialogue, excessive description, inconsistent characterization, ineffective pacing, and the like, and by referring you to books or resources that can help you improve upon those weaknesses. We also point out any particular strengths and powerful phrases, paragraphs, or segments in your work.
