African Greys are great for either multi-bird households, OR in a household where there is nearly always somebody at home, to provide the African Grey with the opportunity to be "part of the flock". From my experience, they are non-aggressive even to smaller species. Although, of course, don't place them discriminately with smaller birds. They may be territorial in the beginning, or even bullying the little ones. Caution is always advisable when placing birds in close proximity.

Article V - Wingclipping And The African Grey
    WINGCLIPPING AND THE AFRICAN GREY
    by Bobbi Brinker
Clipping a bird's wings is done mainly for their own safety. Birds can fly into windows, doors, ceiling fans, hot cooking foods and any number of places in the home where they can injure themselves. Wing clipping is also a protection against birds escaping into the out-of-doors. Once outside, an indoor flightless bird can easily take flight with the help of a gust of wind. Unfortunately, escaped birds have little chance of survival outdoors. They face death from a predator or starvation, while at home their owners grieve for their lost pet. When clipping a bird's wings, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the clip be done properly and that the first wing clip is done only after a baby bird has learned to fly with precision and control. THE FIRST CLIP
An agile, confident, sure-footed Grey is the product of being allowed to fledge. Allowing a baby bird to learn to fly enables him to develop coordination and control. He learns to land where he intends to land, learns how to flutter to the floor safely and learns how to control his body. After he is clipped, this knowledge and confidence stays with him. A bird who knows how to control his body is much less likely to be injured.

The Pet African Grey Parrot
The African Grey Parrot is a very social bird. It requires human company or a mate. I keep mine indoors always, free and loose (with me or at least in the same room) when I am home, and in a very large cage when I am away at work. The cage has several swings, a main perch made of manzanita wood, climbing branches (birch), a large water basin (for bathing and drinking, which I scrub and refill 1x a day), a few toys, and a big food bowl which I scrub and refill 2x a day. Greys are originally from Africa and therefore are not to be kept at temperatures below freezing. Their native habitat is WARM. Climates for them can safely vary between 60F and 85F. A cold draft could possibly kill them, and in fact a cold draft could kill any pet bird by giving it a quick deadly case of pneumonia. At temperatures around 85F, the Grey requires plenty of shade and water, because otherwise they will overheat. When they overheat, they hold their wings out, open their beaks, and breathe shallowly - and this means they are in danger of heat stroke. Room temperature, 70 to 72F, is probably the best for them. Never feed the African Grey parrot "bird seed," "parrot seed," or any kind of seeds at all. This has been proven to be extremely dangerous and will shorten their lives considerably. They are to be fed fresh vegetables, some fruit, and some cooked meat (such as chicken and steak). I feed my Grey fresh raw vegetables every morning (broccoli and carrots, mostly), one slice of toast that has been cut into strips, and a half banana and then much later I give him some of whatever I am having for dinner. They play hard and burn off their food quickly, so you want to make sure there is always something fresh and good for them in their food bowls.

To achieve the first short-term goal, I am constructing an ethogram using videotapes of African Grey Parrot behavior; the ethogram will allow me to judge the feasibility of its use for long-term study in three ways. First, I will identify the amount and types of behavioral data that were collected. Second, I will create definitions of and guidelines for assigning behavioral elements that will provide the ethogram's underlying structure. Third, when the underlying structure is complete, I will test the ethogram's utility and inter-observer reliability. Achieving the second short-term goal will require some understanding of the natural history of African Grey Parrots. Knowledge of daily activities (e.g., where and when the parrots forage for food) and possible effects of human presence on African Grey Parrot behavior are important for the design and implementation of conservation practices. During my study, I collected some of this information in the form of written field notes and videotape; further anaylsis for the ethogram will provide even more information.

I offer a wide range of parrot behavior consulting services and am privileged to consult with owners as far away as Australia, Japan and Canada. Each consultation is tailored specifically to meet the client's needs, and is conducted in as thorough a manner as possible. In each case, I attempt not only to target solutions to particular behavior problems, but also provide up-to-date, accurate education regarding species-specific nutrition, caging, social issues and environment. For additional information about my consulting services click here. Grey Matters…New Thoughts on African Grey Parrots by Pamela Clark I saw my first Congo African Grey 27 years ago, and I have never forgotten the experience. I walked into a pet store, made eye contact with this bird, and immediately felt as if he was looking straight into my soul. By the time I was able to afford to have a Grey, and began looking around in my area for a baby, I couldn’t find one that I wanted.

The African Grey Parrot is a medium-sized parrot about 12 inches/30cm long (Congo subspecies) of the genus Psittacus , native to Africa . As the name implies, the African grey parrot is predominantly grey, with accents of white and a red or maroon tail depending on the subspecies . Greys, like all parrots, are zygodactyl , having 4 toes on each foot—two front and two back. They feed primarily on nuts and fruits, supplemented by leafy matter. While comparative judgements of animal intelligence are always very difficult to make objectively, Psittaciformes are generally regarded as being amongst the most intelligent of birds. African grey parrots are particularly noted for their cognitive abilities, which are believed to have evolved as a consequence of their history of cooperative feeding on the ground in central Africa.

Behavior and Personality AFRICAN GREY PARROT - Congo african gray parrots are very common and are one of the most popular and most frequently bred parrots in the United States. Since they are happiest left alone, they make good pets for people who live in quiet homes, particularly in homes without children. But since they are extremely intelligent, they require many toys and some interaction to prevent behavior problems. Young birds adapt readily to new surroundings and should be exposed to new experiences. Adults are less adaptable and may feather pick in response to changes in their routine. In fact, African greys have a higher incidence of feather-picking problems than most parrot species. Grooming Routine bathing or showering is vital to maintaining good plumage and skin condition. Bathing will also reduce feather dust. Birds can be misted and allowed to dry in a warm room or in the sun, or dried with a blow drier. Care should be taken not to clip the wing feathers excessively as African greys often fall and injure themselves, so clip only enough so the bird will glide to the floor.

FEEDING AN AFRICAN GREY PARROT
General Information
There is a lot of information available about diets for pet birds and as time goes on, our knowledge continues to improve. This is due to heightened awareness of the importance of nutrition plus increased research involving pets and wild birds. As with all other animals, birds need a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Different species of birds often require different foods.
Should I be concerned about what my African Grey eats?
Nutrition is the most commonly neglected element of owning a pet bird. Too often owners assume they are feeding a proper diet to their African Grey when in fact they are not. It is a common source of many health problems. It is important to continually strive to improve your bird's diet. This will involve reading, carefully interpreting and integrating the information along with a certain degree of common sense. Above all, discuss nutrition with your veterinarian!
It is not good enough to feed an African Grey just to keep it alive; instead, your goal should be to help it thrive and flourish. Your bird's entire health will depend on how well it is fed.
