Introduction to African Grey Parrots as Pets
There are two subspecies of African grey parrot commonly found in the pet trade - the Congo African grey (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) and the Timneh African grey (Psittacus erithacus timneh) . The Congo African grey is slightly larger than the Timneh, and has bright red tail feathers. The Timneh's tail feathers are darker (maroon), and overall the Timneh usually has has slightly darker coloration than the Congo, especially over the back (although not always the case). While the Congo's beak is grey, the Timneh's upper mandible is bone colored with a dark edge, while the lower mandible is grey. There is some debate over whether there are significant differences in temperament between Congos and Timnehs. Some say the Timnehs are slightly more laid back and less prone to feather picking and other neurotic behaviour. Others say there is no difference. Either way, there is a lot of individual variation between birds of both subspecies and even if there is a slight overall difference in temperament, this generalization won't necessarily hold true for any given bird.

Young RED African Grey Parrot
The above young male African Grey ( erithacus or CONGO Grey) has a large amount of RED feathering that is not normally found. The pictured bird above has been followed through its young life and all EXTRA red feathering was lost during his first molt at approximately 9 months of age. Gwen Williams Ottawa Canada I have had numerous babies with extra red in their feathers. In each case the red has molted out at one year of age. The picture above is one. I have noticed that the formula seems to affect the amount of red - Hagen Tropican gives me a lot of red while Pretty Bird gives much less. In one case a baby fed Pretty Bird until six weeks of age and then Tropican until weaning had red in all the feathers or parts of feathers which were developning from 6 weeks on. I have also noted that some babies in a clutch will get extensive red while others will get none. Babies from some pairs are also more likely to get extra red than babies from other pairs. In older Greys I have noticed that much brighter, solid red feathers sometimes occur if a bird has plucked feathers in that area. I believe that this is a result of damage to the feather follicles. Also of note is that my Meyers hen grows bight yellow feathers on her tummy where she plucks a very bare brood patch when nesting.

The Grey Parrot FAQ
by Mike and Beth Holland
or
The African Grey Parrot has been called "the perfect mix of brains and beauty" (Bird Talk, Aug. 92) and the "cadillac of parrots" (Bird Talk Sept. 93). Much of the notoriety of this species stems from the phenomenal gift of speech members exhibit. While many parrots learn some words or phrases, many cases have been documented of African Greys learning multiple lines of songs, prayers, or plays. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the best talking parrot or parrot like bird as a African Grey named Prudle. Prudle was captured near Jinja, Uganda in 1958 and when "he" retired from public life in 1977 had a vocabulary of nearly 1000 words. Many owners have been surprised (and sometimes shocked) when their Grey learned a new word or phrase after hearing it only a few times. One of our favorite stories in this respect was one related by a priest that had a pet Grey. While hanging some pictures in his office, the priest hit his hand with a hammer. He let out a stream of obscenities that his Grey learned (from this one occurrence according to the priest). The priest's embarrassment was compounded by the other aspect of greys gift for mimicking, that is they often sound exactly like the person that spoke the words or phrase. Greys (the English spelling is usually used - not Gray) are not limited to imitating speech. Phones, microwaves ovens, answering machines, other birds and chain saws (in the African jungle) have all been documented as part of the Grey's repertoire. Many owners and some studies suggest that Greys (and other parrots) don't just mimic but can use words learned in new combinations to convey new wants, needs and desires. Alex, a famous Grey that has been studied for years by Dr. Irene Pepperberg, invented the term "long yellow" to express his desire for more corn on the cob. A European study found Greys to have the intellectual capacity of a 5-year-old human child with the emotional development of a human 2 year old (read as terrible two year old).

http://www.minorkey.com/grey.html
The African Grey Parrot
Mankind - not cats - is the biggest and worst enemy of psittacus erithacus erithacus (Congo) and timneh (Timneh, the lighter-colored beak species) of African Grey parrot. In the very earlier days, natives killed them for food and for their pretty red tail feathers, which were used for headdresses and were considered to have magical properties. In fact, they are STILL for sale, right here on the world wide web! (See the "Deer Spirit Wall Hanger" wall-hanging for sale.) To the credit of the human species, about a century ago, the birds were brought to ports to be sold to the Europeans, who were their first real non-threatening human friends. Parrots, especially African Greys, are featured in many 19th century European portraits, having found favor mostly with the ladies. To this day, and even though they are bred in the US as domesticated pets, it is possible to see rows of wild baby Greys on perches in Ghana, being tamed for subsequent sale. During the days that the sailing ships called at the ports of Western Africa, gathering bounty for sale to Europe, African Greys were stuffed into long narrow cylinders made of reeds, and stowed in the bottom of the ships with no water, and very little food. Most people did not think parrots required water! So most of them died of thirst on the way to their new homelands, and nobody knew why. Even once they reached Europe, veterinarians prescribed NO WATER for the birds in their journals and to the new parrot owners, so the Greys were not given water and eventually died in their new homes, too. They were given dry bread, uncooked corn, and cooked rice - and of course could not survive. Around 1870, some people argued that the birds seemed healthier if they were given water once a day, so some of them (thank goodness) lived.

The African Grey Parrot is a medium-sized parrot about 12 inches/30cm long (Congo subspecies) of the genus Psittacus , native to Africa . As the name implies, the African grey parrot is predominantly grey, with accents of white and a red or maroon tail depending on the subspecies . Greys, like all parrots, are zygodactyl While comparative judgements of animal intelligence are always very difficult to make objectively, Psittaciformes are generally regarded as being amongst the most intelligent of birds. African grey parrots are particularly noted for their cognitive abilities, which are believed to have evolved as a consequence of their history of cooperative feeding on the ground in central Africa.

Incubation 28 days
Age at weaning 14-16 weeks
Age at maturity 3-4 years
Country of origin Equatorial Africa
Natural habitat Forested plains. Birds go on foraging excursions to sparsely wooded savannas and to open country. Their distribution is largely identical to the range of the African oil palm, the fruit of which forms the bulk of the bird's diet.
Description Overall color is varying shades gray; bare skin patch around eyes; eyes of young birds are gray, but change to grayish-yellow in adulthood.
Temperament The African Grey is extremely intelligent, perhaps topping all other parrots in it's ability to learn new things throughout a lifetime. Adult greys are considered shy and introverted, and usually bond with only one person, being aloof with everyone else. They are also one of the most rigid and pattern oriented of all parrots, being keenly observant and sensitive to the slightest change in routine. Excellent talkers and mimics, these birds can accurately imitate specific human voices and household noises such as the doorbell, telephone, or microwave. As very empathetic and emotional birds, greys have distinct personalities and can be demanding of their owner's time and attention. Talking ability Excellent Noise level Moderate Cage requirements 24 x 24 inches; bar spacing 3/4" Or 1"

http://www.hilozoo.com/animals/AB_afrcn_parrot.htm
African Grey Parrot Psittacus erithacus erithacus Family: Psittacidae The range of this bird encompasses the forested areas of Ghana to Lake Victoria into Angola and through the area formerly known as the Congo. The species consists of three subspecies with the type race represented by Psittacus erithacus. All are similar in appearance but differ in size and variation of colors. The birds of the type race are grey with silver grey on the crown, nape, neck, and mantle. The under parts are whitish, the flight feathers are dark grey, and the tail coverts and tail a bright scarlet. The beak and legs are dark or black. The Greys are very gregarious and are reputed to be the best mimics among the parrots. They are found in large groups and cause considerable damage to cultivated crops. They feed on fruits, seeds, young shoots, and nuts. Because of their nature, the young of this parrot are taken in considerable numbers yearly and hand-raised for the export trade where they are sold for high prices. When hand-raised they become extremely tame and affectionate toward their owner. These birds are long-lived if given proper care and survive 70 or more years. Our bird arrived in 1998, gender unknown.

Being A Birdbrain Isn't So Bad
By Steve Dale
If only Curly of the Three Stooges knew the truth every time Moe said, "You birdbrain!" It turns out, being a birdbrain isn't so bad - at least if the birdbrain happens to belong to any of the many parrot species. "Parrots more or less share an intellect equal to great apes and dolphins," says ethnologist and avian researcher Irene Pepperberg, a visiting associate professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Cambridge. Doggone it; if you have an Amazon or African Grey parrot, you can even boast that your bird is smarter than your neighbor's pooch or kitty cat. One upon a time when researchers studied bird intelligence, chicken was the bird of choice - hardly MENSA candidates, this is how the moniker birdbrain started. Later pigeons were used, and all the while even scientists assumed parrots merely mimicked words, not truly understanding their meanings. Pepperberg, who grew up in Brooklyn with little budgies (often called parakeets) as her only siblings, thought if songbirds could whistle in excess of 100 songs and use different songs in different contexts, there must be at least some understanding of their meanings.

African grey parrot care
Your African Grey Parrot can be your best friend, accompanying you until its ripe old age of 80 if you care for it well.
The African Grey Parrot is a grey colored parrot that is very intelligent. It is probably the most intelligent of all the parrot varieties. Nicknamed the Grey, this parrot makes a good talker who mimics strong language and thus either humors you or leaves you exasperated. The Grey can chatter to itself in a mixture of different tones and voices. It seems as if to assume a multi-personality front. Actually, it delights in practicing the different voices it has learned. You can teach your Grey to talk by starting with short, simple phrases. Emphasize your tone so that the bird picks it up more quickly. Training lessons should be short at about 10 minutes to avoid stressing the bird. It is always easier to start off with a young bird. You can discipline your pet just like any other intelligent pet. Please refrain from physical abuse as this provokes the bird to become aggressive. Greys are intelligent enough to remember bad experiences and this stresses them and they don't react that well with strangers. Greys are devoted to each other and preen each other just like the lovebird species of parrots do. If you keep a lone Grey, it will devote itself to you. The bird will clamor for your attention and relish hopping all over you. A neglected Grey may scream and call to you. If you are leaving the room for a length of time, it is better to calm the bird by using a cage cover.
