Seizures in African Grey Parrots
African Grey parrots are known to have problems with seizures, most commonly related to hypocalcemia. Do not rule out hypocalcemia problems based on one blood test showing a calcium level in the normal range. Calcium levels dip and rise according to circadian rhythm. Normal calcium levels for psittacines range from 8.0-13.0 mg/dl. Running an ionized calcium level may be diagnostic; however reference ranges for the different species are not yet established or published for many species. If a grey is feather picking, or is clumsy, or has had a seizure, try treating with calcium in the drinking water (Neo-Calglucon TM Sanzoz, calcium glubionate 23 mg/30 ml drinking water or 23 mg/kg PO q24h), supplementing with Tums TM (calcium carbonate) and having the owner offer more high calcium food (cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt and almonds). Often, however, calcium supplementation is not enough to control seizures in greys, and this is because there are several factors that control calcium homeostasis, including the uropygial gland, vitamin D levels, possible concurrent hypovitaminosis A, ultraviolet light exposure, secretions from the parathyroid glands and secretions from the ultimobranchial glands

Plasma Cholesterol Concentrations in African Grey Parrots Fed Diets Containing Psyllium
F. J. Bavelaar, MVR, MSc A. C. Beynen, Prof. Dr. Ir. Department of Nutrition Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands Key words: African grey parrots, psyllium, plasma cholesterol concentrations Abstract The incidence of atherosclerosis in African Grey parrots is high. An important risk factor for atherosclerosis in humans is an elevated plasma cholesterol concentration; this might also hold for parrots. We have shown earlier that plasma cholesterol levels in African Grey parrots can be lowered by a decrease in the intake of saturated fatty acids or an increase in the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In humans, as in experimental animals, the ingestion of psyllium has a hypocholesterolemic effect. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the influence of dietary psyllium in African Grey parrots. The diets contained either cellulose 3.22% or 6.44 % psyllium; the control and test fibers were exchanged on a weight basis. Three groups, with a total of 16 animals, were fed the experimental diets according to a 3

by Monica Gonzalez The African Grey Parrot comes from a broad area of Central Africa. P.e. Erithacus being the nominate race, the Congo African Grey. P.e. Timneh more commonly called Timneh African Grey. Given the appropriate nutritional requirements in a nurturing home, African Grey's can have a lifespan of 50-70 years. The Congo African Grey Parrot is a medium grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The feathers on the head have brushed white edging. The eye area is of bare white skin. A solid black beak and bright red tail are the finishing touches to this magnificent parrot. Young CAG's have dark grey tips on their tail feathers. They are also known as the "Red Tailed Grey". They vary in size from 12-14" from beak to tail, also can vary in weight between 400-650 grams depending on the frame of the individual bird. Greys from Nigeria usually have dark grey wings. CAG's from the Congo region are, on average, larger in size. On occasion you might see a Grey with red feathering throughout the body, they are known as "Red Factor Greys". The Timneh African Grey Parrot is a dark grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The eye area is of bare white skin. They have a "bone" colored upper mandible and a dark maroon tail. The Timneh is smaller in size ranging from 9-11 inches beak to tail. Also TAG's can vary in weight from 275-400 grams.

Both the Congo African Grey at left and the Timneh African Grey at right, are excellent mimics and can imitate the human voice as well as any bird species can! These highly intelligent birds require a lot of attention and stimulation and can become quite devoted to their owners. They are relatively quiet and domestic pets mimic the sounds they hear, thus the noise level of a Grey can be controlled somewhat. Greys can be sensitive and do not like loud noise in general. The Congo African Grey is larger and has a red tail whereas the Timneh African Grey has a maroon-colored tail. The Timneh is usually a bit darker grey color than the Congo and the upper mandible is a lighter shade. Both subspecies are native to west and central Africa.
approx. size: 11- 13 inches/33 cm native to: west and central Africa available season: year-round min. cage size: 30''x30"x30" talking ability: excellent!

From Jungle to Jumble
Summary of problems relating to animal welfare
In the opinion of expert ornithologist, Peter Robinson, around half of the 50,000 to 70,000 birds on sale would have been wild-caught from elsewhere in the world. Capture methods are crude and brutal, and the additional stresses associated with confinement and transportation result in significant loss of life. According to research by the Environmental Investigation Agency, 1992 three out of four birds destined for the pet trade do not survive the capture process and the arduous journey to developed countries. Generally, dealers who import birds into the UK, usually via another port of entry into the EU, will travel from one pet market to another to dispose of their sick and stressed animals. Although some dealers also run pet shops that are licensed and inspected, others do not. Little is known about the temporary accommodation used by non pet shop-owning dealers to house birds between pet markets. Technically these premises should also be licensed but generally are not. Parrots are known to be neophobic or fearful of new situations. The constantly changing environment and replacement or removal of cage mates adds greatly to stress endured by parrots traded at pet markets.

FROM RAINFOREST TO RETAIL
Wild Bird Trade
Bird carcasses from Senegal. Photo by Arnhem / KBVBV, courtesy of EIA. In this fourth part of From Rainforest to Retail - a special Animal Aid report - we outline the problems with the wild bird trade. Imported, wild-caught birds are typically cheaper to purchase than their captive-bred counterparts. Depending on the species, customers may be charged a price up to several hundred per cent more than the trappers received. People who buy birds as pets invariably cannot distinguish between wild-caught animals and those bred in captivity. They will be unaware that, through their purchase, they will have contributed to a trade that involves cruelty and high mortality. The wild bird trade also threatens the survival of many species. Properly monitoring and regulating the wild bird trade would cost more to enforce than it would generate in revenue. Therefore, regulations and laws designed to control the trade are poorly enforced in both exporting and importing countries. Bird dealers know this and rely on lack of enforcement to bend and break the rules. The illegal trade often uses the legal trade as its cover. Many of the most common methods of smuggling endangered birds depend on a legal trade being in place.

The Timneh African Grey
By Tammy Gagne
The Timneh African grey ( Psittacus erithacus timneh ), though not quite as popular at its more readily available cousin, the Congo African grey, possesses nearly all the benefits of the larger subspecies. According to many handlers, it also lacks many of its shortcomings. Although it is very rare, some greys have subtle red feathering throughout their bodies. These birds may be referred to as red-factor greys. and really Although both species are native to Africa, the Timneh is found in a smaller area, including Liberia and the Ivory Coast. Wild greys flock in large numbers and are known for causing considerable damage to cultivated crops. They will feed on fruits, seeds, young shoots, and nuts, but they seem to possess a special fondness for maize. Although the Timnehs are known for being less timid than the Congos, remember that this is a relative statement. In general greys are shy birds. They are known for growling when frightened, but most will first attempt to flee from perceived danger.
