African dance is often accompanied by drums Indeed it can be said that the dance and drumming are so closely related as to be one. Africa is a large continent with 53 countries, and its dance, though always sharing some similarities, due to trade and migration vary greatly from the very Arabic North Africa, The what can be seen as the very roots with South and East Africa (where East African has more Arabic influence than the South and the very strong Arabic influenced Music and Dance of West Africa. In Africa people always sing, play instruments and of course dance. Their are many reasons to dance. WARRIOR DANCES are not unlike the Kata or Form used in Japanese and Chinese martial arts . They are a way of training in the technique used for wielding weapons and avoiding attacks whilst developing the muscles needed for these types of movements. It also serves the purposes of showing power and pride. Dances of Love can be very graceful as well being vigorous. They will often be danced on full moons, weddings and anniversaries. Yankadi and Macru are two dances that are very common all over west Africa,They are danced together one after another, Yankadi is slow and mellow with a lot of winding to the body, Macru is twice as fast as the Yankadi tempo it has a lot "hotter" movements to it. The Men and Women who are going to dance line up in rows facing each other, the girls have scarves and they put the scarf on the Men they want to dance with, the Men in turn puts the scarf on the Women he wants to dance with, Many marriages come about from this dance as people learn who likes who.

African Dance
Gambians love music. And whenever there's a party, they will dance. For official occasions like a wedding or a naming ceremony there are special programs, which all have their own dances. And every tribe has its own programs. At Gambian Griot we teach the dances of the tribes in our country, and we are experts on Mandinka dance. Our manager Dembo Jobarteh is a member of (Unesco's) International Dance Council.
A traditional Mandinka program consists of several parts. When the three drummers begin the sawruba, the women of the village form a big circle. The women will sing and if the music is good, they will dance. This part is especially for older women.
The madiba is a dance 'with power' for young people. On request the drummers may also play dimbatantango. The neighbours or age groups will organise this 'more than dancing' rhythm for women who have difficulty becoming pregnant. Another often requested dance is barawulo. This encourages the boys and girls to clean up the village. All these dances and many more you can learn at Gambian Griot. Naming ceremony If you are in The Gambia and get the chance you should attend a naming ceremony. It's a special occasion on which the name of a new born child is officially announced.

MUSIC DIRECTOR Sankofa is a symbolic, Ghanaian expression represented by a bird whose head turns back looking towards the past. The Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble retrieves the cultural essences of the past and brings them into the present. Sankofa presents dance and theater works expressing the dynamic presence of African culture in America. Some of the presentations are replicas of traditional African prototypes; and some of the works are re-creations, employing contemporary themes and movement motifs. The members of the African Dance and Drum Ensemble of SUNY Brockport represent the rich cultural heritage of Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Americas, and Africa that exists within our university community. The late Albert Opoku, the ensemble's first director, set the creative pace and artistic tone for the group of young artists who experienced and performed traditional Ghanaian dances. Authentic costumes, instruments and themes characterized the group at that time called Agoromma. An extensive variety of dances reached an audience hitherto unversed in the rich language of the West-African culture. This produced a generation of students infused with a newly found respect and inspiration for African dance. Upon retirement in 1985, Opoku returned to his homeland and Agoromma was transformed first into Kuam Ka Fafa and then into Sankofa under the guidance of its present artistic director, Clyde Alafiju Morgan. Khalid Abdul N'Fally Saleem joined the ensemble as music director in 1994 when he became a member of the SUNY Brockport faculty.

As Africa rapidly emerges into the modern world, its traditional dances are becoming increasingly influenced by western staging, choreographic and design ideas. Unlike most Africans who emmigrate to the United States today, Coulibaly was educated according to ancient tradition: rather than attend a school modeled on Western educational practices or based upon Qur'anic teachings, Coulibaly received his education from village elders, traditional rituals, initiations into secret societies, and master dance teachers in the Segu region of Mali. As a result of his studies, all of Coulibaly's work is thoroughly reserached and heavily steeped in folkloric tradition.

Using traditional dances from across Africa in a western theatrical context, the Company dances to live drumming. Traditional costumes, drumming and dancing combine to create exciting, energetic and enthusiastic performances. Narratives often link urban and culture clash themes with traditional African experience. This can add an emotional dimension to the performances, but sometimes seem over-simplistic. However, their recent work has seen the company on good form and for a colourful and different dance experience, Adzido is recommended.
