African Grey Family: Psittacidae
African Grey Congo Psittacus erithacus Photo: Exotic Tropicals
Members of this family are the best talkers of all the exotic birds.
They have been known to have vocabularies of well over 200 words and in one case a bird named "Prudle", a male African Grey, is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as having a vocabulary of over 1000 words. In the wild these birds live in flocks of one to two hundred birds.

Feather Your Nest is a six bird aviary located in Franklin Park, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago. We focus on raising African parrots and are currently breeding Congo African Greys, Meyer's Parrots and Senegal Parrots. The purpose of this website is to allow parrot-lovers a virtual visit with our birds and develop a interactive forum for parrot-lovers and breeders.
Although my family loves to play with and help feed the baby birds, Feather Your Nest is really my project. A few years ago, I bought a four year old Congo African Grey hen from a family in Minnesota as a family pet and companion for my male Congo African Grey. One month after being in my home, and while still in quarantine, she laid six eggs at the bottom of her cage. She hadn't even seen my other Grey yet! So, I named her Amazing Grace. This is what really sparked my interest in breeding African parrots.
I have always been interested in animals and worked with imported parrots in the Eighties. Since my experience with Amazing Grace, I have decided to breed parrots. My quest for parrot knowledge has introduced me to a number of really great people. Even though it drives my family crazy, I plan my vacations as a way of meeting these interesting individuals. I can't even count the number of times I have been on the phone/email with:

Welcome to The Parrot's Perch Website! I'm Tina Usher, and all of my life I have been captivated by all types of birds. I am a small aviary just outside of Chicago and I have been breeding the large parrots since 1981. I specialize in Congo African Greys, Moluccan, Umbrella and Medium Sulphur Crested (Elenora) Cockatoos and Green Wing Macaws. My home raised, hand-fed babies are well adjusted, gentle and loving. My clients rave about how much larger and more outgoing their parrots are compared to other pet birds they see. I also provide in- your -home grooming and behavioral consultations. Seeing the need, I am currently developing care, training and behavior workshops to help bird owners mend and/or improve their relationships with their avian pals. I'm using my education, training, experience and love for our birds to teach people how to understand and cohabit happily with their pet parrots.

    MANAGING STRESS IN
    AFRICAN GREY PARROTS
    by Bobbi Brinker
Many of the behavior problems seen in Greys result from not permitting the bird to be a bird - or from a failure to understand and accept that Greys are prey animals from a wild world beyond our knowing and have little in common with familiar domesticated animals. Greys are exotic beings from a strange land. They don't understand our customs or our language. It is up to us, as guardians of a treasure, to treat them with the same care and courtesy one would offer a well-loved and welcome human visitor in our homes. We should be grateful they love and trust us; that they care enough about us to want to communicate with us in our own language; that they permit us to love them. We should rejoice when their wild instincts are overcome by the love they feel for us. I have observed wild caught Greys in a pair or breeding situation and find that they are not aggressive. They do feel fear (justified) when the presence of humans intrudes. However, when closed circuit cameras are used to observe them, the birds fail to show aggression. They play, give and take food from one another, and groom and interact with each other in a non-aggressive manner. Aggressive behavior is, however, seen in breeding Greys who have been companion birds. Companion Greys, domestic and imported, are taught to be aggressive by humans. Some reasons for aggression in companion Greys may be:

FEFFIE'S FEATHERS
CONGO AND TIMNEH AFRICAN GREY, SENEGALS, JARDINE’S PARROTS, RED BELLIED PARROTS, PIONUS, AND ECLECTUS BABIES.
Feffie's Feathers is a small, in-home aviary, located in Lansing, Michigan. When we decided to raise parrots, we promised ourselves that our parent birds would live as well as our pets and that we would maintain a pleasant living environment for our human family, as well. Although it took a fair amount of planning, re-arranging, redecorating and rewiring, we have been able to keep that promise.
Our parent birds are housed in an aviary with large, meticulously clean cages, full-spectrum lighting, natural foliage, lots of toys, and rainforest "music". Our babies are raised in a separate nursery, which has it's own kitchen facilities. We have cable television in the nursery. Between feedings, playtimes, and naps, our babies watch the History Channel, CNN, and the Arts and Entertainment Network. By the time they are weaned, most of our African Greys are ready for The High School Quiz Bowl. :-)
Our babies are fully and abundantly weaned to Scenic pellets, fresh sprouts, Goldenfeast mixes and carefully balanced mashes of fresh foods. They are tested for gender, Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, Pacheco's Disease and Psittacosis

We've participated in bird shows and have won a few ribbons for our beautiful birds. Hand-raised birds are very affectionate and easily handled by many people. GREESON'S BABY PARROTS
Updated:
September 05, 2005
Don and I have been breeding birds since 1980. As you can see, I have been a bird lover for a really long time. This picture was taken in 1953! We work hard to do things right and consider it a labor of love since we enjoy them so much. We started exhibiting at bird shows in 1984..took seven out of ten on the top bench, including Best in Show, at that first show, and don't you know we were hooked.
We took many years to accumulate our breeding stock, selecting only the very best of each species. As a result our babies are of excellent quality. We never breed two birds just to produce more.. the goal is always to improve on their beauty and confirmation. I serve the hobby as an American Cockatiel Society Panel Judge. We breed many species of exotics including African Greys, Conures, Pionus, Cockatoos, Macaws, Quakers, Ringnecks and Amazons. Please check out our baby birds for sale. .you may find we have just the bird you are looking for. This list is updated frequently.
Over the years I have published ten different booklets on birds.

However, I do know of many exceptions. These are often birds who are placed in new situations where they receive more stimulation and attention. Please do not misconstrue this to mean that if your grey does not talk, he is unhappy with you. Many of the non-talking greys I have met have been contented parrots. Another misconception I have heard is that parrots will not learn anything new after a certain age. This is absolute nonsense.
