    Try African Dance
Sunday, April 3, 2005; Page M08 Can't stand another minute mindlessly jogging on the treadmill? Dog-tired of down dog? Whatever the reason, it's time for a new way to break a sweat without counting down every second until it's over. African dance, which mixes an intense workout with a strong cultural component, could be your salvation. Historically, the terpsichorean art commemorated celebrations marriages, baby-naming ceremonies and other festivals. The music is just as important as the movement: Most classes have live musicians on djembes (West African drums) and the occasional balafon, a xylophone-like instrument. While classes today preserve those African traditions by fostering a sense of kinship, it's also about working up a serious sweat. Once the drums start beating, you won't notice how hot it gets or how out of breath you are just how liberated and exhilarated it feels to dance, a part (for at least an hour) of a community moving and grooving together. What to Expect: Classes range from 60 to 90 minutes. After a warm-up, the instructor will demonstrate moves one by one, building on each until a routine comes together. Some classes follow each step the teacher makes; other classes culminate with "rounds" forming, as everyone takes turns in the center. Teachers usually give impromptu tutorials to dancers who look lost, but that's the best part don't worry about how you're doing, just keep it moving.

African dancing - an expression of life
Dance in Africa is not a separate art but forms part of everyday life. Unlike many dances of the west, African dance is not detached from the lives of the people.   It is a spontaneous release from the people and translates everyday life experiences into movement. Based upon the spoken language, African dance is a source of communication through which it is possible to demonstrate emotions, beliefs, everyday life activities and other reactions through movement. Love, hatred, joy, sorrow, courage, fear, and all other emotions are expressed through rhythmic movements. The people dance the sowing of the seed and the harvest, puberty rites, warfare, hunting, birth, death and life after death. There is the rain dance, dance of the sun, dance of strong intelligent offspring, courtship dance, marriage dance etc. Each country of Africa has many ethnic groups, each of which has a different language, history and tradition.  Music and dance reflect these identities.  Many traditional dances have a particular costume that enhances movement. African Dance has traditional roots, which implies that it is creative and not ‘written down’.  Traditional dances are developing all the time and this is particularly true of West African dance.  In recent years, West African dance has begun to be performed out of its original context e.g. In hotels, theatres and national ceremonies.  Performances bring together examples of dance from different regions across West Africa.
