Interviews, including those with dance historians Yacouba Konate and Alponse Tierou, add insight to beautifully-photographed performances. What emerges is a fascinating diversity of contemporary African dance themes and styles. Exploring the interactions between tradition and modernism, the consequences of colonization and urbanization, the self-expression of women through dance, and the roles of masculinity and family relationships, the film is a unique source of information and inspiration for dancers, dance historians, choreographers, critics, as well as those interested in African culture, past and present.

Paul Miller : Musician and administrative director In 1986, Zab Maboungou founded Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata and in 1987 she opened Studio Danse Nyata Nyata in Montreal. The company and its choreographer are available for performances, workshops and conference-discussions centered around African music and dance. The Studio has earned a well-respected place as a cultural centre within the Montreal dance scene. Its clientele, composed primarily of Montrealers, includes people from other parts of Canada and abroad. It was the only dance company invited to perform to an audience of 10,000 to mark Nelson Mandela's historic visit to Montreal in 1990. The studio publishes a yearly newsletter "Sango Ya Mabina" (Dance News). Zab Moboungou, of Franco-Congolese origin, is a pioneer of African Dance in Canada. She is the first professional African dancer to be awarded grants by the Canada Arts Council. She has been teaching "Rhythms And Movements" dance courses since 1981. She likes to remind students that an authentic technique in African dance cannot exist separately from the wealth of rhythms which inspire it (in this case, the rhythms of Congo and Central Africa). Zab stresses the importance of the specific rhythmic language which underlies her approach to movement. Over the years she has developed a unique teaching method she terms "the rhythmics of breath", which she elaborates in detail in her book

ISHANGI'S presentation is a wonderful blend of music, dance, and narration. In the course of a concert, the audience will learn about authentic African customs, history, musical instruments, masquerades, and legends. The program entertains, but educates as well.
The objectives of the program are to introduce the student to the culture, dance, music, and history of West Africa, dispelling common held myths. The program incorporates everyday activities such as how clothing is washed by hand, beating the cloth on rocks, and how history is told using an ancient instrument. All dance and musical presentations are thoroughly explained.
The program also addresses the problems of today's youth, such as drug abuse and suicide. Baba Ishangi creates a rapport with the audience imparting words of wisdom. The students are encouraged to be the very best that they can be, and never to give up because, "although the night is long, the day is sure to follow." Folktale hour with musical accompaniment, African dance/music workshops, and lecture/demonstrations concentrating on African history or culture are available. African artifacts such as carvings, masks, textiles, household utensils, work tools, and musical instruments are available for mini museum display.

Gumboot
The gumboot dance developed from traditional African roots, to become a part of urban South African working-class culture. The practice began with rural laborers who came to work at the gold mines of Witwatersrand in South Africa. They brought with them strong traditions of rhythm, song, and dance. Facing oppression and hardship at the mines, including punishment if they talked to each other while working, they were forced to adapt and create new forms of communication and entertainment. The fact that many ethnic groups and languages existed side by side also contributed to developing their associations through the shared language of rhythm and music. In the mines they worked for three months at a time, doing long, hard, repetitive toil. In the total darkness of the mines, many workers were chained to their workstations and forbidden to speak with one another. Hundreds of workers were killed every year in accidents and many were beaten and abused by the foremen. The conditions of the mines were deplorable, where mine floors often flooded due to poor drainage, causing skin problems and disease. Rather than spending money to properly drain the shafts, the bosses issued rubber gumboots to the workers. The miners' uniform thus consisted of jeans or overalls, bandannas to absorb their sweat, hard hats, and gumboots.

West African Dance
Africa covers about one fifth of the world's land area and about an eighth of its people. It is a land of striking contrasts and great natural wonders, from the tropical rain forests of western and central Africa, to the world's largest desert, the Sahara, to vast grasslands, and the world's longest river, the Nile. Africa is divided into 53 independent countries and protectorates. The African people belong to several population groups and have many cultural backgrounds of rich and varied ancestry. There are over 800 ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa, each with its own language, religion, and way of life. African dance embodies athleticism and a graceful beauty flowing with rhythm. In Africa, dance is a means of marking the experiences of life, encouraging abundant crops, and healing the sick soul and body. It is also done purely for enjoyment. All ceremonial African dances have a purpose. They tell stories and relate history. African music and dance in its essence communicates concepts of life on an elevated level; dance to the African is a universal, transcendent language. Traditionally, people throughout the continent of Africa achieve direct communication between themselves and their gods through ritual music and dance, including many with masks.

Dance Troupe Welcome to Utamaduni, Denmark.
Friendship and cultural exchange with Tanzania, Africa. The name "Utamaduni", a swahili word meaning "culture", was adopted by the dance troupe after a Danish cultural exchange with the Sukuma tribe in Tanzania in 1977. The exchange project in which the Danes also performed their traditional dance, was called "Daraja la Utamaduni" / "The cultural bridge". From that embryonic beginning of cultural exchange, rich and fertile images of African culture were absorbed by the "Danes" - all thanks to the Sukuma people. Since then Utamaduni has woven a tapestry of dance, drum, and song rhythms into a bond of friendship with local farmers and handicraft artists, and has inspired more than 25 Danish dance troupes that meet weekly for dance and workshops. Every year we arrange a gathering for people with interest in african culture, music and dance. We are 4-500 people who meet in the forest of Ramten Skov every year in week number 30, since 17 years now! The Utamaduni Dance Troupe brings alive Africa, right here on the spot, with its colorful and expressive performance.
