Each baby is also allowed to fledge naturally and fly repeatedly prior to receiving it's first wing clipping. Babies are all closed-banded and issued their own hatch certificate. As a small aviary, we provide each baby parrot we raise with the individualized care and attention needed to become happy, healthy and well adjusted pet birds. Large doses of TLC are essential in ensuring proper socialization and a good disposition. Our hand fed baby birds receive lots of cuddling, kissing and one on one playtime.

CHOOSING AN AFRICAN GREY PARROT
General Information
There are 2 types of African Grey parrots, the Congo African Grey and the smaller duller colored Timneh African Grey, parrot which has a maroon colored tail.
Purchasing an African Grey Parrot
African Greys may be purchased from a pet store or a reputable breeder. When selecting an African Grey, try to choose a young bird as it may be easier to tame and train. Older, wild, colony or parent raised birds may prove difficult to tame. Hand raised babies often make better pets since they have been completely socialized with humans. Young birds are easier to tame and adapt readily to new environments and situations. Your new bird should be exposed early to different events (young and old people, males and females, other pets, car trips, visits to the veterinarian, etc.) to help promote a calm, well-adjusted pet. The lively, alert bird that is not easily frightened is more likely a healthy bird. After purchasing your new bird, have it examined by your veterinarian.
Veterinary Care
African Greys require regular, routine veterinary health check-ups. Your veterinarian can perform a physical examination, grooming (beak, nail or feather trim ) and laboratory tests as needed. During these semi-annual check-ups, health, nutritional and maintenance issues can be identified and addressed. Veterinary check-ups help prevent disease and will aid in the maintenance of a long lasting, healthy relationship between you and your bird.

Hand reared African Grey Parrots
The African Grey Hand reared African Grey Parrots - a pet for life Hand-reared African Grey Parrots can make wonderful, lively, intelligent pets, but it is important to make sure that they are hand-reared and cuddly-tame. It is always advisable to find Greys that have been hand-reared in small numbers so that they have had a lot of human attention at a very early age - this will ensure that the birds are completely tame and will have a wonderful life in any home they go to. It is very important that all the conditions are correct when these birds are moved from where they are hand-reared to their new environment. Greys can be moved when they are about twelve weeks old as long as they have been completely weaned. Also the correct diet to keep the bird in peak condition, will ensure that you have the right knowledge of how to care for your new pet . I f you are looking for a hand-reared parrot as a pet, remember that this is a major decision and you must make sure that you have all the information, advice and equipment necessary before you decide to take on a bird which could be a loving pet for over thirty years! If you are interested in an African Grey Parrot as a pet, then please contact Rob Harvey who will be glad to recommend breeders.

Trade Palm Nuts - excellent for breeding parrots Palm nuts are the natural food of African Grey parrots. It is actually the yellow flesh around the nut that is important although larger parrots such as macaws can crack the nut as well. Palm nuts are good for all parrots particularly breeding birds. As some birds tend to be fussy eaters it is best to start with just a kilo to try them out. On arrival put the palm nuts into a deep freeze. They should be thawed over night and washed before use. Feed a pair of African Greys 4 nuts per day.

African parrots
An Introduction to African Greys by Rebecca Margison African Greys, Psittacus erithacus, are parrots that are native to several countries in Africa. The bird commonly called the Congo Grey is the nominate species, Psittacus erithacus erithacus, and the Timneh Grey, Psittacus erithacus timneh is the subspecies. There are some people who may refer to a “Cameroon” or a “Ghana” Grey; these are not different species. The names refer to the country in which the birds are believed to have come. This is not always accurate, though, since the laws regarding importation caused many sellers of Greys in Africa to lie about the country of origin.

The Congo African Grey
Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is
one of the most popular species
kept for a pet. This is due to
its great intelligence, quiet
demeanor and excellent ability
to mimic. A grey can easily
sound exactly like the human who teaches it to talk. Some individuals have amazing vocabularies. The Timneh African Grey (Psittacus erithacus timneh) is smaller than the Congo African Grey but has the same wonderful personality characteristics and talking ability. Some think that theTimneh is less nervous than the Congo. At AVES INTERNATIONAL we raise both the Congo and the Timneh African Grey subspecies. http://www.netpets.org/birds/healthspa/gryfledge.html
African Grey Fledging:
Encouraging Flight Rita Shimniok
Often discussed in the raising of captive bred African Greys is the need for proper socialization and nurturing in order to help the baby become the best pet Grey possible. Baby Greys should be exposed to a variety of foods during weaning, and guidelines should be set for them. A very critical element of the weaning process is fledging. I strongly believe that if an African Grey is not allowed proper fledging time, that it can detrimentally affect their future as a companion parrot. In the early stages of development, African Grey chicks exercise their wings, preparing for the day when they will launch their first attempt at flight. As the babies grow and feather, the wing flapping becomes a larger part of their past time, building strong muscles. Utilizing their wings for balance, attempts are made to climb on top of brooder containers and low perches. As the coordination of the chicks improve, breeders raise the perches in the weaning cage accordingly. Finally the day arrives when the baby Grey is ready to take it's first flight. Often noticed by refusals to consume formula at hand-feeding time, it is instinct for baby parrots to lighten as their body prepares for the final adjustments that precede flight. Soon after, maybe hours - sometimes days - the first flight attempt is made. For many clumsy African Greys, the first flight is haphazardly accomplished - usually short, low and lacking a graceful landing.

BellaOnline's Birds Editor For The Love of GREYS by Bobbi Brinker - Book Review Most people who have an African Grey Parrot and are on the internet have heard about Bobbi Brinker. Her birds are commonly called Bobbi Babies by those fortunate enough to have one of her babies.
She first wrote this book and self published it as a paperback, spiral bound book in 1999. The new book has a wonderful colour cover, some additions and corrections and is now published by Lucky Press. This should ensure that more people will have the opportunity to purchase it and read the advice offered by Bobbi. She dispels many of the popular myths about these birds – such as African Greys being clumsy or pluckers or one-person birds or needing more calcium. She explains how these myths became popular and how to prevent these problems from happening to your African Grey Parrot. She includes several pages devoted to the diet of an African Grey Parrot going into detail about the vitamin requirements and which foods provide these vitamins and also provides easy to follow recipes.

More recently, field studies have reported behaviors that, when observed in nonhuman primates, are considered as evidence for human-like intelligence. Such behaviors include cooperative alarm signaling ("sentinel behavior") in flocks of Indigo macaws (

Date last edited: The African Grey Parrot comes from a broad area of Central Africa. P.e. Erithacus being the nominate race, the Congo African Grey. P.e. Timneh more commonly called Timneh African Grey. Given the appropriate nutritional requirements in a nurturing home, African Grey's can have a lifespan of 50-70 years. The Congo African Grey Parrot is a medium grey bird with shades of light grey on the body. The feathers on the head have brushed white edging. The eye area is of bare white skin. A solid black beak and bright red tail are the finishing touches to this magnificent parrot. Young CAG's have dark grey tips on their tail feathers. They are also known as the "Red Tailed Grey". They vary in from 12-14" from beak to tail, also can vary in weight between 400-650 grams depending on the frame of the individual bird. Greys from Nigeria usually have dark grey wings. CAG's from the Congo region are, on average, larger in size. On occasion you might see a Grey with red feathering throughout the body - they are known as "Red Factor Greys".
