Larry Swanson, LMP home
I live in Seattle, almost exactly halfway between the Fremont Drum School and John's Music , and have studied African and African-inspired drumming at both places. Baba Olatunji drew me into African music with his beautiful presence and rockin' music. I have studied West African djembe/dunun drumming with Mamady Keita and many other teachers, and I have dabbled with samba and Afro-Cuban music. I often play for Seattle dance classes, including One World Dance Positive Sweat Gania Loobey 's Guinea-style class, and Etienne Cakpo 's Beninese class. I have played dununs with Naby Camara's group Lagni Sussu and play for trance dance classes with Paul Wagner 's Sahlee.
Seattle often hosts African and other world music events

Its teaching and research focuses on interdisciplinary studies within an African and global context.
The Centre was constituted in 1976
and built on the work of the School of African Studies, which had been in existence for over fifty years and was one of the oldest in the world. Current scholarship takes place within the context of the mission of CAS , which is to promote scholarship in the various fields concerned with people in Africa. This brief remains focussed upon providing a critical comparative perspective between Southern Africa, Africa and the globalising world.
This mission remains urgent, given the long-standing and continuing dominance of Western models and discourses.

It also offers them meaningful after-school activities which help keep them off the streets, making them less vulnerable to involvement in gangs and drugs abuse.
Dance classes build cultural bridges, creating confidence and promoting our diverse cultures culture within the communities in which they are offered. The Dance for All project helps children from severely disadvantaged backgrounds to grow both culturally and intellectually, promoting a commitment to artistic creativity and fostering an appreciation for healthy living. Without this project, more children would spend their free time on the streets.
