By Jami Arceneaux/ Staff writer Published: Thursday, February 3, 2005
Traditional African dance troupe Muntu will accentuate the theme "Our Past, Your Future" at the African-American Heritage Celebration Banquet Saturday.
The Chicago-based theater group tries to "seek to appreciate the differences to amplify the similarities," said Lynn Stevenson, Muntu's company manager. The company is determined to educate all youth, regardless of race, by giving them a firm grasp of their culture. "We understand that there is merit in all cultures," she said.
The event is sponsored by Minority Affairs and University Board.

Story by Peggy Graham West African Dance Company Performs, Teaches Authentic, traditional West African Dance will be performed by 16 dancers, offering an electrifying display of choreography and polyrhythmic drumming from Senegal, Mali and Guinea. The energetic dance is compelling with gorgeously draped and robed performers. Every detail is attended to, even the rasping timbre of the beads that thrash on the women's dresses. KanKouran West African Dance Company was founded in 1983 by artistic director Assane Konte, and former director of music, Abdou Kounta, both from Senegal, West Africa. In 1992, Medoune ("Dame") Yacine Gueye, an outstanding drummer from Senegal, assumed the position of director of music. A non-profit organization, the company was founded for the purpose of contributing to the extension of the arts by introducing the essence of traditional African dancing and drumming to audiences in the U.S. Company members come from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean.

Bernard Woma, master xylophonist and drummer of the Ghana National Theatre performs West african xylophone music and dance.
http://www.dagaramusic.com/
In December 2000, Bernard Woma, head xylophonist and master drummer of the Ghana National Theatre, and his award winning ensemble, the Dagara Dance Troupe, performed ancient West African music and dance before a video production crew live, on location, in Ghana, West Africa. This performance of traditional West African xylophone music and dance, featuring one of the top musicians in Ghana and his best dancers, was recorded on location beneath the forested hills in the outskirts of Accra, capital city of Ghana. Dagara music is some of the oldest xylophone (balafon) and percussion music in the West Africa or the world, with complex rhythms that challenge listener and performer alike. The dancing is joyful, expressive and highly participatory. This live performance video is offered for sale as a means of sharing Dagara music and culture with the global community of music teachers, students, and enthusiasts. African music, African drumming, and African dance fans will enjoy the music and video within. View sample videoclips and a slideshow of stills from the video, and learn about Dagara music and culture, by clicking the links in the list to the left.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN
CONTRIBUTIONS to
THEATRICAL DANCE
Compiled from "Image of Perfection:
The Freestyle Dance of Matt Mattox"
by Bob Boross African dance has contributed the following
characteristics to dance in America:
1. a flat footed gliding action, dragging and shuffling the feet
2. movement performed in a crouch, with knees bent and body bent at the waist
3. movement that generally imitates animals
4. movement that exhibits improvisation, allowing for freedom of expression
5. movement that is centrifugal - exploding outward from the hips
6. movement that is performed to a propulsive rhythm to give a swinging quality The term "swinging quality" is important to understand and recognize as a defining characteristic of African rhythm. Whereas European music tends to accent the first and third beat of a bar of music, or accent all beats equally, African rhythms tend to accent the second and fourth beats. This gives the feeling of a rebound, or as if the second and fourth beats were an answer to the first and third beats. It is a bounce, like a bouncing ball, that rebounds and continually renews the energy of the beat. Dolores Kirton Cayou, in her book Modern Jazz Dance, agrees with the Stearns characteristics but also adds the quality of "polyrhythm in body movements". This is the practice of moving individual parts of the body in opposing and separate rhythms. It is a feat of coordination and complexity. It is another of the important movement qualities that Africans brought to America during the slave trade that are still visible in the jazz dances of the twentieth century.
